DNC TAKES OFF THE GLOVES.... There were certain similarities between the Taliban's reaction to President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize and the Republican National Committee's reaction. When one GOP congressional leader said earlier this year that he'd like to see the Republican Party emulate the Taliban, this probably isn't what he meant.
Nevertheless, the Democratic National Committee is taking off the gloves this morning.
"The Republican Party has thrown in its lot with the terrorists -- the Taliban and Hamas this morning -- in criticizing the President for receiving the Nobel Peace prize," DNC communications director Brad Woodhouse told POLITICO. "Republicans cheered when America failed to land the Olympics and now they are criticizing the President of the United States for receiving the Nobel Peace prize -- an award he did not seek but that is nonetheless an honor in which every American can take great pride -- unless of course you are the Republican Party.
"The 2009 version of the Republican Party has no boundaries, has no shame and has proved that they will put politics above patriotism at every turn. It's no wonder only 20 percent of Americans admit to being Republicans anymore -- it's an embarrassing label to claim," Woodhouse said.
As DNC statements go, it doesn't get much harder hitting than this.
Greg Sargent noted, "Dems intend to go on the offensive today by holding up Republican criticism of Obama's Nobel as the latest example of Republicans desperately hoping for America's failure, placing it alongside GOP cheer at America's loss of the Olympics as evidence of an unmistakable pattern." Greg added that Republicans run the risk of "feeding the GOP-wants-America-to-fail meme."
The Republican strategy here makes a certain degree of strategic sense. The president was just honored with one of the world's most prestigious accolades, and the GOP has an interest in undermining any potential benefits the White House might receive as a result. But coming on the heels of last week's delight over the U.S. losing the Olympics, Republicans have set themselves up as the party that roots against the country, and this morning, echoes the rhetoric of the Taliban.
Steele & Co. are making things easy for the DNC, and the party isn't going to waste the opportunity.
For the GOP, this isn't even tricky: try giving graciousness a try. The public will respect you for it.

Wow. At last some signs of political intelligence inside the democratic party.

Halle-f***in'-lujah, it's about time. Kick those motherf***ers in the teeth, tie a cinder block to their ankles and throw them off a bridge. It's long past time to snuff the sociopathic remnants of Reagan conservatism that want to destroy our country. There is no other way to deal with it; it's a malevolent virus and has to be treated as such. Good on the DNC, good on Alan Grayson; let's hope this marks a real change in the attitude of Dem leadership.

The truth is percolating to the surface - Limbaugh and his Beckian flock are inspired at the idea of American failing. They want our nation to fail!
Limbaugh and Beck are the unAmericans among us, and the 20% support they recieve is a measure of malcontent among the lesser minded small d democrats in our beloved South! To cheer the loss of the Olympic bid for one of our cities, and now to boo the decision of a Scandanavian sponsored world award is to show a hand of spitefulness, a leg of vitriol, and a head of hatred for our country! Sounds like the big fat lying slob of a man Limbaugh to me!
I hope we can get past the garbage and begin to clean up the pisspoor attitudes of the members of our nation who call themselves conservatives! -Kevo

One wonders how this differs from the oft and justly criticized "you're with us or you're against us" stance of former President Bush.
While I adamantly oppose virtually everything the Republicans stand for lately, calling them "Taliban" seems unnecessarily inflammatory and generally unhelpfully polarizing.
We progressives didn't like it when the right questioned our patriotism and said virtually the same of us.

You don't swing at every ball that comes over the net in politics. You shouldn't be passive but not everything is a partisan chew toy. The same goes for the Chris LeHanes and Mark Penns of the world. There is very little harm in conceding things that nobody REALLY cares about like a prize awarded by Scandanavian unknowns. Or Obama's kindergarten ambitions.

Maybe folks need to look at the Repub modus operandi a little differently, given the generally low knowledge and short memory of the average American voter. What may be coming across to the electorate is an image of strength, as in forcefulness, especially when compared to the Dems usually bland statements and responses.

