RUSH'S REPUTATION PRECEDES HIM.... Last week, Rush Limbaugh indicated his interest in becoming a co-owner of the NFL's St. Louis Rams franchise. Almost immediately, some African-American players, aware of the right-wing radio host's remarks on race, said they would not play for a team associated with the scandal-plagued personality.

Apparently, the concerns are widespread.

According to ESPN, the executive director of the NFL players union has written an email to the association's executive committee, detailing his opposition to any purchase of the St. Louis Rams football team by Rush Limbaugh.

NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith wrote, "I've spoken to the Commissioner [Roger Goodell] and I understand that this ownership consideration is in the early stages. But sport in America is at its best when it unifies, gives all of us reason to cheer, and when it transcends. Our sport does exactly that when it overcomes division and rejects discrimination and hatred."

Psst, Rush, I think he's talking about you.

Limbaugh, a Missouri native, is part of a team of bidders, and there are six groups vying for the chance to purchase the team. The NFL players' union has no formal role in approving potential buyers, but Smith nevertheless wanted to signal "what we stand for."

Limbaugh's previous association with professional football was a 2003 gig on ESPN, which ended after controversial remarks about race.

Football players aren't as dumb as they're cracked up to be. . .

Poor Rush - he was the one growing up who was picked last for any neighborhood pick-up game. Others saw him as a weak player, or someone who was just a plain old poor sport. Well, old Rush is coming home to roost - in a house he is not welcome! Looks like Rush will be the last yet again to be allowed to play with the neighbor kids! -Kevo

From the desk of Rush Limbaugh:

It is a sickening and sad state of affairs when these uppitty black football players start to believe that they can dictate anything to a rich white man!

When I take over ownership of the St. Louis pro football team, I will insure that all employees (including the jocks) understand that they are just more corporate employees who must toe the line or get fired. Also, I will change the team name to a more appropriate name - The St. Louis WhiteSkins.

Wow. Considering what Rush is worth he must be PISSED. (In 2008 he got an 8-year contract for $400 million- he makes a minimum of $50 million a year.) Apparently no amount of money can make up for the fact that he's a racist, hateful demagogue.

Just watch, Rush is going to say that he's being denied his freedom as a capitalist, is being oppressed by blacks and having his 1st amendment rights taken away-- and that it's all Obama's fault.

Rush has freely expressed his racism. Given that, I see no place for him where he could harm the lives and livelihoods of those he does not respect. You are free to express racism in this country, but there should be consequences. At its root, racism is all about an illegal denial of opportunity for a whole category of Americans. Pesky thing, reality. Purveyors of racism should not be rewarded.

I suspected Rush's bid was going nowhere anyway, but this pretty well seals it. If there's one thing the NFL tries to avoid if at all possible, it's controversy.

Fumble, pile on boys!

I wonder how ConservaBible is going to translate Hosea 8:7?

For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk; the bud shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow it up.

Note that, according to Politico, Al Sharpton is jumping into the fray. Popcorn, anyone?

Posted by: MattF on October 12, 2009 at 1:13 PM | PERMALINK

Well then, maybe he can buy the Miss America Pagent.

Posted by: SaintZak on October 12, 2009 at 1:14 PM | PERMALINK

I was blown away that Rush would even try this, considering his remarks about McNabb*, and his recent calls for segregation. St. Louis has a large black population, and something like 70% of football players are black. This couldn't be a worse fit for Mr. Racism Limbaugh.

*Did you see that game yesterday? Suck it, Rush!

Posted by: Personal Failure on October 12, 2009 at 1:14 PM | PERMALINK

And you thought the St. Louis Rams sucked now. Just wait if Rush had his way and went back to "whites only" rosters a la George Preston Marshall (Redskins).

folks, it's all apple pie...

As I don't know or care about football, I'll defer to Keith Olbermann who said something along the lines of " If football owners had to be moral, there wouldn't be any."

Posted by: martin on October 12, 2009 at 1:26 PM | PERMALINK

In my previous comment I forgot to include my contempt for Rush. A VERY significant part of success is tapping into racist anger.

Posted by: Dan on October 12, 2009 at 1:27 PM | PERMALINK

Well I wouldn't start cheering yet, owners decided who can purchase a team, not Goodell. There are 32 teams, so he basically needs 16 votes, I don't believe the current owners can vote.

These are really wealthy men, except for 1, who got herself in a bunch of trouble of some racist comments. I suspect most of those guys are hardcore republicans that might not listen to Rush, but definitely be sympathetic to his cause. While some probably listen to him every day.

Players talk, but if it comes down to making another million or two, they will be on his team ASAP. That is the league, no one has any sort of loyalty, they go where the cash is. Which is fine, but I wish they would drop the whole 'we got principles' non-sense.

I missed this angle when first I heard that little Rusty wanted to play in the real world. Rich folks can do anything they want, right? Well, I am sure that this reaction will puzzle him, as his little bubble is pierced by reality.

However, this is not similar to what happened to George Soros. No, this time the Republicans in Congress are quiet. IOKIYAR anyone?

