QUOTE OF THE DAY.... The good news is, nearly four-dozen advertisers have now pulled their sponsorship of Glenn Beck's deranged Fox News program. The bad news is, Beck's ratings have gone up, in part because he's acting like an even bigger lunatic than usual, and clowns doing funny dances tend to draw a crowd.

Yesterday was especially astounding. He argued on the air, for example, that President Obama intends to create a "civilian national security force," which will be similar to Hitler's SS and Saddam Hussein. Apparently, this has something to do with AmeriCorps, which Beck initially said has a $500 billion budget. (He corrected himself later in the show, though his guest didn't blink when he originally made the claim.)

Towards the end of the show, after scrawling on a variety of boards and pieces of paper, Beck summarized his key observation. On a chalkboard, Beck had written the words, "Obama," "Left Internationalist," "Graft," "ACORN Style Organizations," "Revolution," and "Hidden Agenda." If you circle some of the first letters of these important words, Beck says, it spells "OLIGARH." Beck told his viewers there's only one letter missing. If you're thinking that letter is "c," you're not medicated enough to understand Beck's show.

The missing letter is "y," because the word he hoped to spell is "OLIGARHY." No, that word doesn't exist in the English language, but that's probably because the dictionary was written by some communist community organizer who wants to keep Glenn Beck and his viewers down.

The quote of the day, however, came towards the end: "I'm tired of being a sheep. I'm tired of being a victim. I'm tired of being pushed around. You know what? The gloves come off."

Glenn Beck is a "victim"? Why is it that disturbed right-wing nuts always feel sorry for themselves? Beck is very well paid to say crazy things on television.

What's more, his minions take his insane tirades seriously. Whatever Beck says on Monday gets repeated by unhinged crazies on Wednesday.

Beck is getting worse. I can't help but worry that it's only a matter of time before he hurts someone.

"C" is for "Communist." Doesn't he know anything?

At what point do they 'jump the shark'? Maybe we'll need a new euphemism. Maybe "Gone Beck". Or, "What a mother Becker".

Posted by: buckyblue on August 28, 2009 at 3:23 PM | PERMALINK

Or he'll be like Howard Beale and get plugged on live television to boost the ratings.

Part of me really wants to watch this now, and it's the same part of me that slows down to see if anyone is injured in a car crash.

"OLIGARH" plus a 'C' plus an 'E' and another 'A' spells "RAGEAHOLIC" - this means something!

Obviously, he meant to circle both the A and the C in ACORN. Then it works!

How could we all have missed this? Thank God for Glenn Beck!

What is really fucking scary is all the 'minions' that tune into and watch this insane clown because of their own need to have their totally delusive reality, a reality built on nothing but delusions, reinforced by this clown. That's what is fucking scary ...........

I have yet to be able to watch even one segment of Glenn Beck - the stills are quite enough. He is quite the unhinged lunatic from his quotes, and I doubt we have much to worry about until he is ultimately canceled. Then his "poor me, the victim" mentality may kick into high(er) gear and he'll attack some toddler at a Kmart, be whisked away to court, and then sent to...now where do "celebrities" go when they're in trouble? Oh yeah - REHAB. Can't we just start a Rehab For Beck website now and just cut to the chase?

Why do liberals always assume they own the English language. We aren't like France where spelling and language are regulated by an Academie. We can choose our own spelling by consensus.

I think Beck's ratings are up because he's throwing red meat to the people who watch him anyway. His ratings are high in the demographic that watches conservative TV, but what percentage is that of media consumption in general? (radio, other TV, internet, twitter, etc.)What are the demographics of his audience in terms of income, age, education level, etc. Advertisers lose nothing by pulling their ads if his audience is unemployed, uneducated, and uninformed. These are the people with the least amount of purchasing power. Sadly, they are also the ones most negatively impacted by policies Beck supports. He is not an newscaster, he is an entertainer selling snake oil to those who will buy.

