THEY'RE LAUGHING AT HIM, NOT WITH HIM.... We've seen plenty of examples of health care reform opponents trying to mislead the public at town-hall events. We haven't, however, seen many examples of these opponents getting mocked by their audiences.

In this video, Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.), who is currently running for the Senate, warned his Kansas constituents that Democratic reform proposals would cap physicians' wages. Specifically, the far-right lawmaker claims, "[T]hey're gonna set up a committee to determine what every doctor in America will make. They will set that fee, every doctor will make the same."

As a factual matter, this is hopelessly ridiculous. Tiahrt must know he's telling an over-the-top lie, but he obviously doesn't care.

But the key here is noticing the audience's reaction -- they recognized the claim as nonsense, and began groaning at Tiahrt's dishonesty.

Chris Harris added, "Kansas is a very conservative state home to some of President Obama's more fervent critics. Had Rep. Tiahrt stuck to some of the more common fear-mongering falsehoods surrounding the health care debate, he probably would have gotten away with it. However, he decided to swing for the fences by making up one of the most ridiculous claims to surface in the health care debate -- and the crowd didn't buy it."

Any Catch-22 fans out there? This reminds me of the Lepages glue gun, rumoured to be possessed by the Germans, which would glue together a whole squadron of planes in mid air.

It's funny that the town-hallers have been willing to buy pretty much every ridiculous claim the Repugs have put out there, until now. But when they're told that doctors will have their salaries capped, they're like, come on, how gullible do you think we are?!?

If ever there was something that deserved a "You lie!" catcall from the audience it was the pile of horse manure Tiahrt served up.

I'm not sure it's absolutely clear that they were reacting to the falsehood as false, as opposed to reacting to what he said as if they believed it and found it ridiculous. He continued as if he thought the latter. There's enough stupid out there that I'm not at all sure they rejected his claim.

those jerks in kansas can go ahead and laugh - they'll pay for it later when this prick and his comrades retake the House. Then those pointy-headed liberal constituents better run for their lives.

Sadly, I'm afraid Sid Schwab @1:03 may be right. I live in the KC metro, just 4 miles into Missouri, so I know. Notice, too, one lady shaking her head at the tragedy of the doctors being unable to buy houses with salaries of a mere $95,000.

And, there were not "doctors" in the room? That says something for the constituency of this moron. So, there is not one licensed physician in the USA who will counter this statement? Or not one MSM outlet that will question it? That is the travesty. The Congressperson can say anything and there is no pushback from any "legitimate" news agency. The people cannot be expected to research every lie told by the right or the "left". They would have no time to watch Dancing with the Stars or the daily soaps.

WTF, over.

Should've stuck with the race card. They would've bought that!

There is a larger dynamic then the obvious.

Republicans are so ingrained with protecting the high income earners that politicians can argue in town hall meeting in Kansas that doctors won't make enough in hopes that the statement will get votes.

Pathetic, even if it didn't work.

Steve, do you really think they recognize his dishonesty and are groaning that his fiction is nonsense? It could be that they are eager to believe that the bill actually contains such laughable stupidity.

I think you give his audience too much credit.

Nothing about this seemed like they were laughing at him. The whole thing seemed like a typical "those stupid democrats" laugh reaction. No additional hands went up to challenge the claim, and the laughter immediately settled down so Tiahrt could be heard again. This was an attentive, appreciative audience that was there to hear a politician they like. Wishful thinking, I'm afraid.

It seems like Kansans won't vote for anyone who is smarter than the average bear.

Having been to a couple of town halls, I'm sure "st" is right. Wishful thinking.
