THURSDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* Afghanistan: "In another sign of growing violence in the last two weeks before national elections, a group of civilians, mainly women and children traveling to a wedding party, were killed by a roadside bomb on Wednesday in the southern province of Helmand."

* Ten Democratic senators, including some genuine progressives like Feingold and Franken, wrote to the White House today, "saying that they will not support any domestic climate change bill that did not protect American industries from competition from countries that did not impose similar restraints on climate-altering gases."

* Former Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.) -- you know, the guy with cash in his freezer -- was found guilty yesterday by a federal jury on 11 counts of corruption. Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 30.

* Is the stimulus working as advertised? Council of Economic Advisers Chair Christina Romer makes a very compelling case that it is.

* The White House struck a deal a while back with the pharmaceutical industry -- the drug companies agree to support health care reform, and the administration agrees to seek no more than $80 billion in savings from the drug manufacturers. Now, the industry wants to make sure Democratic policymakers stick to the deal.

* A deal to extend "cash for clunkers" by $2 billion is "imminent."

* Support for U.S. policy in Afghanistan is slipping, and a CNN poll found that 41% favor the ongoing war.

* Why were those three American hikers arrested in Iran?

* Dear Max Baucus, please stop trying to convince Mike Enzi to support health care reform. Chuck Grassley, too. Sincerely, Steve.

* Much to the dismay of religious right groups, the American Psychological Association declared yesterday that gay people cannot become straight through therapy or other treatments.

* Glenn Beck's insane antics are causing some advertisers to walk away.

* There's just no reason for major media outlets to keep quoting John Bolton as an authoritative source.

* NPR's Mara Liasson backed off her comments yesterday comparing "cash for clunkers" to Hurricane Katrina.

* O'Reilly, just one day after getting slammed by Olbermann, is back to attacking G.E. What a coincidence.

* Fox News' Trace Gallagher interviewed Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) on "cash for clunkers" yesterday, and apparently she was doing a little too good a job responding to Republican talking points. He quickly ended the segment, saying he a "breaking news" story he had to report. The big story? "Shark Week" on the Discovery Channel.

* That obviously-fake Kenyan birth certificate was a prank that a few too many on the right fell for.

* Michelle Cottle with the Quote of the Day: "I have given up hope for a loyal opposition. I'd settle for a sane one." I have the same thought, just about every day.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

Not so quick to assume the Kenyan birth certificate is a forgery.

The Australian man needs to produce his original birth certificate so we can determine whether it's legitimate. There is still a question of whether it cooked up by hysterical lefties after Obama's Kenyan certificate was released.

The drug companies are supporting health care reform? Have I just missed those ads?

Former Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.) --
****************

Shouldn't that say "R-La". (I mean, by Faux Noise standards. Then later, you can change it without ever apologizing or even mentioning the "mistake".)

This is kinda scary to comment on, but, at this site
http://truckandbarter.com/mt/archives/2006/09/iraqi_dinar_dis_5.html

Accordingly, some scary, fraudulent stuff allegedly happening in Iraq.

I will say no more about this one, except, it's scary.

Based on some of the stuff in the site I posted above, that's why I continue to stand by my decision, the Bush Admin will never be prosecuted for War Crimes!!!

To be fair... Shark Week is pretty important...

Tom Coburn is trying to get the "Cash for Clunkers" program to give the clunkers to "poor people" so they can drive to the hospital in rural areas.

Talk about a total waste of money. If we didn't want to recycle the cars, we could just let folks trade in the cars and sell them to "poor people".

Posted by: tomj on August 6, 2009 at 6:46 PM | PERMALINK

Cash for Clunkers is JUST LIKE the Holocaust! Because, um, it's killing millions of people...or um...

Posted by: Conservatroll on August 6, 2009 at 7:04 PM | PERMALINK

@Go, Sestak

It's not that strange when you consider how much support those Senators get from organized labor groups. One of their big talking points is the difference American envrironmental laws and the utter lack of such protections (and their associated costs) in many foreign manufacturers (hi China).

Trace is just remembering to live every week like it's Shark Week... Except that he's focusing on the one particular week that actually is shark week

I don't see any problem with a scheme that applies tariffs to goods from countries that refuse to abide by environmental standards, or humans rights and labor standards, for that matter. Protection of domestic jobs is just a happy side-effect.

In re Olberman/GE vs. O'Reilly/FOX. It's gotta be a twofer for Olberman. What's GE going to do, fire him?

Much to the dismay of religious right groups, the American Psychological Association declared yesterday that gay people cannot become straight through therapy or other treatments.

Much to the dismay of gay activist groups, what neither the NYT article nor Benen mention is that the APA split the difference and "declared" that it is ethical for psychologists to help their gay clients reject their sexual attractions, as long as they make it clear to their clients that homosexuality is not a disorder and that there is no evidence that therapy can change one's orientation. In other words, it's akin to the official Catholic Church position that it is ok to be gay, just as long as you don't act on it.

Posted by: Disputo on August 6, 2009 at 7:42 PM | PERMALINK

Oh well,,, Ca$h 4 Klunkers.2.0 just got the go.

I wonder - what happens to the trade-ins?
Can I get a 1998 car that's been traded in under the program if I trade in my 1988 mother of enhanced CO2.
I'd need a decent trade in value to get by. it sure would be nice th have a car whose exhaust smelled better.

Regarding the State of South Australia birth certificate of David Bomford, that some say was the template for Obama's faked Kenyan BC: Is that seal the actual Seal for SA at the time? I've heard it isn't, anyone know?