Since conservatives always attack that which they themselves are most guilty of, Beck's sudden hostility to "oligarchy" ought to be clue us in tat the conservative sponsors of FOX feel vulnerable to charges that they are turning America into an oligarchy. Just like the conservatives who commissioned Jonah Goldberg to write a book called Liberal Fascism.

The best thing about the post-Bush era, is there is absolutely nothing they can threaten us with that they wouldn't have done already the second it srang to their minds, and they aren't in a position to do everything that springs to their puny little minds, any more.

The gloves have been off and they've been using brass knuckles, and they give us their worst every minute of every hour of every day, and you know what? It ain't that bad.

And I think he's pretty funny.

I wonder if his fans know that he's laughing at them behind their backs? Same with Limbaugh. I'm constantly amazed that they don't even try to present themselves as believable or genuine. It's like performance art...or just plain old vaudeville. It's a racket and Beck is fleecing the faithful. I don't see the point in hand-wring over anything these clowns do or say, because that's what they are: highly paid clowns.

Can you imagine the creative brainstorming sessions behind the Beck and Limbaugh shows? They probably use ex writers from the WWE.

You people need to get real. How many people on here are talking shit but have never seen Beck's show? You sheep are all wrong. The comment about Obama wanting a new national police force that's just as well funded and just as well trained as the U.S. military, was a direct quote from a speech he gave while campaigning. Beck was simply asking the obvious question. Who is this new army targeting? No politician is concerned with our open borders. So it must not be invasion he's afraid of. Besides we have the National Guard for that. So why do we need an unconstitutional army accountable to barack obama? If any of you dumb fucks can answer me I would appreciate it.

You see? I have yet to here an answer to any of the questions Beck has proposed. Assholes like you guys just attack him, since you can't answer reasonable questions.

Yes, Beck took a statement from Obama relating to how things beside military force can protect our national security and decided that one comment revealed a secret agenda that's so hidden, Obama has not only never referenced it in any other fashion, he's never made any move to enact it since he's take power. It is only the AWESOME POWER of Beck's perception that has allowed him to see what others cannot.

Posted by: MBunge on August 28, 2009 at 4:21 PM | PERMALINK

Dave,
Beck is either opposing the expansion of Americorps or the additional members Obama has requested for the State Dept. who will be used for diplomatic purposes. Beck knows this but uses it to convince those who will listen to him that Obama is designing some sort of civilian militia to overthrow the government. The question you should be asking yourself is, why would Congress for the first time in American history allow the POTUS to do something that is unconstitutional? Also you need to remember that NO new legislation crosses the president's desk UNLESS it makes it through both houses of Congress.
Beck would probably call the Civilian Conservation Corps (1933-1942) a conspiracy to take over the government if it were created under this administration.

The radical background of President Obama's "Czars" is a valid news story and no one but
Beck is reporting on this story. That is why Beck is so popular. If the Washington Monthly is so concerned about news about the radical background of President Obama's Czars getting out to the public, you could counter it by reporting on the same story with a different spin. For example, what is the real role and influence of President Obama's Czars and does Congress have any oversight when it comes to their power over policy decisions? Chances are the Washington Monthly won't be reporting on the real story about the power of President Obama's Czars and instead concentrate on attacking Beck for the very reason that what Beck is reporting on is all true.

So the "gloves come off" for another multi-millionaire. Does this mean he's gonna start giving his money away now to those downtrodden he claims to speak for.

The man is clinically insane and if Fox is not responsible enough to remove him from the public air waves then we must. He is rabble rousing mis informed sick and angry individuals and inciting them to violence...it's time this ends. It is self destructive to a functioning democracy. Being divisive and seditious it should no longer be tolerated on the public airwaves and should be called out for being misinformation propaganda.

I'd be willing to bet that no one here hasn't at least seen clips of Beck's show. The man is a stark raving lunatic, and you have to be pretty far around the bend yourself not to see it.

