SHIFTING WITH THE WIND.... Of all the nation's prominent political players, Mitt Romney should be more careful than most about "flip-flopping." It's not entirely fair to hold Romney to a different standard than everyone else, but that's the price Romney pays for completely reinventing himself. When one goes from moderate, blue-state pragmatist to right-wing, neo-con culture warrior in short order, observers get a little more sensitive about 180-degree turns.

So, for example, these Romney remarks from Saturday morning stood out.

"When government is trying to take over health care, buying car companies, bailing out banks, and giving half the White House staff the title of czar -- we have every good reason to be alarmed and to speak our mind!"

Most of this is garden-variety nonsense/pandering. It's not exactly shocking to learn that Romney is more than willing to play the role of hack to impress the Republican Party's base.

But Romney, in February*, said bailing out banks was "necessary to prevent a cascade of bank collapses. For free markets to work, there has to be a currency and a functioning financial system."

Perhaps he's changed his mind. Perhaps he's been unimpressed with the ways in which the banking system has been stabilized.

Or, more likely, Romney thinks this is what right-wing activists want to hear, so he'll disregard his own beliefs and previous statements to score a few points with the Teabagging crowd.

Andrew Sullivan added, "There's something quite refreshing about his open refusal to have any principles, or even to worry about the slightest consistency between one statement and the next."

I'm not sure if "refreshing" is the right word, but Romney is certainly in a league of his own. Some lead and some change course whenever the winds shift -- Romney is in the latter category.

No one can say with any certainty who Mitt Romney will be tomorrow, and when he might shift back in the other direction should it suit his ambitions.

"But Romney, earlier this year and during the Obama presidency, said bailing out banks was "necessary to prevent a cascade of bank collapses. For free markets to work, there has to be a currency and a functioning financial system."

Did you mean Bush's presidency?

Steve, when you started the Romney flip-flop post, I assumed you'd point out Romney's prior position on health insurance.

Romney in 2005:

Mass. Gov. Romney's health care plan says everyone pays

By Julie Appleby, USA TODAY

You have to buy car insurance if you own a car. You have to buy home insurance to get a mortgage. Why don't you have to buy health insurance?

Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney re-ignited that debate last month when he announced a plan to expand health coverage to all the state's residents, with a caveat that those who don't buy coverage could face a penalty.

"We can't have as a nation 40 million people — or, in my state, half a million — saying, 'I don't have insurance, and if I get sick, I want someone else to pay,' " says Romney, a Republican who says he might run for president in 2008.

Flip-flopper indeed.

As Rep. Joe Barton might say, Mitt Romney talking is the planet's way of moving heat around.

"Perhaps he's changed his mind"

More likely he KNOWS that his "base" has the memory span of a. . .God, the appropriate analogy escapes me!

"we have every good reason to be alarmed and to speak our mind!"

Now that explains everything! Apparently everybody at the gathering is forced to share just one teeny piece of a single brain.

The corporate empty suit of hypocrisy doesn't want to be forgotten. The barking dogs appreciate the howling and it makes Romney feel so important.

The insanity continues to pose itself as legitimate rhetoric as Romney runs to jump in front of the parade. Once there he is informed as to what to say...but no matter what, he's still a Mormon...and they don't play well with others

Mitten's pronouncements are no more illogical than showing up at a rally advocating 'Keep Government Out of Healthcare' and at the same time 'Keep Government Out of my Medicare.' Republithug voters are activated not by argumentation, but by sticking your finger in their limbic brains. Once you get them agitated, you can leave them to self-stimulate and go on to try to scoop up some independents with a veneer of reasonableness.

That said, I don't think Mittens has the juice for another go round. Even when he was considered a frontrunner of sorts, he had to throw in a huge amount of personal cash to keep going, and I have to assume his financial position is less favorable now (what is he doing for income these days, anyway?).

Mitt Romney is an honest politician -- once bought, he stays bought -- but he's so rich, he can't be bought. So he swings in the slightest wind, tacking to the right when necessary, or to the left when it's convenient. It might be refreshing to have a president who can be "urged" in this manner; all progressives would need do is keep the pressure on, pointing him to the left, since he has no inner compulsion to go to the right.

