QUOTE OF THE DAY.... Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) spoke at an event in Colorado yesterday on her opposition to health care reform. She used the kind of dignified, restrained language we've come to expect from this distinguished lawmaker.

"This cannot pass. What we have to do today is make a covenant, to slit our wrists, be blood brothers on this thing. This will not pass. We will do whatever it takes to make sure this doesn't pass."

After talking up the slitting conservatives' wrists, Bachmann said reform has the capacity to "destroy this country forever," because reform proposals are "nothing more than slavery."

She added, "Something is way crazy out there."

So true, so true.

Paging the APA to denounce the suicide reference, APA please pick up the courtesy phone...

Posted by: TonyB on September 1, 2009 at 9:57 AM | PERMALINK

Assuming she's not suicidal, does she realize the diseases she can get from transmitting blood like that? She'd be a terrible leech on the public-subsidized healthcare which she receives as a Congresswoman.

I have a simple proposal-- All Congressmen/Senators who are opposed to universal healthcare, please give up your taxpayer-subsidized healthcare, and purchase private insurance on your own dime. Thank you.

Otherwise, you're the leech on the system you claim to hate.

Yes, Michele -- do slit your wrists. And remember, it's down the road not across the street.

Posted by: jcricket on September 1, 2009 at 9:58 AM | PERMALINK

Good idea, Michele. You first. Slit your wrist while alone in your house. Other Republicans will be along to join the "covenant" shortly.

No, don't call 911; it's just a little blood and you don't want to encourage these taxpayer-funded government services. It'll stop bleeding in a little while. Honest.

unfortunately the Obama administration showed its political ineptness in trying to ram the health care reform through Congress prior to the summer recess. Not taking the time to set up the conversation to win this one allowed the Republicans to make political hay out of Obama and Health Care reform.
At this point it is unlikely that any health Care reform package will truly bring reform. We are now seeing politicians but mainly lobbyists trying to protect their own piece of the money pie, while at the same time taking some from someone else. no one is talking true health Care REFORM, not the Democrats and not the Republicans. And as long as those two parties and partisans yell at each other, no health Care reform will be achieved. in my humble opinion, Democrats will pass something, something totally inept, will then declare victory and move on.
The losers will be the American citizens without health care.

I'd just add...hurry Michele or you'll be late for your comet.

Where do I send the razors?

Do you think her death panel would approve?

I think she's a little unsure about the definition of suicide mission. See: Monty Python's Life of Brian.

if you'll just look at jon carroll's article today in the sf chron.
oh, come on, just the first paragraph...

I don't know about all this doom and gloom talk. After the initial townhall disruptions the word seems to have gotten out that the opponents are ape shit crazy. The polls have stayed about the same and the Republicans have taken themselves out of the discussion. We all know that every Republican is opposed to any plan even if it helps Americans. There really isn't any thimg more for the press to cover.

Right now is the time for Democrats to really lay out their plans to the American people and to debate genuine issues. This might be the time to get things done.

The wrist slitting comment is about mingling her blood with other opponents. Kind of a Native American blood brother thing.

Rep. Bachman,

The line for conservative whack job wrist slitters forms to the left.

Why not consider donating a pint first?

Why not consider donating a pint first?

Wouldn't it have to be screened for excessive acidity first?

Posted by: shortstop on September 1, 2009 at 10:29 AM | PERMALINK

Shortstop,

Good point. To be safe, along with screens for HIV and acidity I think the Red Cross schould screen donors for stupidity. I wouldn't want to find out after the fact that Bachman's stupid genes infected a helpless accident victim.

Before she got married her last name was Jones. She's Jim Jones little sister. It runs in the family.

Posted by: burro on September 1, 2009 at 10:46 AM | PERMALINK

This notion that Republicans are blocking health care reform is a conspiracy theory. FOX News said so.

Posted by: Grumpy on September 1, 2009 at 10:46 AM | PERMALINK

One can only hope that those worthless losers will indeed slit their wrists. The world is overpopulated and we need to lower the number of morons for the good of the species.