"...as long as they make it clear to their clients that homosexuality is not a disorder and that there is no evidence that therapy can change one's orientation..." Disputo @ 7:42 PM.
Since this completely cuts the ground out from under claims by evangelical witch-hunters...I mean, 'doctors' that they CAN change one's orientation, I don't think it's as bad as you portray. At least any orientation-changing "practitioner" can now lose their accreditation, assuming they are accredited, that is.
One point I found very interesting in the write-up was that it mentioned suggesting to gay clients, who wish to remain active in a church, that they investigate other, more inclusive denominations. I would think that, unless the client was also suffering from a major case of masochism, many would seriously consider this.

IIRC, engines rendered inoperable. Other parts stripped for reuse as used parts. Pretty much what a junkyard does with the wrecks it buys, less the enging.

Meanwhile in the real world: I am going to a town hall meeting tonight, hope I don't get shot at by some brown shirt with a concealed Browning...

Wow, I guess people are really desperate to think the GOP has their interests at heart.

They think they are saved christian - yet, they are following the churches that believe in Rev. Sun Myung Moon - whom believes he's the Messiah.

Yes, people say Mr. Moon opening admits he's the Messiah, that he is better than Jesus.

It's been said, that when the anti-christ comes it will be either a charismatic minister or a politician, some of the less-known politicians allegedly following this guy, Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Alan Keyes, and Ralph Reed.

My Postcard to Hilzoy

Hey Hilzoy...

America is more fucked-up than ever. You actually have to see this shit to believe it. It almost defies being put on the back of a postcard, but I will try:

We've actually got dumb mobs who desperately need healthcare shouting it down at townhalls.
No I am not kidding...

But here is the funny part: These dumb mobs are motivated by the very healthcare insurance industry that will take away their trailers if they can't afford to pay for their meds.

The mobs lack of self-interest in this debate is stunning! Whoever said greed was the motivating force of all good never imagined this.

You almost expect some poor, fat, dumb, tattooed, southern fuck to pour gas over himself and light himself on fire rather than accept the public option! I've never seen such massive self-sacrifice for the greater good of healthcare insurance companies in my life. It's truly STUNNING.

How are things going in East Central Africa?

Posted by: koreyel on August 6, 2009 at 9:46 PM | PERMALINK

Koreyel, you are so right.

The same people out there protesting are dumber than I thought. They don't realize the people promising TAX-CUTS already have them.

That's why they always register businesses as non-profit and tax-exempt.

Hint: churches are big on prison ministries, half-way houses, senior-assisted living......

These organizations do not pay real estate taxes, income taxes, nor do they pay the sales taxes we pay when we shop!!!!!

Myke K - man I am laughing so hard, you are just to funny!!!

While I am not a fan of yours and I'm sure the feeling is mutual.

You remind me of a predator - you tend to get some of these people riled up and then laugh in their face. It's almost like you are having fun baiting them in, then you let in on them.

All I was doing was throwing in a few sites to enlighten some of the readers - not competing with you, just trying to give additional information.

All I can say is, Wow!!!

One point I found very interesting in the write-up was that it mentioned suggesting to gay clients, who wish to remain active in a church, that they investigate other, more inclusive denominations.

That's one way. Another "approved" way is to teach gays to be celibate. The WSJ had a good article on it today.

(Hint: if you encounter the WSJ subscription wall, search for the article headline on google, and click through from there.)

What? Christina Romer has data showing the stimulus is working? What on earth will Mike K say?

It's kind of funny in a sad way to see how the left resists any attempt to puncture the bubble they live in.

You might check out Christina Romer's study of tax increases she wrote in 2007. UC, Berkley has deleted it from the web site but the results, in brief, are that a 1% raise in taxes will result, after about 10 quarters to settle out for long term effects, in a 3% reduction in economic production. That is why Obama's program will result in a prolonged recession.

But damn, he was so young.

NPR's Mara Liasson backed off her comments yesterday comparing "cash for clunkers" to Hurricane Katrina.
===========================

Cool. I guess I'll have to say something like, "I don't think she's really as wicked as the Theresa Russell character in Black Widow; I only meant to imply she's cute ... not really a multiple murderer." I really regret saying that, and I didn't mean to suggest that she actually reminds everyone of Lizzie Borden, even if she does. Anyway, Borden was acquitted. No harm, no foul.

Everyone should be just fine with Mara. As long as she stays out of axe range.

Cupcake Steve, knew better. I've been saying this for 2 weeks. This country is at war with itself.

Posted by: Michael7843853 on August 7, 2009 at 12:50 AM | PERMALINK

Michael7843853, that and the fact that the GOP always tend to choose people on their weaknesses.

You'd think the seniors would have learned their lessons with the financial fraud they recently went through - and the medicare mishap. These seniors were confused on what medicare plan they should choose from, A-D, due to Boy George changing the medicare programs.

But, you also have to take in consideration, some of these same seniors are probably the ones that dropped out of school as a kid or teen to help take care of their families.

Either way, they are going to get screwed. There won't be too many that would be eligible to flee to Costa Rica- Costa Rica just raised the retirement income to either $1500-2000 a month - and you need proof.

This is a case of Elder Abuse at best!!!!

Some good news: a big Taliban leader, Mehsud, the one responsible for assassinating Benazir Bhutto, was apparently killed by one of our Predators.

Judy Woodruff also had a rough time trying to get a negative comment out of the head of the auto dealers group and a University of Michigan expert on the auto industry. She finally gave up when they kept insisting that this was a win-win for everyone! What's a journalist to do when there's only good news!

I'm just sayin'...
