MAYBE BOEHNER NEEDS TO GET OUT MORE.... Well, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) asked for it.

Boehner claimed, with a semi-straight face, that he has yet to meet a regular "American" who favors the option -- despite polls showing that a majority of voters support to the idea of having the choice of a government plan.

"I'm still trying to find the first American to talk to who's in favor of the public option, other than a member of Congress or the administration" said Boehner, whose sole recent foray into a public discussion of health care reform was a tea-party-style event in Ohio a few weeks back.

"I've not talked to one and I get to a lot of places," he told reporters at his weekly press availability. "I've not had anyone come up to me -- I know I'm inviting them -- and lobby for the public option."

Really? He's "inviting" supporters of a public option to let him know about their position?

Boehner probably meant this as a throwaway line, and didn't think it through. But it's causing something of a stir.

Many Dems are noting, for example, that 57% of Ohioans -- Boehner's home state -- support a public option. The Minority Leader may "get to a lot of places," but maybe he needs to travel his own state a little more.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has launched an online petition for public option supporters to email Boehner about their support for the policy. The Progressive Change Campaign Committee (PCCC) has launched a campaign of its own. HCAN has sent out a petition to its national list, and as of this afternoon, there's even a Facebook group on this. (Update: What's more, American United For Change put together a video on this, and I've been told that AFSCME has organized phone calls to Boehner's office from public option supporters.)

Several House Dems have also taken the opportunity to ridicule Boehner's limited sources of contact.

Rep. Chris Murphy (D-CT): "[I]t's pretty clear John Boehner isn't hanging out with the people he represents when he goes home. Maybe he should change up his golf foursome to include fewer Republican cheerleaders and hit the links with a few regular people."

Rep. John Yarmuth (D-KY): "There are plenty of average Americans in Louisville who support the public insurance option, and I'd be happy to personally pay for one of them to fly to Washington to tell John Boehner why, if he will agree to meet with them in public. Shoot, I'll pay for John to come to Louisville, if that will make it easier for the Minority Leader."

And Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz: "Minority Leader Boehner clearly hasn't been listening to the American people."

I haven't noticed if the major news outlets have picked up on this -- I kind of doubt it -- but it's nice to see the left pounce on a foolish remark like the one Boehner offered up yesterday.

In Orange John's defense, you've never been to the 3rd District of Ohio. True story -last time we (I'm a musician) we played up in Butler County, a nice young man in a John Deere hat quizzed me at length about my choice in foreign beers, er it was a Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Did it. Took 45 seconds.

John B isn't in the 3rd, he's in the 8th. Anyhow, his house is about 15 minutes from mine.. Maybe I should go his neighborhood and introduce myself?

Give me a call, Johnny, and name the place and time - I'd be honored to provide you with a tutorial on the real world.

You can email John Boehner and let him know you're a regular American who favors the Public Option.

I just did. Wasn't hard at all.

I've been to numerous country clubs and golf courses lately, and I haven't heard one person talk about wanting a public option!

Hey Moderator, clean-up needed in aisle 4, otherwise known as the "Olympics Fever" thread below.

You have physical threats flying and fake (hopefully) addresses being posted. While amusing for its puerility, I'm guessing Washington Monthly doesn't need the aggravation.

Posted by: Dwight on October 2, 2009 at 3:48 PM | PERMALINK

Kind of dumb to say you haven't met a single person in favor of the public option.

Boehner isn't the only elected official who seems to forget what governing is all about.

We send these clowns to DC with the noble idea that they represent their constituents. But it appears that lobby land rules, forget real Americans.

The onus is on the elected official to find out what's on our minds. Why should us citizens have to if our input is selectively filtered?

Here's a toast to real leadership in DC. To the rest of you, Dems or Repubs, GFYS.

My email to Boehner-

Dear Representative Boehner:

I am an American, and I support the public option. In fact, I am currently watching my husband be disabled (extremely quickly) by MS. He is losing the feeling in his legs, among other things, and we are unable to afford the doctor's visits, MRIs and medications necessary to control or improve his condition.

Until you come up with a plan, any plan, that doesn't involve me losing my husband, you need to start thinking seriously about the public option.

Sincerely,

XXXX XXXXXXXXXX

I hope Boehner gets SO many emails and calls from the57% of Ohioians and regular Americans that it crashes his server and phone system. How do we the people get our country back from the corporations and lobbyists?

Posted by: nodak on October 2, 2009 at 4:01 PM | PERMALINK

nodak "How do we the people get our country back from the corporations and lobbyists?"

Well, we need to organize. Further, I learned one trick from my grandfather, a former bank president: Buy stock in those corporations, and then proceed to exercise in full your rights as an activist shareholder.

And no, I'm not being caustic or snide. Thanks in large part to an effective public education effort by CIW (Coalition of Immokalee Workers) and union allies, a grassroots revolt amongst McDonald's common stock shareholders ultimately forced that corporation to agree to pay Florida tomato pickers a decent living wage, at five cents more per bushel of tomatoes.

So, if you've got money to do so, be a socially activist capitalist. Buy stock in a company you'd like to see mend its ways, and then make it clear that your interest in that company will be more than fiscally passive. You can become a corporate watchdog, because you have a right to attend shareholder meetings, and to freely voice your thoughts and concerns at those meetings to the powers-that-be. I think you'd be surprised to learn how many other common stock shareholders might share your views. And then, like what happened at McDonald's Corp., you organize yourselves to make a difference.

so palin is a foreign policy expert because she can see russia..

but boehner can't support a public option because he hasn't met such a person..

friggin republicans...

Posted by: mr. irony on October 2, 2009 at 4:40 PM | PERMALINK

I think you have to remember that Boner said "regular Americans" - which he probably defines as "one of the 21% or so US citizens who still identify with my party."

I hope the Personal Failures of this country bury this Fuck in excrement. I emailed him with my disgust...and applied it to the reader as I know he will never actually read what I wrote. You need to include the employees in your comments, as the addressee will not ever read your actual email/fax/letter. That is why he can say that he has never spoken with anyone who is for the Public Option. Because, he doesn't talk to us.

Posted by: st john on October 2, 2009 at 5:14 PM | PERMALINK

The "major" news outlets won't pick up on Boner's drek, since Drudge won't pick up on it (for obvious reasons.)

Fox News is all over Boehner's ridiculous comments.

Perhaps Boehner should relinquish HIS public option insurance plan. You know, the one he has for being a Congressman.

Boehner's Washington phone number:

CALL THAT LYING SACK OF CRAP!

Posted by: Varecia on October 2, 2009 at 7:27 PM | PERMALINK

I called, but there was no answer. He still have not heard from anyone for the PO. He does not answer his phone. He doesn't even have staff todo so.
I wish him only ill will. What rhymes with lie?

Thanks for the link to Boehner's email, Cap'n Chucky. I wrote and told him that since I live just down the road from him, I'd be glad to stop by so he could meet a real American who wants a public option in person.

(No, he's not my congresscritter, I'm one of the lucky ones represented by Jean Schmidt.)

Posted by: Ohio Mom on October 2, 2009 at 10:07 PM | PERMALINK

I have the dubious honor of living in his district and his local office is a half mile down the road. A couple dozen of us showed up on four hours notice at the office today and made it clear to his staffer that we support the public option. We asked for an appointment to tell him that in person, without success. Another visit is being planned for next week. With more time to get the word out, we hope to have a much bigger showing.

Maybe Boehner organizes his town hall meetings the way George Bush did?

It would explain having met no one who ever disagreed with him.