Posted by: TCinLA on September 1, 2009 at 10:47 AM | PERMALINK

What a nincompoop! For blood-brother rituals, you cut your fingertip, which bleeds a lot but will heal up easily. If the woman wants to Darwin herself, I won't interfere, but let's be classy enough not to encourage it.

As for health care being tantamount to "slavery," boy would Sigmund Freud have a ball with the rhetoric coming out of these hysterics. A lot of white Americans are terrified of getting what they know in their heart of hearts that they probably deserve, and that African Americans might do to them everything that whites have done for centuries to African Americans. Ain't gonna happen, and the idea of level headed, moderate "no drama Obama" as some sort of a wild-eyed demagogue is hilarious, unless you're so frightened that you can't see the real world for your paranoid projections. But that's what Bachmann & co. are obviously afraid of.

THANK YOU FOR THIS IMPORTANT UPDATE

Posted by: norbizness on September 1, 2009 at 10:57 AM | PERMALINK

T-Rex,

Your comments make me realize that what is in part driving Crazy Michele and the others is that they don't want to see any programs like the Health Care Public Option instituted because it might possibly make them feel grateful for their federal government.

Their whole self image and group identity, based on "Leave me the fuck alone" conservatism, would crumble once a government-funded colonoscopy revealed pre-cancerous polyps in their intestines. They would rather die hating civilian federal agencies than experiencing a successful, government-supported early cancer intervention.

What's so despicable is that people like Rep. Bachman can't accept others might want that intervention. Crazy Michele wants people to hate her employer as much if not more than she does.

I would like to point out that slavery, for all of it's intrinsic evil and inhumanity, failed to "destroy this country forever".

So even if, in some parallel universe, there's a shred of logic to how health care reform is anything remotely like slavery, the argument still fails.

Posted by: short fuse on September 1, 2009 at 11:38 AM | PERMALINK

Blood and soil.

If only there were a strong man who could lead them and be unflinching and tell them what to do.

Posted by: cld on September 1, 2009 at 11:51 AM | PERMALINK

I think if were planning to attend a Bachmann event in the future, I'd bring my own beverage.

Posted by: doubtful on September 1, 2009 at 11:52 AM | PERMALINK

You write: Bachmann said reform has the capacity to "destroy this country forever," because reform proposals are "nothing more than slavery."

One wonders. Do people like her have any idea what goes on in the rest of the civilized world? There are so many nations where absolutely everyone in the country is cared for. No one goes bankrupt. There's a lot more choice (really, there is: Germans can choose from among 200 insurance plans and every doctor and hospital in that country). By every measure, health outcomes are better. And the amount spent on health care is much less than here.

Leaving everything else aside, the level of ignorance in America is stunning.

Posted by: CMcC on September 1, 2009 at 12:48 PM | PERMALINK

I have a vision of Ms. Bachmann wandering the streets of the capital, unwashed and wild eyed, muttering the same kinds of fantastic babble. No one pays any attention.

Posted by: Curmudgeon on September 1, 2009 at 12:53 PM | PERMALINK

Yup. Looks like the wicked witch has a mirror to look into now!

Posted by: Howey on September 1, 2009 at 1:25 PM | PERMALINK

I can think of one reform that had the capacity to "destroy this country forever." Giving women the right to vote and hold public office. If we'd never made that reform, this shrew would be cleaning her house instead of ranting in The House. Were we to follow her lead, this nation would be a Stone Age wasteland in four years.

* NOTE: I am in no way suggesting that women should not be allowed to vote or hold office. Just this one.

Posted by: chrenson on September 1, 2009 at 1:46 PM | PERMALINK

Do people like her have any idea what goes on in the rest of the civilized world?

No, they do not. Neither do they care. As far as they are concerned, America is the best in everything, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a demented traitorous liar who must be destroyed.

Posted by: thalarctos on September 1, 2009 at 1:46 PM | PERMALINK

...Michelle, Honey...slit your wrists now and avoid the coming rush.