I never said you boys couldn't play football! I just said you can't be my quarterback! Typical African Americans -- overreacting all over the place.

Posted by: Rush on October 12, 2009 at 1:46 PM | PERMALINK

Ahh, nobody's wants the rich, fat, drug addict on the football team...

I'm sure the other owners will let him play, because there's laws protecting the rights of rich, fat, drug addicts.

Its perfect for Limbaugh. Maybe he thinks he can run it like the plantation he could never have.

Posted by: calipygian on October 12, 2009 at 1:50 PM | PERMALINK

Rush won't be approved as an owner. The NFL does screen owners ... for example, the NFL has for years black-balled Donald Trump, who was the main reason they refused to merge with the USFL. Sometimes idiots get through (see: Snyder, Dan), but that's because their idiocy wasn't evident in advance.

Various NFL reporters (including Peter King in his Monday column today) are suggesting that NFL higher ups are very cool to a Rush bid.

Nevertheless, it would be kind of cool to see him field and all-white team -- which is pretty much what he'd be stuck with. They are probably the worst team in the NFL this year. If Rush buys them Ram fans should get used to that position.

Posted by: ZH on October 12, 2009 at 1:53 PM | PERMALINK

Rush will establish the Un-Negro Leagues.

50 Million a year for Rush? Geez, no wonder Beck went from shock jock to shlock jock.

Posted by: Dale on October 12, 2009 at 2:05 PM | PERMALINK

If Rush wants the Rams then Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton get to own the Dallas Cowboys. Deal?

Posted by: trex on October 12, 2009 at 2:08 PM | PERMALINK

Uh, don't bet against Rush just yet: Of the 32 owners, only ONE backed Obama in '08.

Posted by: DAY on October 12, 2009 at 2:10 PM | PERMALINK

Do they have random drug testing for owners as well as players?

Just askin'...

Posted by: Mustang Bobby on October 12, 2009 at 2:24 PM | PERMALINK

DAY @ 2:10pm, the NFL isn't Fox News. Political leanings aren't the thing that matters. Democrats like the NFL too and the owners know that.

Will the owners really be happy with a situation where every stupid thing that comes out of Rush's mouth is tied to the NFL? It's doubtful. It's really doubtful.

Posted by: Joshua on October 12, 2009 at 2:27 PM | PERMALINK

So he'll field an all white team, and when they get crushed by the rest of the league he'll say, "This is Obama's America: a bunch of white guys getting clobbered by a bunch of black guys while tens of thousands look on and cheer."

Posted by: ibid on October 12, 2009 at 2:30 PM | PERMALINK

First, a lot of football players are politically and a lot will turn out to be Limbaugh fans. Coaches too. I wouldn't worry about their ability to field a team. And if he's willing to put up the money to sign free agents, that will speak louder to them than Rush's on air rants.

Second, what was really telling about Rush's comments with ESPN wasn't that they were racist -- they were meant as media bashing, not African American-bashing -- but that they were bad football analysis. He was saying the media pumped up McNabb because wanted a black quarterback to succeed. Nobody talks about "black quarterbacks" anymore becauase they're unremarkable. Doub Williams won a Super Bowl in the 80s, what, 15 years before Limbaugh shot his mouth off. The NFL has black QBs all over the place. Nobody but Limbaugh seems to even notice them anymore.

Third, he wouldn't be the first clueless, racist owner. He might actually learn something if he had to pay players -- black and white -- millions of dollars and learn about what spells success and failure in the league. It ain't race. For every Payton Manning there's a Ryan Leaf. For every JaMarcus Russell there's a Steve McNair.

Last week, Rush Limbaugh indicated his interest in becoming a co-owner of the NFL's St. Louis Rams franchise.

Just wanted to add that as every long-time STL sports fan know, STL does not currently have a NLF team.

Posted by: Disputo on October 12, 2009 at 5:01 PM | PERMALINK

There is no way Limbaugh will be allowed by the NFL to be a majority owner of a NFL team. It wouldn't just effect the St. Louis Rams's image, but the NFL brand image..

Limbaugh is a racist. He has said so many outrageous and overtly hateful and racist things throughout the years. He has tried to cover it up with some excuse that he is being "honest" or "upfront". To say some ignorant thing like slavery wasn't bad in the South, or making blatantly racist remarks about African Americans, will not wash with the NFL, where 70% of the players are African American.

Limbaugh makes his money by being confrontational. He will continue to be confrontational, and the NFL will have some huge PR headaches if Limbaugh owns a team and continues with his obnoxious political views..

He is not going to be an owner, mainly because he has said way too many racist things in the near past, and he continues to be spew hatred.

Posted by: Ted on October 12, 2009 at 11:59 PM | PERMALINK

So how is denying Limbaugh the right to own and operate an entertainment activity simply not racist???

Posted by: t on October 13, 2009 at 11:07 AM | PERMALINK

Rush would be good for football. The guy is very knowledgeable and has the money to buy the team. So let him do it!

Posted by: Women Veterans on October 13, 2009 at 6:38 PM | PERMALINK

No one is really a fan of Rush especially in one of the most integrated American pastimes.
