QUOTE OF THE DAY.... There have been some pretty extraordinary responses to President Obama being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, some encouraging, some less so. And in general, the reactions from many of the White House's right-wing detractors have been disheartening.

It's tough to pick just one -- indeed, the day is far from over and there's plenty of nonsense yet to be aired. After all, Beck's and Hannity's cable shows won't start for hours.

Beck did, however, have a strong entry for Quote of the Day, telling his radio audience that the Nobel Peace Prize "should be give to the Tea Party goers and the 9-12 Project." As Beck sees it, progressives thought the right wouldn't contest the Democratic agenda -- they did? -- so the far-right protestors deserve credit for ... something. It wasn't entirely clear.

But barring any late entries, Rush Limbaugh's Quote of the Day will be tough to forget. "I think that everybody is laughing. Our president is a world-wide joke," the radio host said. "Folks, do you realize something has happened here that we all agree with the Taliban and Iran about and that is he doesn't deserve the award. Now that's hilarious, that I'm on the same side of something with the Taliban, and that we all are on the same side as the Taliban."

Well, Rush, not all of us.

It's been quite a strange year in this regard. In February, Rep. Pete Sessions (R) of Texas, chairman of the Republican Congressional Committee, said he'd like to see his party emulate the Taliban and possibly "become an insurgency."

And now Limbaugh thinks it's hilarious that he, the Taliban, and the Ahmadinejad regime are all criticizing the U.S. president in the same way.

Excuse me but can you please get your bloody facts straight and not just accept what that wanker Limbaugh says as the truth! Even the Iranians are being positive:

"We hope that this gives him the incentive to walk in the path of bringing justice to the world order," said Ali Akbar Javanfekr, Ahmadinejad's media aide.

"We are not upset and we hope that by receiving this prize he will start taking practical steps to remove injustice in the world."

Limbaugh and his ilk have *always* been on the side of the Taliban. Were it not for the Taliban "threat", the fear-mongering that GWB and yakking heads like Limbaugh perpetuated would not have resulted in EIGHT YEARS of Bushie.

The only ones who will be fooled by Limbaughs words are his choir, who still long for the good old days when women couldn't wear pants, much less vote, and white men had an unquestioned air of superiority.

True intellectual courage would be to admit that Rush is right about this. Obama winning the prize for doing nothing is a joke. It's indefensible.

I'm sure I'll get called a dittohead, which is laughable, but the honest truth is that jackasses are not always wrong.

Of course, W was world-wide joke as well and I doubt we'll here Rush mention that.

It's been obvious for years that the reichwing of this country have more in common with the taliban and the "islamofascists" than they do with normal Americans.
Hating "freedom" and "democracy" -- check.
Loathing and oppressing women -- check.
Subjugating everything in life to service to God -- and of course his self-selected representatives on Earth -- check.
Only way to engage the world is military might, including the slaughter of civilians, and unprovoked aggression -- check, check, check.
The only news here is that they're willing to admit it out loud. Any honesty at all from these people is unexpected, but such frankness on so fundamental an issue is unique.
I'm sure that by tomorrow they'll be back to pretending to oppose the islamists.

Ummm....hmm.

How do I say it?

Ummm...I don't think Obama deserved a Nobel Peace Prize.

I'm not mad at Obama for this...it's not like this is his doing. I wouldn't be surprised if he's somewhat embarassed by this whole thing himself.

But does this mean I'm siding with Rush and the Taliban because I don't think he deserved it? How important is this entire discussion? It's like saying "I think Sean Penn shouldn't have won Best Actor this year, and that Mickey Rourke got screwed". Is it even possible to hold on an opinion on this without someone saying that they have a political axe to grind.

Is there no middle ground on this?

The whole thing is just stupid. And I'm kind of put off that Steve Benen needs to jump into the fray here just to fend off idiocy.