At least when Limbaugh says moronic things (ie, all the time), there's at least a grain of truth that he distorts and lies about. But Beck is deep-end city. Hell, he doesn't even know the difference between socialism, communism, fascism, and Nazism - not that that stops him from ranting on about it, or from gullible uneducated chumps like you from believing it.

Posted by: DH Walker on August 28, 2009 at 4:49 PM | PERMALINK

Beck should review the movie "Network" and contemplate the fate of Howard Beal.

Posted by: Kurt on August 28, 2009 at 4:49 PM | PERMALINK

The word "czar" is a media fabrication which means exactly nothing. It originally was applied to people who were appointed to coordinate various segments of the bureaucracy in relation to a particular issue of set of issues (drugs, energy). Now the label seems to be stuck on to anybody recruited for a specific task, without regard to any coordination function. Naturally there are more "czars" than before because the use of the word has broadened.

Also, the word implies some kind of autocratic power when nothing could be further from the truth. Most people in "czar"-like jobs have become very frustrated in their inability to move the bureaucracy.

Of course the right latches onto any buzz word they can milk for fear power.

Posted by: DonkeyKong on August 28, 2009 at 4:57 PM | PERMALINK

Right here before our very own eyes is evidence of why Beck is popular. Dave, Larry and Henry, despite any evidence other than what Beck says, believe things that simply aren't true. There are no death panels, there is no new national police force, there is no Czar cabal. These things are lies. Any reasonable person can ascertain the truth of these things in a matter of minutes. But, Dave, Larry and Henry strongly believe them, and I suspect will continue to believe them, as will their friends, no matter what. Facts don't matter to them. They just agree with Beck. It's easier than figuring out what's actually true.

It's not hard to get more than a little nervous when Beck and his ilk start pushing the buttons of unstable, unthinking people, when Inhofe begins spouting the "revolution" word. The people who listen to Beck and Inhofe are often people who believe in force, in absolutes, in their own righteousness and they're being pushed by very irresponsible people into feeling that their backs are against the wall. I'm old enough to remember that much-softer rhetoric than what we're currently hearing had violent consequences.

"...So when President Obama claims there will be no "death panels" in his health care reform plans, why then does he have Dr. Death as one of his health care reform advisers?"-Henry

You are taking this comment totally out of context and he was writing in regards to something entirely different that what you attribute. Plus:

He is not an "adviser" to Obama...he's only written a couple of papers on the subject and the right has taken it completely out of the context for which it was written and then started calling him an Obama "adviser". This has been debunked so many times that you are really being lazy not to investigate beyond the propaganda the right has attempted to turn those comments into.\

No deatyh panels, no suggestion of death panels, Dr. Emanuel was not referring to HC or HC plans in his article which your comments took out of reference to it's context. Do some fucking research as I'm sure you don't intend to look like a complete fool and a rule of thumb should be...if a republican said it, it's almost always a lie.

All of these dittoheads with short common-name handles posting similar nonsense with similar writing styles, and ultimately cut-and-pasting the exact same pre-packaged talking point. . .

Henry, I call b***s*** on that post. You took one sentence out of context from a long, thoughtful article, you fail to indicate whether Emanuel in fact endorses that view or is citing it as one possible consideration, you fail to mention that he is talking specifically about making tough decisions about scarce resources like organs for transplant, and you spout a lot of hysteria and misrepresentation that comes straight from the Lyndon LaRouche organization. It's character assassination of a very ethical and honorable doctor who does NOT deserve slanderous epithets like "Dr. Death."

"At it again: McCaughey distorts Ezekiel Emanuel's writings to smear him as "Rationer-in-Chief"
5 hours and 22 minutes ago — 15 Comments

Serial health care misinformer Betsy McCaughey, who The New York Times reported has "largely quot[ed]" White House health care adviser Ezekiel Emanuel's "past writings out of context this summer," did so again -- and at length -- in an August 27 Wall Street Journal op-ed. Indeed, she distorted various passages of Emanuel's writings and interviews by cropping and misrepresenting his remarks -- some of which the Times had described in context only days earlier -- to smear him as "Obama's Health Rationer-in-Chief."
NY Times: McCaughey has "largely quot[ed]" Emanuel's "past writings out of context this summer"..."

