'IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED' BY WHOM?.... The Republican National Committee has sent out a "2009 Future of American Health Survey." Question #4 reads:
"It has been suggested that the government could use voter registration to determine a person's political affiliation, prompting fears that GOP voters might be discriminated against for medical treatment in a Democrat-imposed health care rationing system. Does this possibility concern you?"
Two quick thoughts. First, this is hopelessly insane.
Second, I was foolish enough to believe the RNC was incapable of surprising me. Live and learn.

Conservatives get scared easily. RNC is just following what has worked so far. Scare them and they will have a tea party.

It has been suggested that this is precisely what republicans would do should they gain control of a democratically imposed "health care rationing system."

I feel confident that any 'Democrat-imposed health care rationing system' would provide a full range of mental health treatment for all batshit crazy Republicans, regardless of the immense strain it would obviously impose on the national economy.

The passive voice can be used to raise any piece of crap and still not look like an idiot. A commonly used trick.

Hell, yeah!
Every Republican gets lined up in front of the death panels, first thing!

So THAT explains why Republicans senior citizens don't currently get monthly Social Security checks and medical care under Medicare. I knew there had to be a reason, but I could never figure it out. Thank you RNC!

why is it that the republicans always project their own boogey men onto democratic ideas? sane people would never think to exclude based on political identification but wingnuttia residents would. so far, rove has blamed all of the bush white house actions on obama and dems, as if no one remembers the truth.

I am never surprised at just how tribal America has become. I have been told point blank by frightened Fox News/Rush Limbaugh loving Republicans that Barack Obama personally wants them to face "death panels." The Republican base is so far out on the fringe that even long time libertarians cringe. You would think we were talking about some batshit insane Serbian ethnic groups with centuries of barely concealed fear and loathing of their neighbors.

Touche. In fact, I would go further and say that most Democrats would probably willingly pay higher tax rates to enable that mental health care. It's the patriotic thing to do.

"I was foolish enough to believe the RNC was incapable of surprising me."
Steve Benen should acknowledge that he is continuously surprised by the RNC, Republican Congressmen, Republican Senators, and radio talk show hosts. The truth will always surprise such dullards.
What is there not to believe that republican supporters will be singled out by ObamaCare's death panels?
We will not be surprised if Obama uses zip codes to identify residents of republican voting areas for mass deportations to the FEMA re-education camps run by Acorn.
I am still awaiting a credible response to the definitive proof offered by the honorable Congressman Dan Burton that Vince Foster was murdered by Hillary Clinton with a lesbian bullet!

Sadly, Republicans are projecting again. Many of them are capable of anything, so they assume that others are as despicable as they are.
Posted by: Chris on August 27, 2009 at 12:58 PM | PERMALINK
May I suggest this is some reverse projection? That they'd love for insurance companies to use even MORE muscle - say threatening to cut off benefits to politically active people or changing benefits to coerce people?
Seems to me they'd love this idea if the insurance companies tried it.

Still being registered Republican, I get a "survey" about every other week. Nearly all of the questions are worded like the one referenced above. They are quite entertaining. I write comments in the margins and send them back but if there is no check enclosed I doubt they even read these things.

No, but you've given me an idea. Would serving them doctored brownies calm them down a little and maybe even get them to smile? Or would they just whine all day about their cottonmouth?

Total fucking morons. The GOP is a freak fest for the easily brainwashed, and their corporate puppet masters who stay rich as long as they can keep the masses scared.

Tracking people according to their political donations and party affiliations, and denying them benefits if they vote for the wrong party? Harassing and firing federal employees because of their party affiliation? Screwing individuals and companies that donated money to the wrong party (or the wrong GOP candidate), or that didn't donate enough? Violating the Hatch Act on a massive scale?
These are the things that the REPUBLICANS did when they controlled the federal government. They deliberately re-introduced Tammany Hall style spoils-system politics during the years that they controlled Congress ... and it got truly toxic when they controlled the Executive Branch as well.
Not only were ordinary government functions like contracting and regulation run on a spoils system, but it even extended to basic consitutent services. The staff of GOP senators and representatives would regularly sneer at constituents who called in with the "wrong" views - or simply hang up the phone. If you weren't loyal to the party, you got nothing. You were under occupation. Your views didn't matter. Elections have consequences, right?
So ... claiming that health care will be dolled out on a spoils system basis? Gosh ... project much, guys?
I think it this fantasy is very telling about how the modern GOP sees government action - as a way to punish enemies, and reward friends, rather than actually accomplish a nonpartisan social goal.

Trust me spend two minutes reading the following will explain why not only are death panels and rationing by party possible but actually inevitable once you take that first step down:
The Road to Serfdom, In Cartoons. (18 b&w panels)

This tactic is straight out of the Fox News playbook, and featured in the documentary "Outfoxed". In it they show how Fox News personalities repeatedly say "People say..." when in fact the only "people" saying such a thing are *Fox News personalities*. It's crap. Similar to me saying "It has been suggested that Rush Limbaugh is a bipolar pedophile who eats kittens and uses his own waste as a conditioning shampoo."

It's as if all of the members of the GOP have big empty heads and all their leaders have to do is suggest crazy things for them to believe them. The most interesting part is that the GOP doesn't seem to think that they can take this all too far, that at some point they'll push something so nuts that they'll become a joke to the vast majority of the public.
Granted I would have thought it would have happened with the government-wants-to-kill-your-granny meme, but it's possible that they'll say something so stupid and silly that it'll become unintentionally funny. Where is Tina Fey these days??!?

This is the break the Dems have been looking for. What an easy and elegant way to make sure the health care bill is revenue neutral. Since conservatives don't want government run health care, excluding them from coverage under the final bill is a win win. They can stick to their principles and the government doesn't have to be responsible to cover costs for some of the physically and mentally sickest in the nation.

Reposting; I put this on the wrong thread:
As my wife just pointed out, they've now laid the groundwork for millions of undereducated Republicans to wake up the day after a reconciliation bill is signed and run out to re-register.
Which may *sound* like a windfall for Democrats, but will wrench the results of Democratic primaries so far to the right that all our heads will spin for the next decade.
