VAN JONES' OPINION OF THE GOP.... For a seven-month-old quote, this is generating a surprising amount of attention today.

A video in which White House green jobs adviser Van Jones calls Congressional Republicans (and himself) "a**holes" is quickly making the rounds on the Internet this morning.

Jones made the off-the-cuff remark in February, during his lecture at a Berkeley Energy and Resources Collaborative (BERC) event on the green economy. At the time, the Obama administration had not yet tapped Jones to serve as a special adviser on the White House's Council on Environmental Quality.

In the exchange, Jones was asked why a Republican president working with a Republican Congress can pass more of its agenda than a Democratic president working with a Democratic president.

"Well, the answer to that is, they're a**holes," Jones said. He added, "Barack Obama is not an a**hole. Now, I will say this: I can be an a**hole, and some of us who are not Barack Hussein Obama, are going to have to start getting a little bit uppity."

Jones later became the White House "green jobs" czar -- he had no official role in the administration when he made the remarks -- and later still, the man Glenn Beck has identified as the nation's #1 bogeyman.

As far as I can tell, neither the Republican Party nor its cable news network has yet called for Jones' ouster, and I'm hoping they won't. He did, after all, put himself in the same a**hole category as the GOP.

That said, it seems some conservatives are nevertheless offended by Jones' remarks. One right-wing blogger complained that the president's "minions" have failed to "elevate the tone."

Look, I realize it's not nice to call Republicans "a**holes," and had Jones been an administration official in February, this might be a more legitimate complaint.

But let's also be clear about the record here. Jones was a private citizen, joking around. In contrast, in 2004, then-Vice President Dick Cheney was approached in a friendly way on the Senate floor by a respected, long-time senator. Cheney said, in front of witnesses, "Go f*** yourself." He then refused to apologize, boasting on Fox News that he was glad he said it, because it made him "feel better."

For those worried about the quality of the political discourse, Obama's team has a long way to go before they reach Bush-era vulgarities.

When (candidate) Bush called Adam Nagourney an asshole (and Cheney agreed: "big time"), I'm pretty sure none of the wingnuts were bothered by it.

And didn't the president himself call a reporter an "a-hole"? Isn't that the source of Cheney's nickname, Big Time?

One right-wing blogger complained that the president's "minions" have failed to "elevate the tone."

That was Melissa Clouthier, who is an asshole.

But Van Jones was just telling like it is. They are assholes. In fact, by his definition as "assholes" as uppity, these guys take pride in being assholes. It's almost a compliment. But of course, it takes a real asshole to get offended by a comment that they would otherwise take as a compliment.

Telling it as it is bothers the assholes?

Who would've guessed.

Assholes.

He's right. They ARE assholes.

The New Yorker had a good article on Van Jones earlier this year (but I can't find it online). I'm encouraged that he is part of the administration and I'm not sure he should tone it down, either.

I never, every appointed anyone who called the other party names. Why can't Obama lead by my example?

Anybody seen sissy Tim Kaine ??

Van Jones for DNC Chairman and Howard Dean to replace Rahm Emmanuel !!

Playing with yourself is never very productive, that's why.

Jones later because the White House "green jobs" czar -- Steve Benen

"Became" rather than "because"? Steve, no offense, but you sound like you need a break. Where's Mrs Carpetbagger? She should administer hot tea with lemon, a shot of brandy, and prescribe bed rest for at least 24 hrs. Jeez, big guy, we need you; pace yourself.

Anyone who uses the term "minions" in reference to Obama's staff is revealing both their partisan biases and their agenda.

They also reveal themselves to be a classic example of an "asshole".

Gosh ... it stings when the insults are accurate.

Posted by: P-Dog on September 2, 2009 at 3:59 PM | PERMALINK

Why did they pass more of their agenda? First, I am not sure they did. But if they did, it probably had more to do with having more of their agenda in line with the moneyed powers that be in D.C. I guess that would make them major league assholes in the eyes of expert catalogers of political malfeasance and corruption.

And that right there, boys & girls, is the asshole-ist asshole in an extraordinarily assholey crop of assholes. He is, in fact the canker-ridden, pustule-laden asshole at the center of the pockmarked ass that is the Republican Party.

There. Now *I* feel better.

What was that famous quote? Something like:
"Give 'em Hell Harry"
to which he replied
"No, I just tell them the truth and they think it's hell"

Wasn't he talking about Republicans? Some things never change. They can dish it out, but can't take it.

To put things in perspective, let's just remember how the right wing mind works:

If a Christian fundamentalist calls a gay person a "faggot," the gay person is guilty of "attacking people of faith" if they object.

If Ann Coulter calls for the mass execution of the New York Times editorial board on charges of treason for printing a story on the Bush administration's undermining of the Constitution, that is not an attack on free speech. However, criticism of Ann Coulter for calling for the execution of reporters who do their job, that is an attack on free speech.

A video in which White House green jobs adviser Van Jones calls Congressional Republicans (and himself) "a**holes" is quickly making the rounds on the Internet this morning.

It's called laying the groundwork for obstructing cap and trade legislation. The GOP does propaganda like a pro, but they sure are assholes.