When I read this posting by Steve, it was with absolute glee and a sense of wonder.
I was amazed that someone associated with the dumbocrat party (other than Rep. Grayson) has actually taken a vocal position pointing out the hatemongering of the rethug party and their reich wing spokesmen like Rush, Glen, Sean, et. al.
For ages I have had the impression that the official position of the dumbocratic party was that they would overcome the rethug bully by becoming more submissive. Increased submissiveness does not work to overcome school yard bullies and it does not work to overcome the bullying of the rethugs.
It is with great glee that, in recent weeks, I have observed it appears that at least some dumbs have figured this out! Now if we could just get Harry Reid to grow a spine.

Just goes to show what rank hypocrites the repigs are. "Country first", right. Support the administration or else you 'embolden the enemy', right! Total "A"-F'in-holes, yet again, those repigs. President Obama could find a cure for cancer and the repiggies would muck around in their filth and wine that he didn't really do it, he stole it, someone else was about to do it, or could have done it better. Tak'in cheap, petty shots at the President and attempting to undermine him, no matter if they take down the country in the process, that's what the current crop of 'conservapigs' are all about. We all know it, and so does the rest of the world.

The republicans are, once again trying to make hay out of this.
Problem is, they seem to have forgotten that they cut their hay eons ago and it has lain on the ground far too long, rotting and festering, and becoming food for all manner of vermin.
The bales they are offering the American people are sodden, lacking in nourishment, putrid, rank, and not fit for any creature to consume.
You cheered at the Olympic bid failure, and you poo-pooed the NPP.
Any chance you guys care about what the GLOBE might be thinking of your antics lately?

This DNC press release and the comments posted on this blog show how out of touch with reality progressives are!
A valid reaction to The Chosen One receiving the Nobel Peace Prize can be chosen from among the following:
1) It is a cynical joke!
2) For what!
3) They must have a quota system!
4) The world hates George W Bush & America!
George W. Bush has done more to promote world peace that The Chosen One has ever dreamed of accomplishing.
Some facts to help you understand this:
- The true path to peace is through war.
- Peace will be achieved when we (the United States) have imposed our will upon the world.
- When true peace is achieved, we will have one world with corporate capitalism providing the shining path.
- Complete peace will be ever lasting when we have converted all persons to Christianity (no Catholics/Mormons/Methodists need apply).
It is with obvious spite that the Scandanavian socialists have overlooked the qualified persons in George W. Bush & Richard Cheney to give this award to The Chosen One.

The previous comments only make one fact very clear to me. A large number of citizens in this country are interested only in their own little axe they are grinding on, be they Dems or Repubs. Obviously all the viroless comments come from people who have not read, and if they did could not understand where this country is headed. Democrats are generally liberal and as you look around yourselves and the world liberalism leads to socialistic programs and ultimately loss of your rights, liberty and freedom. I wonder why so many people from overseas want to come here to the US. Think about it. Do you see people standing in line to get into Libya, Iran etc. I think not. On the other hand the republicans are basically conservative by nature and beleive that each person should be free to live their lives as they see fit. Those who are wanting into the US see an opportunity for them that is not available in Mexico, Venezuela, China, Bangladesh and on and on. They know what it is like to not have any rights or freedom. So all you guys that want to bash everybody because you hate yourselves, your lives and just about anybody or thing you can think of remember the rights and freedoms you once had but squandered, by not exercising them and beleiving any body who came along and told you that if you play nice you can have every material thing you ever wanted. Oh they forgot to tell you they wanted your freedom in exchange.
Have a nice Day.

Jerry Smith you are so wrong. We lost our rights when the Patriot Act went in to effect, when were lied in to a war, when the phone company listened in on regular Americans. We are finally finding ourselves again and we're loving our country and ourselves. I would opine that you are the one with self loathing.

Do you see people standing in line to get into Libya, Iran etc. I think not.
No. But we do see them standing in very long lines to get into other democracies -- particularly those with the socialistic programs you find so scay-ree. I know it's hard to take in when you're drowning in your own sense of American exceptionalism, but the U.S. ain't the only freedom game in town.
So all you guys that want to bash everybody because you hate yourselves,
We're feeling pretty good about ourselves right now, and the world just told us we're on the right track. That really, really bugs you, doesn't it?

