SANTORUM 2012? REALLY?.... There was a fair amount of talk in, say, 2005, that Sen. Rick Santorum (R) was eyeing the 2008 presidential race. It was hard to take the scuttlebutt seriously, but Santorum was quietly making some behind-the-scenes moves in that direction.
The talk came to an abrupt halt when Santorum, whose most notable Senate achievement was an interview in which he compared gay couples to "man-on-dog" relations, lost his re-election bid by a humiliating 18 points. The idea of Santorum having national ambitions was obviously silly.
And yet, here we are.
Add former Sen. Rick Santorum to the list of potential 2012 Republican presidential candidates.
POLITICO has learned Santorum will visit first-in-the-nation Iowa this fall for a series of appearances before the sort of conservative activists who dominate the state GOP's key presidential caucuses.
The Pennsylvanian, who lost his 2006 reelection bid, will visit Iowa on October 1, appearing on a Des Moines radio talk show and speaking to a luncheon and workshop of Iowa's Right to Life group before heading east to Dubuque, where he'll headline a fundraiser for the conservative America's Future Fund PAC and then speak about the future of the GOP to a public audience in the Mississippi River city.
Now, a politician -- current or former -- showing up for some face-time in Iowa isn't necessarily evidence of presidential ambitions. That said, Santorum acknowledged his interest in taking on a leadership role in Republican politics.
"I'm very concerned about the state of affairs in this country and how Republicans are dealing with [issues], so this is an opportunity for me to go out and talk about things I think we need to be doing to turn this country in the right direction," Santorum said of his Iowa plans.
He's also apparently spent some time considering how he'd fare in the Hawkeye State's 2012 contest. "One of the things we've seen from the Iowa caucuses is candidates that appeal to the base do very well," Santorum said when asked how his conservative profile would fit the state. "I think historically that's always been sort of a key in Iowa. Whether I do or not, I don't know -- I mean, we'll see."
I don't doubt he would appeal to a certain segment of the Republican base. After all, Santorum has said publicly he wants White House efforts to improve the country to fail, and Glenn Beck has compared the far-right former senator to Winston Churchill.
Whether Santorum can appeal to a mainstream national audience seems a lot less plausible.

Rick Santorum, Haley Barbour, Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin.... 2012 promises to be quite the show
What the GOP really needs to do is put forward someone calm, analytical, and re-assuring. basically out-Obama Obama. Instead they offer a clown car of crazies

Oh please let this be so, we need to add more nuts to the GOP 2012 freakshow.
Don't know if he can win in Iowa(didn't Obama win it last year vs. McCain?), but Santorum couldn't even win re-election in Pennsylvania. Thank God.

I saw Santorum in a Leesburg Virginia Target store a few weeks after he left office. He was utterly anonymous and completely ignore by the hordes of suburbanites. Hopefully he'll stay that way, as he is a dangerously unhinged wannabe theocrat.

The 2012 GOP primary season promises to showcase more mixed nuts than a can of Planters.

The problem is that the GOP has gotten so conservative and is acting so crazily that they don't really have too many credible candidates left in the party. Since there is no clear front-runner, everybody and anybody thinks they've got a shot (and they probably do).

Santorum needs to show his long form birth certificate. Otherwise how will we know that both his parents are human? I don't think half dogs are eligible to be President.

After suffering from six long Santorum Years here in Pennsylvania, I'm surprised that he has forgotten how badly he was defeated for re-election. Short Memory Syndrome, coupled with the quadrennial Iowa Virus?
I wonder if he secretly won the Powerball- during his brief tenure as PA's resident crazy his mommy and daddy supplimented his senatorial salary.
Ricky said:" "One of the things we've seen from the Iowa caucuses is candidates that appeal to the base do very well,"
Yeah, uh-huh. He's got some serious work ahead of him, trying to out-crazy Sister Sarah. . .

Being a former presidential candidate is better than being a former senator.

I wouldn't scoff at Jeb Bush running. The Right is so dysfunctional now that at some point in the next couple years another Bush -- and arguably one that doesn't score as high on the stupid sounding meter as Dubya -- could very well energize the...whatever they are.
In fact, that may be the only card they can play.

Is Santorum a good hater? The GOP, ceteris paribus, will nominate the best hater.

He's a total weirdo.

Please, please, please, let it be Santorum/Palin in '12. Or, better yet, Santorum/Bachman. In either case, is there a building which could contain the crazy?

That was also an insult to clowns that ride in cars and the circuses that they ride in.
Pure entertainment doesn't try to lead by example. It's entertaining not inspiring; it might be eye catching and loud but it's merely ephemeral and certainly not thought provoking.

One more favorite Santorum moment:
On June 14, 2005, Dick Durbin said,
"If I read this [a list of abuses at Guantanamo prison] ... and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime--Pol Pot or others."
Rick Santorum threw a giant hissy fit over Durbin's statement. He was Outraged! Outraged! Outraged and demanded an apology from Mr. Durbin.
The outright audacity of him to compare our treatment of prisoners to Nazis was the height of irresponsibility!
Odd thing is that Santorum publicly apologized for his remarks comparing the Democrats use of the filibuster to oppose judicial nominees to "the equivalent of Adolf Hitler in 1942."... this happened one month before Santorum jumped allover Durbin.
Yep, that Santorum is a real clown.

Long-shot candidates can't be counted out. Reagan was a long shot until inflation and Iran knocked out Carter. But hopefully Santorum's negatives are too well known and it's hard to find any real positives with appeal outside the party base (no other politician has had anything approaching Reagan's TV personality).
But will another Reagan come along?
Posted by: skeptonomist on August 12, 2009 at 3:27 PM | PERMALINK
Santorum is no Reagan.
Please, let it be true. I'd love for Santorum to get in the mix, it would make good theater for the next election.
Santorum, Palin, Gingrich, and the other contemporary GOP nutbars are the answer to Voltaire's famous (and only) prayer: "O Lord, make my enemies ridiculous."

Recall that Iowa now has marriage equality thanks to a remarkably enlightened state constitution and a courageous state supreme court. Recall also that the most recent caucus winner was Huckabee. If Saint Rick has any chance at all he must think that Iowa is a pretty good place to start.

Hey, don't forget Gov Goodhair when you're listing crazies. A GOP ticket of the two Ricks would be a festival of madness.

Also Thames Water is currently digging up pipes that should have been replaced years ago when it was a publicly owned utility. But as they under invested in them, we now have lots of them being replaced at once.