Posted by: about time on September 2, 2009 at 4:38 PM | PERMALINK

Jones clearly meant it as a compliment and said that if Obama is not going to crack heads, people like him would need to step up.

Posted by: Th on September 2, 2009 at 4:54 PM | PERMALINK

It's not just that Jones used that kind of language. It's that he said it while in his shirt sleeves.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/bush/bushcuss.asp

Upon spotting a veteran political reporter in the crowd and pointing him out to his running mate, Dick Cheney, as the two stood at the podium waving to the assembled crowd, Bush said, "There's Adam Clymer, major-league asshole from The New York Times." Cheney, also unaware the microphones were turned on, agreed, saying, "Oh yeah, he is, big time."

The poor (_o_)s are offended? They can (_x_)

Posted by: exlibra on September 2, 2009 at 5:17 PM | PERMALINK

So when GOPers call for Jones apology and resignation, that will be the clue that a**hole is a way worse expression than "fascist baby killer".

It helps to know the lingo when attempting to understand a wingnut cypher.

I think Jones was dead right even if he was a little too kind to the repubs. The republican rhetoric - now there is some nasty hateful speech, but I guess that is OK. Remember folks it's OK when a repub does it - Freedom of speech and all that!

We live in different worlds. This is a perfect example of the difference between the way conservatives look at the world and the way progressives look at it. It's okay to *be* an @sshole; just not okay to say the word '@sshole' (and it's this conservative legacy that forced me to replace the 'a' with '@' (just in case someone gets injured by flying characters).

Great example: My Republican/Christian Dad happened to catch a Jason Jones skit on TDS one evening during a recent visit. In this skit, he made fun of the Cheney remark. My Dad was so offended that he declared TDS and shows like it "what's wrong with America". My explaining that they were making fun of a phrase that Dick Cheney (the VP he voted for) actually *said* to someone on the Senate floor was useless. Jason Jones is *not* allowed to quote Dick Cheney saying 'go f*** yourself'; Dick Cheney *is* allowed to actually *say* 'go f*** yourself' to an associate.

The mind reels as usual. ;o)

JTK,

The snippet you included was of Steve's words. Well, and Cheney's. Not mine. I say this only to disabuse anyone of the notion that I traffic in any of that asterisky self censoring horseshit. Cheney is an asshole -- the puckery, brown starfish kind -- not some genteel simulacra strung together by cute little computer keys. That's for slightly sassy PTA e-mails & milquetoast bloggers.

That is all.

I prefer "bleeding heart" to "milquetoast" but I'm as happy with either epithet as I am with 'liberal', and have no more problem humoring the easily-offended (silly though it may be), than I have throwing in the occasional gratuitous expletive if it makes others feel comfortable.

Guilty as charged... and sorry for the misattribution, fuckface. ;o)

Not a problem, shitass. Oh, and you gave no offense. I just don't want any of those impressionable kids out there getting the idea that I traffic in asterisky euphemisms at the expense of full throated (or keyboarded, as the case may be) fuck-bombs.

And with that, it's after 5 where I am, so let me buy you a drink & tell you all about the blistered & dripping orifice who built a secret bunker underneath the Vice President's mansion.

Looks like your hero Van is also a TRUTHER!:

"NEW YORK CITY, NY (Oct. 26, 2004) An alliance of 100 prominent Americans and 40 family members of those killed on 9/11 today announced the release of the 911 Truth Statement, a call for immediate inquiry into evidence that suggests high-level government officials may have deliberately allowed the September 11th attacks to occur. The Statement supports an August 31st Zogby poll that found nearly 50% of New Yorkers believe the government had foreknowledge and consciously failed to act, with 66% wanting a new 9/11 investigation."

You'll find Van the Man at signature number 46.

Well done Barak.

Although this is probably a non-story and it will probably disappear in a few days it still indicates the ease with which we are letting our civility and decorum slip away. It doesn't matter who said it or what their political affiliations are, it's just another chip, another letting go, another lowering of decency in our society and that bothers me. l always have been and always will be aware of it when it happens and it will ALWAYS alarm me.

See, it's the news media that doesn't bother to fact check, the officials that harbor these things so close that they slip out every once in a while. The lowering of the bar just a little bit and letting it slide.

Well i have read most of the comments and all I can see is that we are not dealing with adults here. Sounds like we are dealing with little children, calling each other names because he dosent like this or she dosent like that. I do not see anyone trying to work together to make this place a better place for my children and grandchildren to live. All i see is a bunch of cry babies on both sides. When will the ADULTS get to work. It is going to take both sides to work hard and long to make this world better. havent we all worked against each other long enough to make the world what it is. So lets stop the name calling and the crying about he said she said crap. Lets roll up our sleves, allow people to be who they are, except it, and work together.

Google Nano Thermite 911 ; This is the best evidence to support inside job demolition of the twin towers and building 7. There is no question that there is nano-thermite in all the dust from the demo. No Question. Perfect chips of nano-thermite all over in it. Military Grade Nano-Thermite. Hmm Military Grade; go figure. Van Jones was right about 9/11 being a demolition anyways; now we just need to find out exactly WHO placed all that NANO-THERMITE throughout the buildings from top to bottom; floor to floor.
