PERRY'S TURNS TO THE OPPRESSIVE HAND.... Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) had all kinds of interesting things to say about the federal government in the Spring. In the lead up to the right-wing Tea Parties, Perry complained bitterly about how "tired" he is of the federal government. "I believe the federal government has become oppressive," Perry said. "I believe it's become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of its citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state."

The governor added, "We think it's time to draw the line in the sand and tell Washington that no longer are we going to accept their oppressive hand in the state of Texas."

Funny, Perry isn't saying that anymore.

Earlier this year, Texas Governor Rick Perry was one of a handful of Republican governors who refused some federal stimulus funds from President Obama's economic recovery package on the grounds that there were too many strings attached to the money.

Now that the state is dire straits, however, Perry is asking the federal government for a loan to cover the very expenses the rejected stimulus money would have paid for.

Perry, probably thinking more about his upcoming Republican gubernatorial primary than effective government, made a very foolish call. In the Spring, he didn't want $555 million in stimulus funds that would have simply been a grant, which the state wouldn't have to pay back. Now, Perry may ask the federal government for a loan that could reach $650 million, which Texas will have to pay back.

When the governor announced his opposition to the stimulus money for unemployment benefits, he told Fox News, "[T]his was pretty simple for us." Apparently, it wasn't quite simple enough.

i love this story: you can't ask for a better example of how stupidity rules the republican party.

I guess Texas won't be seceding after all. They can't afford to.

Ugh!!!!!! Yes folks, that is my governor. What a goddamn idiot.

Further proof that the Republicans care far more about running for office than actually running an office once they're elected.

No, we will not loan you the money, but you can work it off by washing dishes.

Doesn't Texas rate worst in health care coverage throughout the nation, at 25% uninsured?

That's a heck of a statistic to be proud of, Mr. Perry.

Day after day we get stories about how stupidity rules the republican party. Can someone explain to me again why their frame still controls the public discussion?

Posted by: karen marie on July 17, 2009 at 10:55 AM | PERMALINK

Watch out. With their propensity for looking at everything through a Neville Chamberlain/ WWII lens expect Perry to claim that the "vicious" and "brutal" loan arrangements are *just like the indignities heaped on Germany after WWI*--ie some kind of forced and demeaning reparations-- and to demagogue the national government over it with the rubes.

karen marie, there's a simple answer to your question: stupidity rules the media, too.

Why have you forsake Texas, by taking this evil Federal money to help people who need it, Gov Perry?

I bet that salesmen love him.

Perry: "No, I will NOT buy the stereo at the sale price. I INSIST that I pay full price and the five year warranty as well. And no, I won't pay in cash, but I'll go with you "easy" 48 month payment plan with crippling balloon payment on the 48th month."

I wonder if there's been any public feedback in the Texas newspapers about Perry's position? What a dumb fuck he is.

We have too many politicians when we really need leaders- I hope all this seccessionist crap comes to chomp down on his arse like a bull shark.

Posted by: johnnymags on July 17, 2009 at 11:34 AM | PERMALINK

Ha, what Former Dan said!

I was thinking since the Fed is tightening the purse strings, Perry should turn to plastic. From somebody outside the Country of Texas, 30% sounds reasonable. Same goes for Kalifornia. Ahhnuld, your a putz.

This country wouldn't know how to vote for a leader if their pants were on fire. Electing the status quo is their God Given RIGHT.

in other words, when it comes to financial agreements, perry prefers the 'vanilla' to the the more confusing, complex type....all those strings, don't cha know?

bet he opposes the push to require consumer credit agreements to offer that option...

Years ago in California, Governor Gray Davis went to the Bush/Cheney adminstration to get relief from a power crisis we now know was manufactured and manipulated by Kenny Boy Lay and his Enron cronies. Cheney came out of his secret meeting with oil and electriciity industry executives (including Lay) just long enough to grunt no to Davis.

Within months the crisis forced Davis from office in a Repubublican spawned recall election.

I think the Obama/Biden adminstration should tell Goodhair Perry to go Cheney himself.

I wish that closet queen would tell the Feds to get out of the marriage biz as well.

Rick Perry is a dick.

That would certainly not be his first. Trust me, I live here, and he is such an idiot he makes Shrub look like a model of statemanship and intelligence. Perry is a thug in a cheap suit who only cares about one thing... Rick Perry. There are a lot of good people in this state but our government here is seriously screwed up.

I wonder what interest rate Perry got for Texas.

And what did he use for collateral? The Texas Longhorns?

If we don't kill em' with bad health care , we just kill em'

I don't think I would want to move there anytime soon.

One Who Knows,

You are absolutely correct. Maybe it's time to have another rally outside the governor's mansion with picketers holding their signs, "it's okay to be gay."

Yes, they covered this up mighty quick in 2004. Although, some prominent officials says they were aware of Ricky's "in the closet" behavior since the 1980s.

Isn't it amazing how they push their dirty little secrets under the carpet, but, when a democrat is suspected of something they holler to the top of the mountains!

Posted by: annjell on July 17, 2009 at 4:45 PM | PERMALINK

Instead of chastising Perry, we should applaud him.

1)He stuck to his Republican principles and refused the money.
2) He realized that he will need to money.
3) As a 'real' republican, he understands the importance of 'personal responsibility' which moved him to request help from the hated Federal Government and the willingness to pay interest on the loan as well. Now that is a rugged all-American boy for you.
4)Stupid, but all American none the less.

I think it is great that the Republican States end up paying interest on their loans. After all that is how the 'free' market works. Except no private enterprise would risk loaning money to Texas - or California for that matter. Unless of course it's a loan shark types deal at 30+%

In other words.... Here's another example of a Republican who wants to take advantage of the Federal Government's unlimited money supply.

I'm sure they will be able to spin it in a good light. No worries. The Kool-Aid is great.

Yes, we do. However, we are number one in pollution so suck on it, Treehuggers! We like it that way.

The Feds should refuse to loan Ricky the money and they should also refuse stimulus funds for Arizona where Kyl and McCain have been shooting off their mouths. Make the wingers live by the "principles" they espouse.

Posted by: Pug on July 17, 2009 at 9:21 PM | PERMALINK

It would feel sooo good to tell him to stuff it. But, we need the economy to go, so we should give him the money. Maybe we could attach a requirement that he publicly accept the money and apologize for refusing it before.
