HITTING BECK WHERE IT HURTS.... Apparently, GEICO has seen enough, and has become the fifth advertiser to drop its sponsorship of Glenn Beck's Fox News program. ColorOfChange, which began lobbying Beck sponsors after the media personality attacked President Obama as "a racist" who harbors a "deep-seated hatred for white people," issued this press release:
"On Tuesday, August 4, GEICO instructed its ad buying service to redistribute its inventory of rotational spots on FOX-TV to their other network programs, exclusive of the Glenn Beck program," said a spokesperson for GEICO Corporate Communications in an email to ColorOfChange.org. "As of August 4, GEICO no longer runs any paid advertising spots during Mr. Beck's program."
"We applaud GEICO and all of the other companies who have stepped forward to pull their ads from Glenn Beck," said James Rucker, executive director of ColorOfChange.org. "Beck's rhetoric is dangerous to the fabric of our democracy, and we are heartened that so many big companies feel the same way. We won't stop here -- we're going to continue our fight to see that as many of Beck's advertisers pull their support as possible."
While this lends itself to a variety of bad jokes, I'm partial to Tom Schaller's: "It was really so simple a decision, even a caveman insurance executive could make it."
On a more serious note, good for Geico. Especially in light of some of Beck's latest insanity, I can't imagine why any credible business would want anything to do with this clown.
Which segues into the next point. Media Matters released a new video today, noting that there are still some very high-profile companies -- Walmart, State Farm, Red Lobster, and Travelocity -- paying considerable sums to sponsor Beck's unhinged program. Which will be the next to follow Geico's lead?

Well, that's rewarding people who watch Glenn Beck by not having to watch Geico's horrible ads.

Wingnuts can scream all they want to about the First Amendment, which no one's taking away. No government entity is limiting what Beck can say. But the First Amendment does not require private companies to pay Beck to say it.

Those GEICO Caveman ads must have confused the average FoxNews viewer, considering they believe the Earth is only 6,000 years old.
Nice job, GEICO!

The ad buys get redistributed around the rest of the network, so GEICO is still funding the stupid.
Looking at the list from Stetson, I'm proud to say I have serious business with only two of them and occasional business with two more. I'll contact them about it.

Good on Geico. Beck's insanity is no joking matter and is blatantly obvious. He has demonstrated he is clinically insane and a psychotic...thinking it's somehow funny to pretend to be poisoning Nancy Pelosi as if this were justifiable because of political differences.
Stirring mobs to violence with his constant fear mongering. It's a dangerous game Fox allows Beck to play and what part of the nation that is not sick of Beck is that part of the nation that is Beck sick that he both cultivates and feeds on.
Sponsors cannot claim they are unaware of the sickness they sponsor any longer...and thanks to those who are pointing it out to them. These sponsors may think Beck has a following that will buy or use their services but they forget the overwhelming majority that will boycott them if they continue to support Beck. Did Beck poison the wine at Red Lobster or just the food?

What about the rights of companies to advertise wherever they want without fear of the SEIU showing up at corporate headquarters to bust executive heads?
Yeah, I didn't think you guys cared about those rights.

You know that, and I know that, but too many on the right depend on bad faith and bogus arguments.

What? Is your programming short-circuiting again? Because you just mashed a bunch of non-related talking points in an effort to make an argument.
Naturally: Companies don't have "the right to advertise". They have the discretion to, if they choose, if they can afford it. They also enjoy "the right" to put their money where they'd like, or take it away entirely.
Now, since I work with "companies" who advertise, I can tell you exactly ZERO people working there fear SEIU members, exactly NONE of whom would "bust heads", but many DO live by the almighty buck and respond nervously when money is involved.
If you don't like that, well, you're nothing but a commie bastard.

By the way, Mike K, if companies -- which, after all, has all the support of the coercive power of the State behind them, not to mention all the private security they feel like employing -- were really afriad of unions showing up to bust executive heads, there's a whole list of odious practices they'd be changing before they got around to yanking the corporate sponsorship of a fire-breathing nutjob like Beck.
Jackass.

As long as reasonable Americans don't boycott products of companies advertizing at Fox it will not go away. Beck is just the tip of the iceberg. Cut it off and there will be a new tip immediatly.
It's not Beck who needs to learn (Hah!) the power of the advertizers. It's Murdoch!

Geico would not have pulled their ad if they were in health insurance.
Who wouldn't want to advertise on Beck's show. If Beck can sell euthanization by the US Government, just think what a clever marketing team could sell those idiots.

I'd like to think that I do mostly progressive shopping. I haven't been to Wal-Mart for countless years, I stopped going to Target during the time when they were allowing pharmacists to dictate who gets what medicine based on their morals, and I have many more self imposed limitations, but look at the list of sponsors Stetson Kennedy posted above and tell me that boycotting them is a realistic approach, and that's just one show.

