ADD PERRY TO THE LIST.... The love/hate relationship between leading Republican officials and the Obama administration's stimulus package has been interesting to watch lately. The same GOP leaders who railed against recovery efforts, rejected the very idea of government spending improving the economy, voted against it en masse, and even went to court in some cases to fight against trying to rescue the economy, suddenly discover they kind of like stimulus spending after all.

We've seen this play out with everyone from Bobby Jindal to Mitch McConnell, Eric Cantor to Georgia's Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson. It looks like we can add Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) to the list.

Gov. Rick Perry rallied opposition to federal stimulus spending, but he now is the manager of one of the biggest pots of federal gold in Texas: crime grants to local law enforcement agencies.

And those grants have become an integral part of Perry's political machine.

Perry in the past has decided what law enforcement agencies receive about $23 million a year in Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance grants. Now, because of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Perry will have an additional $90 million to hand out.

While Perry's office is the conduit for the federal money, the governor chooses which agencies receive the money and how it is spent. The political payoff has been great.... Every time Perry doles out the federal Byrne grants, he sounds like the money is his.

While delivering $2 million to East Texas law enforcement, Perry said, "Texas is tough on crime and remains dedicated to equipping our law enforcement with the resources necessary to protect our citizens and ensure the safety of our communities."

Of course, if Perry had his way, those "necessary resources" wouldn't exist.

I'm sure if the Texas governor were willing to apologize for trashing the president's recovery efforts, and concede that he was wrong to oppose the Obama plan, the White House would be gracious in response.

Silly wabbit...

Republicans never apologize, regardless of how wrong they are! The democrats are the 'apology party', regardless of how right they are!

Perry has another thing in common with others on your list. Absolutely no credit given to the White House. Perry, like Jindahl and others, pretends to be the generous benefactor as if the grant money is coming out of his own pocket. For purposes of re-election of course. Perry is one despicable asshole.

Perry (et all) vs the White House:

Sort of like the ex wife trash talking her ex, while cashing the alimony checks. . .

Real Americans understand that fighting crime is the most important job a governor has. It's not surprising that liberals find reason to criticize when Perry is doing just that.

I look forward to the day when Texas secedes, preferably with all the crazies moving there first.

And then I really look forward to watching what happens next.

True, Steve, but it wouldn't matter. On that day the world would end.

Well, if I believed in the devil, that would be it exactly it, FRP. None of us will ever live long enough to hear a GOPer admit s/he was wrong about anything, much less apologize.

At the time the stimulus was being passed, when all the republicans were against it, I figured that in the end it would force local officials to work with the feds to dole out the money. Actually that was in the legislation, so no surprise. But this working with the feds, the Obama Admin, would be used as evidence that the stimulus was worthwhile because the local politicians would be required to play ball.

And that is what is happening. They can take credit, but come election time, there will be a long record of bashing those who voted for the stimulus getting bashed by those who worked hard to pass out the money once it was available.

Is there any chance the local democrats will use this in their campaigns: if it was up to the republicans, we wouldn't have this money in the first place, we would be in worse shape than we are in today, probably the second Great Depression.

A couple of years ago Perry came to South Texas not even knowing that his office had turned down a law enforcement grant request for the region.

Whoever is running the governor's office, it isn't Rick Perry. He isn't bright enough.

He turned down the portion of the stimulus money that would pay for extended unemployment claims or to extend unemployment benefits to part-time employees who have lost their jobs. As a result a semi-retarded lady in my church who lost the only kind of job she could get, not only lost any subsidized healthcare she had (she's diabetic and going without her meds) but is living off of her near death retired father. He's scum!