It goes on into detail over the whole smear campaign but makes suggestions such as if there were only one available kidney donated and one possible recipient was an 82y/o handicapped man and the other was a 12 y/o healthy girl who would you give the kidney to....AAHAA...you're denying healthcare to the handicapped man who would surely die from your "death panel" decision.

Suggest you read the whole thing before posting the smear campaign here.

They (and their operatives) were very busy during the last election, churning out all kinds of bumpf that was designed to affect public opinion through blogs, letters to the editor, etc. And I expect that they are ramping up again.

I've listened to more Glenn Beck than I'd like to admit-- off the top of my head I can think of 3 totally batshit crazy things he's said that immediately reveals that anyone who likes and respects him is a scary, stupid person.

1) The morning after Obama's presser on health care reform Beck said that he realized that night what Obama's secret plan has been all along-- reparations. (How he gleans that-- he never really explains-- I have no idea.)

2) Beck said Obama's push for health care reform is just like Stalin, Hitler and Pol Pot. (This is beyond the pale, Beck may as well just come out and call him the anti-Christ while he's at it.)

3) Beck called Obama someone who hates white people AND said that he doesn't have anything against white people in the same 30 seconds. Even the people he was talking to at FoxNews thought it was strange and contradictory.

Beck is a joke that needs to be taken very seriously. Like Limbaugh, most of what he says is intended to upset people with half-truths and wild conspriracy theories. It works because his listeners get ALL of their news through a very narrow right-wing filter-- everything they know they get through FoxNews, Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, etc. They've been told to trust no one but them for the "truth," meanwhile they have created a reality where actual truth has no meaning, it's all just right-wing spin.

In a nutshell, Beck and his listeners are completely and totally voluntarily brainwashed. The more important question is what to do to counter it and to keep it from spreading and rotting more innocent brains.

Well, considering there never has been and never will be an anti-Christ (and even if there was/is, as far as I know he never harmed a soul), I would tend to think that calling Obama Stalin/Hitler/Pol Pot is far, far worse than calling him "anti-Christ".

It's OLIGARRRRH -- Beck's just speaking pirate.

I don't think there's an anti-Christ either, however, I'm sure there is in the world of Beck's followers and he is The Worst. Although I suppose maybe calling Obama the spawn of Satan might be even better.

I'm waiting for Beck to call say Obama is just like Ghengis Khan, Vlad the Impaler, Darth Vader, Godzilla and the Spanish Inquisition.

Beck had better watch his back -- Rush won't take second billing.

There can be only one.

Gee, I had been staying away from the intertubes cuz of Uncle Teddy and health care reform, my van being totaled, and finding out the for profit "community college' I've had a temporary job teaching RN students at is in a league that rivals the health insurance company giants.

Soooo, Scotty is also gone, there's no beaming anywhere and if Beck isn't crazy, I am the epitome of mental health. I'm thinking maybe it's time to do some drugs - then I realize there's no money for that.

Can I join the Peace Corps to get health insurance?

You people (especially the author) are not seeing the forest for the trees. Glenn has so much information that shows your Messiah for what he truly is (a Radical building a third-world Revolutionary government) that he can't even fit it into a week's worth of hourlong shows. He makes an honest mistake, but you all miss the point and focus on the mistake. It's a very easy example of oversimplification. You can't answer to his argument...you just attack his mistake.

Go ahead, find the one word I misspelled and disprove my whole point based on that. It should make you feel really good about yourself.

James, Beck's 'argument' is that if you combine the first letter of 'Obama' with the first letters of a bunch of other words you carefully pick, you get the word 'oligarchy'. Even if you have the presence of mind to correctly spell 'oligarchy' in that way, what exactly is such an exercise supposed to prove?

But what about the Dijon mustard? I hear he's going to start mandating they serve Dijon mustard in our childrens' school cafeterias. Oh, the horror!