"A large number of citizens in this country are interested only in their own little axe they are grinding on, be they Dems or Repubs."
Are you new to the Internet ? We've seen this little shtick before. Insert both parties into the first couple of sentences, condemning them both, and then proceed to bash the Democrats and liberals through the rest of the comments. It's the typical rant from someone that votes Republican, but is too much of a wussy to admit it.
"Democrats are generally liberal and as you look around yourselves and the world liberalism leads to socialistic programs and ultimately loss of your rights, liberty and freedom."
That's a bunch of BS. State-sponsored religion and/or a lack of strong democratic institutions of government results in a loss of rights. Do you think so little of our government and Constitution and Bill of Rights that simply electing Democrats would result in the loss of these rights. Perhaps you should stop railing against organizations such as the ACLU and Planned Parenthood that stand up for these rights every day.
"On the other hand the republicans are basically conservative by nature and beleive that each person should be free to live their lives as they see fit."
Haaaaaaahhaaaaaahaaaaaaaa !!!!!!!!! This is true, if you're talking about the second amendment. The rest of our rights, not so much.
Here's a little test:
Name one right granted under our Constitution that has been curtailed one iota since the Democrats took over in January. Last time I checked, we had armed citizens standing outside of political events. Do you think that would have occurred when Bush was President ?

Atually, Jerry Smith, "Liberalism" led to the Declaration of Independence & the founding of this great nation. I'm figuring you're just trying to fan flames of stupidity for chucks and giggles, so I won't take your rant too seriously. As long as we both know you're a jackass and leave it at that...

Bush Sr ran the CIA before he was VP for 8 years and then President for 4 years.
During this time
the US built a nuclear reactor for Iran
the CIA supplied Iran with weapons
the CIA trained and funded Osama
the Pentagon supplied Iraq
Bust out your old CSPAN tapes, Reagan called Osama a "Freedom Fighter" !
Immediately after the 9/11 attacks Bush Jr grounded all planes except the Osama family and the Saudis that were allowed to leave US jurisdiction.
Then we find out the hijackers were almost all Saudis funded by Osama.
And lets not forget Prescott Bush, the grandfather was named in the Business Plot to overthrow FDR and install a fascist government in the US during the Depression and was later found guilty under the Trading with the Enemy Act during WW2 and publicly stripped of his assets only to have them quietly restored later.

Jerry,
Hmm, conservatives are for freedom and rights, you say? Dems want socialism and enslavement, you say? Hmmm. Well now, let us check a few things. Was it a repig or a Dem who recently revoked the Right of habeus corpus (look it up, repig). Was it a repig or a Dem who denied our citizens the Right To F'in Live b/c they were sent to war with NO armor on their vehicles and were wearing outdated, VIETNAM-ERA flak jackets in a 21st century battle ? And who was it again that denied us the Right to Privacy by having the NSA spy on us illegally, and then bold-face lie to the public, denying us another right, the right to be informed and hold government officials accountable? Who wrote memos to justify torture, in VIOLATION of international law, U.S. statutes, and the U.S. Constitution? That would be the repigs, on all counts. So, please, either Get a Clue, or STFU! The whole blogosphere is laughing at you, clown.

Also, GaC, Dems tend to more regulation of business practices. OK, how many average citizens - consumers, employees, etc. - feel like their "rights" to make contacts unfavorable to them, and have those enforced against them - have been chipped away? Normally a "right" is to do what you want; or for what you don't like, to be sanctioned - that conservative idea of "rights" fails for most people on both counts.

The public won't "respect" them for anything now.
These republicans have exposed themselves for what they truly are and there is no turning back for them. They still haven't apologized for the Bush yrs....they cannot admit to failure of any kind.
They have degenerated to the kind that would dig the gold out of a dead man's teeth and steal his boots in front of his children.
They've been building up to this for years so take a good look... they have exposed themselves as anti-American and pro party only. America's trash with money and title but no integrity or ideals. They have abused every privilege America had to offer.
They are beyond earning anyone's respect except those just like them. They offer nothing. They have brought America and Democracy to its darkest period and must be excluded if we are to have our nation back again. Their participation will guarantee that all is lost to a fascist corporatocracy. They have been exposed.

"We progressives didn't like it when the right questioned our patriotism and said virtually the same of us."
That's a fair point. I think this is a bit different for two reasons:
1) In this case, the DNC is targetting the Republican party. It's not suggesting that all conservatives are unpatriotic.
2) Members of the conservative movement have been lying about what liberals believe for years. The DNC's assertion that, "The 2009 version of the Republican Party...will put politics above patriotism at every turn," is harsh, but I can't think of a counter-example.