These people not only agree with Taliban more than is seemly, they envy Taliban its (their?) freedoms -- to keep the women in the kitchen, pregnant and silent and stone them (or throw acid if their faces) if they "get out of line" or "forget their place" in any other way... To kill everyone (esp gays), whenever the spirit moves them. To sow fear... So it's not surprising that they actually give public vent to those wishes.

I only just heard about an hour ago (stint at the Free Clinic, where we, carefully, do not mention politics) and my first thought was: oh, goodie, the fRightwing is gonna have a cow and die of collective apoplexy. Wishing to be Taliban is, comparatively, weak tea.

Chico. @ 14:54

Nobel Peace Prize has always been given to someone who deserves it but, *also* as a finger to the warmongers and oppressors. Nothing new here. If Walesa -- who was about as smart and literate and lucid as W -- could get it, Obama deserves it a hundred times more (at least)

Remember this is all about Limbaugh's paycheck. He signed the big contract and he has to deliver the goods. This isn't about politics or ideology with him...it's his racket. He plays to an ugly, mean-spirited, rancorous audience. They're his meal ticket.

I think far more disturbing is the REpublican Party surrendering to the same crowd. They've become a cult party. As this behavior escalates they'll become more and more marginalized. They're loud and shrill responce to the Nobel Prize embarrasses most Americans, no doubt. But their behavior is becoming increasingly threatening and dangerous:

I feel that the Nobel committee gave the peace prize the the American voters and supporters of Barack Obama. The rejection of the Bush/Republican agenda has ushered a new era of peace and cooperation to the world.
Rush and the other-worlders know that it was a slap at their twisted worldview, and they are too immature to be gracious about a fellow American winning perhaps the most prestigious award in the world.
Stay classy, Ditto-heads.
That last line was sarcastic. I mention that in case any true ditto-heads, Becker-heads, or Hannity-Hacks happen to read it.

I've been meaning to ask someone who would know, are there actually female Dittoheads? Limbaugh is so disdainful of women (even his latest name-calling re. Scarborough, "chickified," which I suppose a person could pretend was purely about baby birds). It's hard to understand how a woman could listen to him and not hate herself. Maybe everyone who listens to him hates themselves? He strikes me as someone literally dripping the sweat of self-loathing.

Dear God, yes. Yes there are. And I wish I could say I didn't know that was true.

I agree with you that there shouldn't be, but the right-wing capacity for cognitive dissonance and rationalization is infinite.

Posted by: DH Walker on October 9, 2009 at 3:55 PM | PERMALINK

When you think about it, the Peace Prize is really about one man's atonement for becoming rich "by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before." Defusing the bomb Bush dropped in the Middle East is going to be a long, gritty, ugly, deadly process. There's a whole lot of scary wires to cut.

Maybe the Prize is the wire cutters. Maybe they've been put in the best hands possible. Young hands that, with any luck, will be working for a long time. I'm as impatient for peace as the next guy. But we've seen the misery and destruction that a lack of patience can bring.

And I can't shake the feeling that we've got a lot to atone for ourselves.

To use typical Drudge-LimBecknnity logic against them: the stock market is up today! So the Nobel Committee knew what it was doing:

"US Stocks Advance as Dow Climbs Above Highest Close in Year "

Dow
9,859.95 +73.08 (0.75%)
S&P 500
1,071.47 +5.99 (0.56%)
Nasdaq
2,139.28 +15.35 (0.72%)

Sure there is. But is "middle ground" what you're really seeing from the right on this?

It's one thing to think this is a little premature, while at the same time understanding the committee's reasoning. This is my position (and I worked on the Obama 08 campaign).

Embracing the Taliban and Hamas as newly-found fellow travelers as a result of batshit-irrational Obama hatred, like Limbaugh is doing, is extreme, and worth all the scorn it earns.

We still (more precisely, YOU all) pay way too much attention to what the right wing says or (ahem) thinks -- more precisely, gets told to think.

But there is something politically dangerous in this one. It sets the President up to fail more than it helps him to succeed.

It's sorta like giving your Employee of the Week award on Monday afternoon. For one thing, it's just odd on the face of it.

