HATCH GETS A SECOND BITE AT THE APPLE.... Last week, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) appeared on ABC's "This Week," and raised a number of arguments that proved Hatch doesn't understand health care reform. He argued, for example, that reform would force "up to 119 million people into Medicaid," which isn't even remotely accurate. He added that members of an Independent Medicare Advisory Council will determine "what kind of health care you're going to have," which is just crazy.

Seven days later, "Meet the Press" decided to reward Hatch for his performance by having him address health care again. This time, he argued that the Congressional Budget Office concluded that "tens of millions of people" would lose their private insurance, go with the public option, and "destroy the private health industry."

David Gregory, to his credit, had his facts straight and intervened. "Well, wait a minute, Senator Hatch, that's not right. The Congressional Budget Office did not say that.... The CBO said that, in fact, those enrolled in private insurance plans would go up by three million, and they estimate that about 10 million people, only 10 million people go into a public plan. 'Tens of millions,' that's different than 10 million."

Hatch, undeterred by reality, responded, "Well, that's plenty. Others are saying up to 119 million people."

The "119 million" number is the same bogus claim Hatch repeated last week, which is still completely wrong.

And that's what brings me back to the thought I always have when I see interviews like these. Hatch appeared on "This Week" and made claims about health care reform that weren't true. Seven days later, he appeared on "Meet the Press" and made claims about health care reform that weren't true, some of which were debunked on the air during last week's appearance.

Will Hatch's misstatements of fact discourage producers from booking him again in the future? Of course not; that isn't how the game is played. It's why Hatch doesn't feel the need to tell the truth -- the falsehoods serve his agenda, and he'll get invited back onto the air whether he's honest or not.

This is like the children’s game of Whack-A-Mole!

Someone makes up another lie about The Chosen One.
Drudge & Fox News make it their headlines.
Republicans repeat it.
Dumbocrats say it is a lie.
Our corporately owned media provide platforms for repeating the lies.
Our corporately owned media perform their ‘He said - He said’ discussions.

Rinse-Repeat-Rinse-Repeat

We win - you lose…

Our base will believe the lies.
The vast muddle of the American sheeple will be confused.
Distrust of government increases.

What more could a country dominated by the wealthy and corporate interests want?

We win - you lose…

Of course we lie.
We know that we lie.
There is no penalty for lying.
We will continue to lie.

We win - you lose…

I think we all need to email the Sunday mornings hosts and say, "Hey, do you think you can have someone on that can get his facts straight on this issue? All you're doing is confusing people."

The shows wouldn't exist if there wasn't an audience. Just quit watching them. When you report on them, I think "Really? He said that? I better watch next week and see what lies they'll cook up next!" You're helping to perpetuate the lies.
Skip the Sunday Morning shows, and quit watching cable news. It just makes you mad anyway. Stick to the facts, Benin. It's what you're good at.

There seems to be no punishment for lying for these guys. In fact, if health care reform gets watered down a lot, it's actually rewarding it.

There's a trend here amongst the commenter. Hatch isn't mistaken or in error. He's LYING.

It is all the liberals fault. They supported the teachers' unions who never taught their students to think critically or objectively. Instead, the teachers and their students are victims of a consumer society with its planned obsolesce, and the conditioning to react to advertising propaganda. And, the most cycle of planned obsolesce is, of course, the "educational reforms." Slogans and lies work.

At the very least, the moderators of these shows need to rebut any and all false statements forcefully and repeatedly, and *not* let liars have the last word.

It's an acknowledged fact in soccer that a mediocre defense can thwart a good offense -- it's harder to score than it is to defend.

But good teams like Brazil always find ways to score -- by spreading the defense, opening up the lanes and sending through balls in the gaps or over the top, repeatedly, precisely and elegantly. That's how they beat the US after spotting us two goals in Johannesburg.

Democrats can learn a lot from watching Ronaldihno and KaKa.

This is small stuff. Next week John McCain weighs in on the yet to be started rumors that Hillary Clinton was with Jimmy Hoffa the night he died. Charles Krauthammer would have already broke the story but Karl Rove swore him to secrecy. Bill Kristol has the pictures. George Will has a column ready denying any effect on global warming due to Hillary's murder of Hoffa.

Meanwhile, it seems that Joe Lieberman is jockeying for attention from the Sunday talk shows. He wants to do his worst, too.

Independent Medicare Advisory Council will determine "what kind of health care you're going to have,"

What WOULD determine it, then?

I suspect he has it exactly right.

What we fail to point out is that private insurers do this already through fine print and footnotes in policy underwriting.

Obama has done pretty well in not just denying lies but explaining the truth. This one talking point has lived on without being properly addressed.

It is the rationing argument in a different cloak. The status quo ALSO dictates what care you're going to have. For 40 million people the answer is "the least legally permissable" or "none".

Yes, and after he got done lying, one more time, Hatch then went to his Mormon Church and prayed to God ........ never mind that Jesus taught that one of the greatest sins was in fact lying and bearing false witness ....

Posted by: stormskies on August 24, 2009 at 9:58 AM | PERMALINK

Hatch, undeterred by reality, responded, "Well, that's plenty. Others are saying up to 119 million people."

Doesn't anyone ever do the math on these claims? If you had one person determining what kind of health care you are going to get it would take 226 years if they approved/denied one person per minute, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. A panel of 5 would still take 45 years. The same logic could be used in the "death panel" lie. Any sane person could see that this doesn't make any sense.

... oh wait, I forgot who I was talking about. Never mind

This highlights the dilema of the media environment. Does a report like this in this blog (and others) serve to highlight the lies, or does it merely perpetuate the lies by making more people aware of the original broadcast?

The problem seems to be a mismatch of scale. The old MSM still has the advantage of a more focused megaphone, while the 'tubes is still a diverse and scattered collection of voices who reflect diversity, not concensus. The MSM still has power.

That said, I think it's best on balance to publish these reports. Over time, and with a sufficient targeted response, the errors will get corrected.

Now I'm off to send a criticism to MTP. Anyone got a direct email link?

Here we are again saying, "people who say that the public option will destroy private insurance companies are just using scare tactics!" The fact is that most liberals would view this as the most ideal outcome of a public option plan. But we are too scared to stand up for our principles, so we play this idiotic game. Rep. Anthony Weiner is one exception, in that he has at least implied that getting rid of private insurance would actually be beneficial to the nation.

The wrong wing likes to claim that Islam says it is ok to lie to infidels. I wonder if we can say the same thing about Mormons. Do they claim it's ok to lie to nonMormons? If not, how does Hatch justify what he is saying?

Posted by: Texas Aggie on August 24, 2009 at 12:54 PM | PERMALINK

"Others say" and "some have said" are always my favorites.

After all, it's true that "some have said" we need to exile blacks and kill Jews. So why not quote that, Senator Hatch? It's no less ridiculous and just a bit more offensive than the drivel you spew.

I'm an "other" and I say that if ObamaCare passes, there will be lemonade flowing from every drinking fountain and money growing on trees.

No worries about how to pay, we'll just pick that money off those trees and use THAT to pay.

Now will those "facts" make their way into Hatch's headhatch?