Unfortunately, that means opposing the right-whinge's "wind," so a Romney madministration would engender even more acrimony and struggle. That means the Right, with its open-carry gun fetish, and its over-the-top penchant for violent speech, coupled with the MSM/Fox mendacity continuum, would likely "win" any short-term struggle. The result would be like it is today without the surety of a sane leader. I'm not sure we want to "go there."

How can Mittens say it with a straight face? Look at what he did in Massachusetts with his Health Connector. Go ahead, Google it.

The Republican party has now prepared their ship for ludicrous speed.

as a seasoned practioner of the art myself, i think sully was engaging in a bit of snark.

Posted by: mellowjohn on September 21, 2009 at 1:15 PM | PERMALINK

That isn't even in his only flip-flop. As many have pointed out, he signed the universal health care bill in Massachusetts. AND he wrote an op-ed last fall calling for putting GM and Chrysler through a structured bankruptcy.

The other risk about flip-flopping for Romney is that you can dog-whistle his religion by running an ad about Romney's flip-flops and, at the end, ask "What does Mitt Romney really believe?"

Posted by: Misplaced Patriot on September 21, 2009 at 1:31 PM | PERMALINK

btw...When will these tea bagging goobers come to understand that they are the minority and that it's their ideas that we soundly rejected. When will they stop pretending they represent the majority of Americans and stop referring to themselves as the "American People".

Voted out and soundly rejected by tens of millions compared to your 70,000 makes you the minority no matter how much you stomp your feet and throw tea tantrums. You may speak for each other but you sure as hell don't speak for the rest of us. We finally "took our country back"...from you and yours...and now we are trying to fix it. FDR gave pretty speeches too and he defeated Hitler. You baggers are so fuc**d and the largest collection of selfish self centered ignorant A-holes in America. And that's a compliment.

And this strategy worked so well for Weathervane McCain.

Time to start working on another flip-flop list, Steve.

Who can forget this brilliant analysis from the Politico:

Cesar Conda, Republican strategist, former Romney and Cheney advisor:
Would a government-appointed auto industry czar make any real difference? I would normally say no, unless that czar was former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who has outlined some tough love medicine for Detroit here. Before entering politics, Romney earned a reputation in the business world as a turnaround artist. Most importantly, the Michigan-native Romney has the auto industry in his bloodstream, as he explained in a speech before the Detroit Economic Club earlier this year....

Then again, maybe not.

As I recall, there was actual advocates of this.

steve, if you don't like sully's "refreshing" how about "entertaining?"

he can pander til the cows come home. but i keep wondering when it's gonna finally sink in with the mittster than the base doesn't think he's an actual christian....

What part of this is "inconsistent"? Romney consistently shows nuance in his ability to discuss complex economic issues, something neither his rivals nor the President possess.

Yes, a solution was merited, but Romney didn't say bailing out banks (on a small scale) was not justified, only that citizen concern is justified.

Romney is criticizing government's overreach of power, not it's attempt to prop up the banking industry to save the economy.

Democrats are grasping at straws, showing their desperation.

Considering how little trust the President has at the moment, I think it is refreshing to see Romney presenting an alternative, likely superior perspective on the economy. I look forward to voting honest Mitt into office in 2012.

Romney's strength is his character, which is why his political enemies want to take that away from him with whatever nonsense they can.

Mitt's positions are fully in harmony.

Maybe you should consider F. Scott Fitzgerald's advice:

"The test of a first rate intelligence is the ability to hold two [seemingly] opposed ideas in the mind at the same time and still retain the abiliity to function."

Romney passes this test. Apparently you don't.

Recall that Mitt Romney was scarred by his two tours of combat duty in Vietnam during the height of that war. OK, technically not IN Vietnam. But he is on record as saying he wished he'd served there. But he did crisscross France during those years, in an attempt to convert that country of cheese eating papists to Mormonism. He served his time hell. If on occasion he manifests symptoms of traumatic stress disorder, I think even liberals should thank him for his service, and cut him a little slack. Don't you?

Posted by: JW on September 21, 2009 at 5:43 PM | PERMALINK

I thought the question to ask the potential GOP presidential candidates was, "Do you believe in creationism?" I now see it should be, "If you elected president, will you have any czars in your administration?"

The headline at The Washington Independent reads:

"Romney Slams Bailouts That He Used to Support"

Apparently he was for it before he was against it.
But I just can't shake this feeling of deja vu. (Or is that deja entendu?)
What's the matter with Massachusetts?
