FRIDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* Pakistan: "A huge and lethal blast rocked a crowded market in the northwestern city of Peshawar on Friday in what appeared to be a warning against the government's plans to launch a military offensive against militants in the frontier region of South Waziristan. Hospital officials said at least 49 people had been killed, including seven children and one woman. About 100 people were wounded, they said."

* Eliminating the Taliban isn't an option. Weakening it is.

* You know what the president thought the big story of the day would be? His proposal for a Consumer Financial Protection Agency. The White House was ready for a big push, too, right up until that Nobel committee made its surprise announcement.

* The Nobel Peace Prize comes with about $1.4 million. The president will donate all of it to charity.

* Elected GOP officials had very little to say about the president's Nobel. Their media allies, however, couldn't help themselves.

* NASA successfully hit Earth's moon really hard.

* Exciting trade deficit news.

* Another Republican for Reform: Thomas Scully, who ran the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) during George W. Bush's first term.

* U.S. Chamber of Commerce is losing friends, but it's not giving up on its absurd position on global warming.

* Eugene Robinson thinks it's time for congressional Dems to take a good, long look at Charlie Rangel.

* Good to see Krugman weigh in on higher ed policy.

* Conor Freidersdorf asks some County Republican Party leaders and officers for their thoughts on the future of the GOP. Hilarity ensues.

* Glenn Beck is now criticizing former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright because he finds her "neck skin" unattractive. What a classy guy.

* Rush Limbaugh has expressed an interest in buying the National Football League's St. Louis Rams franchise. Plenty of African-American players have said they wouldn't play for a Limbaugh-owned team.

* On a related note, Limbaugh yesterday blasted MSNBC's Joe Scarborough as a "neutered chickified moderate." This morning, Scarborough responded, explaining that Limbaugh put his "testicles in a blind trust" for George W. Bush.

* Right-wing activist Floyd Brown, once described as "a slimy thug for hire," is behind the drive to impeach President Obama.

* A.L. asked the question of the day: "Did you ever think you'd see a headline 'President on defensive after winning Nobel Peace Prize'?" It didn't quite get there today, but it was close.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

Poignant paragraphs of the week...

In First Lady’s Roots, a Complex Path From Slavery

In 1850, the elderly master of a South Carolina estate took pen in hand and painstakingly divided up his possessions. Among the spinning wheels, scythes, tablecloths and cattle that he bequeathed to his far-flung heirs was a 6-year-old slave girl valued soon afterward at $475.

President Obama’s Nobel Reaction
Well, this is not how I expected to wake up this morning. After I received the news, Malia walked in and said, "Daddy, you won the Nobel Peace Prize, and it is Bo's birthday." And then Sasha added, "Plus, we have a three-day weekend coming up." So it's -- it's good to have kids to keep things in perspective.

Two comments:

1. Glenn Beck doesn't think HIS neck will look like that too if he manages to live as long as Madeleine Albright? Oh right. He's such a narcissist that he'll probably head in for some nip/tuck instead.

2. The little feud between Rush and Joe is starting to get good and I can't wait till next week to see where it goes from here!

As I said on an earlier thread, it is also John Lennon's 69th. Happy Birthday, John. IMAGINE!

The wingers have their panties in a knot over our Nobel Prize winning president, yet their infallible king was a failure of "nuculer" purportions.

Anyone seen Outrage? I caught it last night; riveting!
How many more wingers will be outed or thrown from the closet?

Equal rights for ALL!!

Regarding President Obama winning such a noble prize:
I was thinking today that George W. Bush probably regrets his personal allegience to the Neocons, and how former treasury secretary Paul O'Neill said "from the very beginning there was a conviction that Saddam Hussein was a bad person and needed to go. Going after Saddam was topic "A" ten days after the inauguration..."
The Bush administration lied about the supposed weapons of mass destruction, and so many have died, both the citizens of Iraq, and U.S. and coalition soldiers.
Really sad the world had to endure such a war mongerer as George W. Bush.

Rush Limbaugh has expressed an interest in buying the National Football League's St. Louis Rams franchise. Plenty of African-American players have said they wouldn't play for a Limbaugh-owned team.

Limpdick would fire them anyway - he wants to prove that white boys all by their lonesome can be an awesome team, just like they were when his daddy was a football fan.

... unbridled horse race to Fabian socialism ...

I believe that's an oxymoron. Or, given the source, any oxymoran.

"Eliminating the Taliban isn't an option. Weakening it is."

A weakening of necessity versus a weakening of choice?

AfPak withdrawal is inevitable. The timeline is contingent upon American politics only, and perhaps the narcissism of the President -- which has just been elevated several orders of magnitude by the Nobel for, as SatNightLive says, "accomplishing nothing."

MacChrystal is on a fools errand. The President has no intention of continuing the fight, much less increase US forces. We will be out by 2011 in time for the campaign regardless of the situation on the ground in Afghanistan.

Mr. Obama's statements or any policy he pitches in his permanent campaign have an expiration date, usually sooner rather than later.

The de-stabilization he will create in the AfPak region will in time midwife conflicts (Pakistan has the world's 2nd largest Shiite population after Iran; the Taliban is Sunni; do the damn math) that will make the juvenile, insolent, and strangely hopeful Euro-American Left wish for the small wars of the Bush years.

* NASA successfully hit Earth's moon really hard. -- Steve Benen

Doubtless, the official line is that the water from the Moon will pay both for the occupation and the reconstruction, without discommoding the taxpayers in the slightest.

So...Limbaugh reminds me of a dead chicken left out in the sun too long.

Biojetfuel for USAF.

Just another small step forward. that much aviation fuel doesn't provide for a lot of flight time, by USAF standards, but it is worth noting.

Next up: salt-tolerant camellina.

Limbaugh just wants that NFL team so he'll have easy access to painkillers.

Conor Freidersdorf asks some County Republican Party leaders and officers for their thoughts on the future of the GOP. Hilarity ensues.

I read the linked page and I'm damned if I can find any hilarity there. It was pathetic and sad.

The Republican party is pathetic and sad. Where is the public outrage against a political party so blatantly bent on tearing down this country?

How is this "loyal opposition"?

How much you want to bet no one asks McCain what happened to "country first" when he makes yet another appearance on a Sunday chat show this week.

Rush Limbaugh, the NFL's Marge Schott.

The testicles in a blind trust is a literary allusion to what G.H.W.Bush, according to Garry Trudeau, did in 1980. I wonder if Scarborough knew that.

I think I will give the Sunday talk shows a miss tomorrow; it will be all about Obama's "narcissism", and how the award will actually hurt him.

Posted by: bob h on October 10, 2009 at 7:11 AM | PERMALINK

With all this talk about 'Obama does not deserve' from all the GOP, I for one am delighted that he has made peace with Europe, remember all the freedom fries, the old Europe, the pouring French wine down the drain, Americans were traveling Europe in Sweat shirts that said 'Canada' they were so ashamed.Sarkozy said it best when he said 'America has come back to the hearts of the world'

"neutered chickified moderate."

Why does Rush hate chicks?

He coined the term 'feminazis'.

He seems to like football players.

Coincidence?

I heard today that the Israelis called Mitchell's most recent meeting constructive. This means that either he has converted to judaism or he gives great head. Which was it ?
