Because the only thing that they want to "conserve" is their power and their wealth. If it benefits the common person, the middle and lower classes, w/o enriching them, then it is 'socialist' and 'communist' and 'Marxist'. If it only benefits the rich, then it is capitalism, pure and true, the stuff that dreams are made of. They don't want capitalism, they want oligarchy. That is the message that progressives and Dems need to be spreading, because it is true.

To be honest, I think conservatives hate America because at its best, America offers a chance for a decent life to everyone -- not just to conservatives.

They can't stand that idea; it is utterly abhorrent to them; and they'll do just about anything to avoid participating in it or even accepting passively that it can exist.

Just ask why they don't want a universal health-care system here, for example. (Cue and loop forever: I don't see why MY money should pay for someone else to have medical care! Let them take care of their own damn care! I don't see why MY money should ...)

While progressives customarily don't accuse the other side of hating America as the other side likes to do, it is becoming clear that they do, in fact, hate America. They like to see bullying people and waving the flag as patriotic, but find American values, such as rule of law, offensive. Maybe we should start asking seriously "why do conservatives hate America?"

The part I find interesting about this whole dust up is the threats I hear about people keeping their kids out of school to prevent their children from hear a message from the president.

It's seems part of a broader anti-intellectual dynamic from extreme ideologues (mostly on the right, but even occasionally on the left), to want to shelter their children from hearing anything outside of their own dogma. Hence the popularity in some circles for home-schooling.

Do you want to wallow in your own ignorance? Do you want to be left behind in the global economy? OK, fine. Just don't drag my country down with you OK? If your kids can be converted into a socalist zombie by listening to one speech from Obama, I would be amazed. My kids can think for themselves.

On local TV, they interviewed some guy who doesn't want his kids (public school students) to hear the president. No joke, he was wearing a T-shirt that says, "I Can't Hear You Unless I Have a Beer In My Hand."

Hate to tell you but you are not the only game in town, and not necessarily the smartest. Look Nancy Pelosi made it quite clear my way or the highway to both sides of the aisle, and pretty well step all over President Obama's hope for a bipartisan government.
