MONDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* Over the weekend, two suicide car bombs "killed 16 people and wounded about 150 others in separate attacks in northwestern Pakistan."

* More provocative steps from Iran: "Locked in a deepening dispute with the United States and its allies over its nuclear program, Iran said that its Revolutionary Guards test-fired missiles with sufficient range to strike Israel, parts of Europe and American bases in the Persian Gulf."

* While most Senate Democrats believe the health care reform debate is entering the home stretch, Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) thinks it's just getting started. He also reiterated his opposition to a public option: "I don't see it happening."

* German Chancellor Angela Merkel claimed victory in her country's elections yesterday.

* President Obama will fly to Copenhagen at the end of the week to encourage the voting members of the International Olympic Committee to award Chicago the 2016 summer games. It's not unprecedented -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair went to Singapore to lobby in support of London winning the 2012 Olympics.

* An assassination survey on Facebook gets the Secret Service's attention.

* William Safire died yesterday at age 79.

* Jennifer Nix does a beautiful job explaining why she loves her socialist kidney.

* Last week, the Washington Post's Michael Gerson wrote another weak column. Soon after, the Washington Post's Ezra Klein respectfully noted some of the column's flaws. Apparently annoyed, Gerson wrote a cheap and insulting response. Spencer Ackerman weighed in with a defense of Ezra that I very much enjoyed.

* A leading executive of an Indiana-based insurance company sent a racist, anti-Obama email from his company account earlier this month. It has cost the insurer its account with the city of Bloomington.

* I wouldn't want to take a class taught by Peggy Noonan.

* A good item from David Broder on President Obama's national security team.

* Birthers are now running an infomercial in seven states.

* If Mike Huckabee's rhetoric is any indication, right-wing hatred for the United Nations remains strong.

* 50 helpful facts about health insurance reform.

* The right's interest in Bill Sparkman's death is taking some odd twists and turns.

* And finally, just in time for the holidays, it's the Michele Bachmann action figure. Seriously. (thanks to reader J.B. for the heads-up)

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

OK the Bachmann figure looks just like the Pocahantis action figure. And the Sara Palin action figure with the miniskirt and thigh holster? Hubba hubba!

And finally, just in time for the holidays, it's the Michele Bachmann action figure.

But do its eyes spin in opposite directions like original?

I may be late to the party on this, but,

when did it become legal to advertise guns on tv?

I wouldn't want to take a class taught by Peggy Noonan.

Really? I would, especially if it was math, it would have helped me in differential equations:

"Solve this differential equation - dy/dt +p(t)y = g(t)"

Answer:
Some things in life need to be mysterious, Sometimes you need to just keep walking.

I feel confident I'd get an "A".

If Mike Huckabee's rhetoric is any indication, right-wing hatred for the United Nations remains strong.

Just another instance of the schizophrenia of the right-wing xtianists. On the one hand, they want Revelation to happen in their lifetime (even though it was only admitted to the canon as having already occurred with the loss of the 2nd temple in Jerusalem; note how many anti-christs they see every year). On the other hand they want to put it off as long as they can (the UN represents the "one world government" depicted in the aformention "holy" revelation).

Can't these religious idealogues make up their mind?

Shouldn't that be a Michele Bachmann INACTION figure?

I mean, it IS the party of "NO!!!!"

Somewhere out there, some savvy collector is compiling a complete set of action figures of politicians who became jokes in very short order. The first and most valuable acquisition of course would be the Bush in a Flight Suit Doll, but Palin and Bachmann will be worthy members of the collection as well.

"William Safire died yesterday at age 79"

Chimpy Bush had the temerity to award him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

For what, defending the Nixon, Reagan, and Bushie crimes all these past decades ?

Apparently annoyed, Gerson wrote a cheap and insulting response.

This must have been really grating for Michael Gerson. There he is, wordsmith of the highest caliber who for years chewed his pencil in the employ of one of the finest presidents this country has ever seen.

When that noble endeavor came to its end, as all good things inevitably must, good old Michael took up dispensing his profound insights via one of the nations premier newspapers.

And then comes along this not-yet-dry-behind-the-ears whippersnapper, this DFH parvenu and dares criticize his work. In his own newspaper!! What has the world come to!

I wouldn't want to take a class taught by Peggy Noonan.

I hear she sheds a tear at the end of each class.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel claimed victory in her country's elections yesterday.

The irony of yesterdays election results in Germany is not so much that Angela Merkel will continue to be Chancellor, but the fact that the German electorate gave the neo-liberal FDP its strongest election result in the post-WW II era and elevated that party to a coalition partner for Merkel's conservatives. In the very same moment when it ought to be obvious to anybody with more than two functioning brain cells how much neo-liberalism has managed to f**k-up the world economy.

Let's just get it over with. Ask Israel the year, month, day, and time of day it wants us to attack Iran- and then do it.

It is all about them, right? Or is it unpatriotic for this American to phrase it so bluntly?

My opinion for the day is that Obama scored points with the G20 summit. It can be observed that subject matters have changed in the past days. He looks like every bit the leader. The Republicans look every bit the obstructionists. The death of Mr. Safire reminds us of natterings of naysayers.
The October issue of the American Legion Magazine speaks of peacekeepers holding Haiti in check, with this standing as an example of a U.S. peacekeeping operation that benefits U.S. interests...
Tiger Woods is featured, speaking of growing up in a military family.
Seems like the Limballs and insHannities are marginalized right now.

Think Progress actually has a screen capture of the graphics... Whoever put that piece of garbage together was clever but only half so. The "thingie" is called "Barack (in all capitals) and they replaced the "A" with the Russian "D". The "gut impression" (socialist!) is about right I guess but, to anyone who reads Russian...

Back in Poland, we all had to learn Russian, because USSR was our "bestest" friend. And we learnt English, because US was our "worstest" enemy. It's surprising to find out that y'all never bothered to even try and learn anything about your enemies, including the language.

Commentor Mars' take on Peggy Noonan bears repeating:

"I'd rather chew my own dick off than take a class with this crank."

...wordsmith of the highest caliber who for years chewed his pencil....

Must've been one of those lead-based-paint Chinese pencils that are flooding the market, ever since his "masters" outsourced the domestic pencil painting industry....

Huckabee on the UN: "It has become the international equivalent of ACORN."

Do these people even realize how ridiculous they sound to anyone outside their Fox News bubble?

The creator of the Bachmann Toy in CT:
"We just follow what's going on in the media," Herobuilders founder Emil Vicale told me. He said they start thinking about making an action figure "once people start getting a lot of play or a lot of interest or doing some really stupid thing."

Bachmann certainly fits the bill of doing something really stupid... all that's left to do now is get her out of office. Support her opponent, Dr. Maureen Reed:

It should be noted that European neo-libs are quite different from USAmerican neo-libs. The Euro version, for example, want to combat global warming, are pro-alternative energy, pro-unions, and pro-social welfare safety-net.

It should also be noted that while the FDP gained, the Far Left and the Greens also gained. Merkel's party actually lost a percentage pt, and the big losers were the SDP, who really only have themselves to blame. Merkel will be forming a gvmt with the FDP, but even then she won't have a majority.