For another -- if the award is just a more or less a star on your forehead sort of thing, AT BEST, it does no harm to encourage cooperation by letting all the other employees know that the only way you can get similar recognition is by working and playing well with, you know, the guy we already recognized.

But if there is some sort of tangible benefit with the Employee of the Week award, giving it so early removes an incentive for everybody who can't get it that week.

I understand the Nobel committee's idea (and don't forget, this probably had more to do with Jimmy Carter's efforts than anybody else -- one way you win a Nobel prize is with the recommendations of previous winners from your own country: not a long list) that Obama's will be an aspirational prize -- to help with all the good work he's going to do.

But I don't quite see how it will help. It raises expectations everywhere without giving him leverage anywhere. Is the Taliban going to be more cooperative, now that he's been certified by Stockholm? Iran? North Korea? Israel, the Palestinians?

It also gives all of his political opponents in the US a foreign flag to put on the clubs they're going to use to beat on him... "like a lifetime achievement Oscar for a child star", that sorta thing.

It does not help an American President in his first term to have the great trophy of being more popular abroad than he is at home up on his mantle.

Personally, I hope Obama goes to Stockholm, and tells them to hold onto it awhile: "I'll be back when I have something to show for it."

Posted by: theAmericanist on October 9, 2009 at 4:33 PM | PERMALINK

Well, I think everybody is shocked by it. But, its their award.

I am sympathetic to the reasoning that the most powerful country in the world was led by warmongers. Yes, you! Mr. War Time President and you, Mr. "Bin Laden! pfft! I got my eye trained on Russia".

So, Obama's greatest accomplishment, running a superb campaign, winning, and thus putting the world at ease somewhat, if not completely at peace, deserves some recognition. One of the many reasons I couldn't wait for W to leave was the anxiety caused by the fear that he'd start a nucular holocaust just to prove how tough he was.

It is a great decision and Obama absolutely should accept it. In addition to pissing off the Right it has revealed the Left’s congenital inability to think strategically into the future further than 10 minutes. The point is how do we get to a better world. It starts with rhetoric that reaches into the heart, and lots of it. The ancient world knew this. The Nobel Committee has chosen to shift in some years from awarding accomplished peacemakers to setting up the rhetorical means for making it happen. There’s a good deal of danger in that, for the Committee—and they have also made it hard for Obama in some immediate ways, such as in his Afghanistan policy. But this ups Obama’s hand in dealing with the leadership in Mideast countries where their publics have aspirations for peace and they can use the Nobel to vocalize it in a way which isn’t dangerous to them from their own governments. Obama can also use the acceptance speech to talk to people more generally, and if he is to become a true world leader, which is what we need, this is the way to go. I am heartened by the fact that the Nobel Committee has some grasp of what the world needs, and is willing to place a bet. Only in the West do we think that things can be changed just by getting elected—it’s insane. The work merely begins, then. Good leaders can’t do it in a vacuum (and this is pretty much what the U.S. Left provides, in any practical sense.) I have begun to wonder whether Obama’s biggest problem—the virulent Right being stupid and despicable clowns—isn’t really the cynics in his own party. If he doesn’t get all the help he can, then how stupid is everybody, anyhow?

There has always been this kind of thuggery in America, but it has not, in recent times, been either this organized or widespread. The rebublican base has been building the infrastructure that sustains this (pundits, think tanks, newspapers, radio talk shows, Fox news, colleges) since the 1980s. It is nice to think that democrats can respond to this by taking the high road, but I think it is increasingly obvious that this approach does not work in circumstances like these. Like it or not, a good part of the population of this country agree with Beck,Hannity and Limbaugh. It is hard to admit that thirty to thirty-five percent of our fellow Americans wallow in ignorance, fear and hatred, and that there is nothing you can say or do that will change this. I think we all have to have the courage to call these people out. Standing up to a malignant mountain of shite like Limbaugh (I wish I had my Irish ancestors' gift for profanity) is good start.