Drat you, Mike K parodist who uses the lowercase L instead of the Y in spoofing his name.
Posted by: Gregory on August 11, 2009 at 5:40 PM | PERMALINK
I disagree with those who say a boycott is unrealistic. Those companies can be avoided easily. I wasn't even aware of that list, and am not a progressive shopper, but easily do without all of them other than USPS. Better yet, reward change. I haven't eaten at Red Lobster in years, (for cost and diet reasons), but if they pull ads from Beck, I might go. And leave a note on a comment card telling them why.
Alternatives exist to most of those companies. Pearle Vision instead of Lenscrafters. Nabisco Cheese-Nips instead of Cheez-its.
You can't reason with the likes of Beck, but you might get better results dealing with the other end. Kick him in the balls.

Well then, since you already don't do any business with those companies, it should be easy for us all to boycott them. Nevermind that I've had my home, life, and auto insurance with State Farm for years and like my agent and service. Nevermind that Tylenol is the only pain medicine recommended for toddlers. Nevermind that Purina One is about the only cat food that provides a urinary tract formula and doesn't cause my cat to have recurring infections (and I might add was one of the few that remained melamine free in 2007), nevermind that my business uses Verizon Wireless for our cell phones, nevermind that I depend on the DHS to keep me safe, and the USPS to deliver my mail, and Exxon Mobil? You avoid them easily? Are you sure? You never use a single drop of oil refined by Exxon or any of the services of their hundreds of subsidiarys?
I agree with you regarding rewarding good behavior, but think that you're being obtuse to assume that your personal shopping habits and experiences are so universally applicable to everyone.
A boycott has to be massive to be effective, and, as I said before, it's completely unrealistic. I prefer to deal in reality, not politically charged fantasy.

He really believes he's reasonable. He really does.
Of course he does -- since he defines "reasonable" as "takes conservative myths on faith." QED.

Tim, the fact that you aren't a progressive shopper yet you are telling me how easy it is to avoid these companies is just plain stupid.
Being a progressive shopper involves more then not shopping at Beck advertisers. Should I waste two gallons of petro going to Lowe's instead of Home Depot ? Shall I drop my State Farm life insurance policy because they advertising with Beck and forget how well they have taken care of my burglary, multiple car wrecks, and damage from IKE ? Should I cancel my Direct TV, sell my iPhone, stop taking medications my doctor prescribes because they advertise on Beck's show ? Then next week when their competitors take their slots should I change my Bank Accounts, refinance my house with a different lender, and buy a different car because of Glen Beck ?
The fact of the matter is there isn't a major corporation without some dirt under their nails. You have to balance practicality with responsibility. I doubt I even own a piece of clothing or a shoe that isn't made at some quasi foreign sweat shop, but I don't have $400 for American shoes made by a craftsman making a real wage. The computer you use, most of the parts in the car you drive, the stores you visit, are made by people who are in real poverty. Organic fruit is slightly more expensive, but since they don't use pesticides they rely heavily on migrant workers, what do I do, ingest pesticides or support sub-standard wages ?
I do what I can and I really don't appreciate the sanctimonious non-sense from someone who doesn't even practice what he preaches.

Back to the article. It's nice people are pulling their ads, but does anyone think it's going to drive Beck from Fox, it might effect his contract minimally, but realistically he will still be singing his insanity and his customers will still be eating it up.
Posted by: ScottW on August 11, 2009 at 7:01 PM | PERMALINK
I called my State Farm agent this afternoon, and asked her to pass along my objection to Beck up her chain of command. She assured me she'd be happy to oblige. Anyone insured with State Farm should do the same. Your agent will be pleased as punch it has nothing to do with a claim, and all but the most arrogant would refuse so reasonable a request. You need only follow through to make sure they do, i.e., call back and request the name and phone number of the supervisor they claimed to have contacted. In fact, although I trust her, I intend to do just that in a couple of days.

Losing a sponsor is simply not punishment enough. Glenn Beck has gone way too far. His show may be entertainment rather than news, but Beck's vile rhetoric and wacky on crack behavior has crossed the line. For a self-described Mormon American, Beck has no sense of decency. Professionally, his lack of ethics is indefensible. To repeatedly compare the President to Hitler, to call Obama a racist, to act out poisoning the Speaker of the House, is disgusting. As Beck's employer seems more concerned about ratings than with truth, decency, and decorum and will not fire him, Beck should be banned from the airwaves by the FCC.

To do any good at all those ads for those companies listed in the post above need to be rotated off of the Fox News Channel altogether. Otherwise the money will find its way to Beck's pocket because he is part of the network.

A person chooses a place to worship which is closely aligned with their inner core beliefs. And then they hope to grow in knowledge of those beliefs by frequent attendance.
Jeremiah Wright is one of the most blatant racists ever. Anti-white, anti-American. Why did BHO stay for 20 years listening to such rants? Speaks volumes about his own beliefs.
