POTTY MOUTHS.... Politico had an interesting item today on politics and profanity. I'm just not sure if I agree with the premise.
President Barack Obama called rap star Kanye West "a jackass." Vice President Joe Biden told a senator to "Gimme a f---ing break!" Economic adviser Christina Romer declared that Americans had yet to have their "holy s---" moment over the economy.
Those who pay attention to political rhetoric say an unusual amount of profanity has emanated from this White House -- even without counting famously colorful White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel. But before this statement becomes fodder for yet another partisan debate (with conservatives saying Obama is disgracing the presidency, and liberals that the media are once again being unfair), they quickly add that Team Obama is no crasser than administrations past. It's just that they are being quoted more accurately.
What's different, according to linguists, media analysts and reporters who've covered past administrations is the media: Networks and newspapers have become far more willing to run with quotes, video and audio of political figures and their aides saying things that never used to be repeated. They attribute the growth of the political potty mouth alternately to the proliferation of recording technologies; intense interest in all things Obama; the explosion of new media platforms that both circumvent and push traditional media while sharpening competition; a general coarsening of the public dialogue; or some combination of all of those factors.
There's probably something to this, but it occurs to me coverage of, shall we say, "salty" language from the Bush era was also fairly common. The Politico piece notes George W. Bush, for example, referred to a journalist as a "major league asshole," though he didn't realize his comment would be picked up by a microphone.
But there are plenty of other examples that weren't mentioned. When Bush decided to launch the war in Iraq, the then-president proclaimed, "F**k Saddam, we're taking him out." Two years later, Bush was overheard chatting about Hezbollah with British Prime Minister Tony Blair when the U.S. president said, "See the irony is what they need to do is get Syria to get Hezbollah to stop doing this sh*t and it's over." The quote, which didn't really make any sense substantively, was broadcast quite a bit.
Similarly, when Dick Cheney ran into Pat Leahy on the Senate floor for a friendly gathering in 2004, the then-VP said, "Go f**k yourself." John McCain is known for constantly cursing out his colleagues, and last year, discussing immigration policy, McCain screamed at Sen. John Cornyn, saying "F**k you! This is chickens**t stuff." All of these quotes received at least some media attention.
Part of this, of course, is a reminder that politicians are hardly unique -- regular ol' folks tend to use language in everyday life that the FCC wouldn't approve of. The typical American probably doesn't scream at colleagues as much as John McCain does, but they do slip into PG13 territory with some regularity.
And if the point of the Politico piece is note that in previous generations, the media simply didn't acknowledge or report on profanities/vulgarities, that's certainly true. But I don't think the media culture shifted recently -- it seemed to happen during the Bush era.

Liberals wallow in profanity. You guys have no idea how this sounds to people raised in more civil circumstances.
I had a guy screaming at me the other day about how the war I happen to have supported has killed at least a hundred thousand people. I told him at least we didn't use four-letter words while invading. He was speechless. I won that round.

Politico:"...with conservatives saying Obama is disgracing the presidency, and liberals that the media are once again being unfair."
Nice psuedo-subliminal message that Politico is putting out there; i.e., as if 'conservatives saying Obama is disgracing the presidency' is something uncommon or even rare, and that 'liberals once again [saying that the media are] being unfair' is just some liberal hippy fantasy, far from the truth.
The Politico is the Fox News of the internet.

We all use profanity from time to time: specific words are not the enemy.
It's the overall intent behind them that matters: the function they serve and the context they are spoken in..
Much too much attention/value given to literal meanings here.
Yes, cable and too much time on our hands just makes us look for trouble/blame where there is none.

Thank you, hells littlest. "Jackass" is not profanity, though somehow it's been transformed, telephone-game style, into "a**hole."

As terraformer pointed out, can anybody find this mysterious liberal that is overly concerned about the media reporting on profanity from the Obama administration? Somehow I missed it.

" . . . it seemed to happen during the Bush era."
Tucker Carlson's 1999 article on GWB for Talk magazine may have been a turning point.

"Jackass" was used by Jiminy Cricket in Disney's Pinocchio. A G-rated movie from 1940. Give me a break.

Politico is teh stupid.
I know lots of political types. They all curse. All of them.
Of course I do too, so I don't mind it.

McCain calling his wife a "c*nt" seems rather obscene, but it was not a political statement, so I guess that is alright.

Sanitizing the words of the elite has been going on for a long time. When Ford became president in 1974, it was widely recalled in the press that Lyndon Johnson once said Ford was so dumb he couldn't walk and chew gum at the same time. While what he actually said involved the word fart.

Shorter Politico -
"Damn, the Republican base are really letting their inner-racist loose on You-Tube and Blogs. I think we'd better run a piece on how the Democrats are worse."
Did I miss anything?

So, which will it be? Is The Politico channeling Aunt Pitty of Gone With the Wind asking Prissy to fetch their smelling salts, or are they the equivalent of Capt. Louis Reynaud in Casablanca, and thus shocked, shocked to find out that adults actually use four-letter words and salty language.
Fuck such faux sensitivity. As Tip O'Neill was fond of saying, politics ain't beanbag. That sort of bullshit is for fuckin' pussies - and I don't pay attention to fuckin' pussies.

Pleeeezzze.
A Jack Ass is a maledDonkey, which is fairly appropriate given Kanye's behavior. Female donkeys are Jenny's, though the term is not commonly used. Both come from the Donkey's latin name Equus africanus asinus (or sometimes Equus asinus
asinus). Either way, it's not even close to Cheney dropping the F-bomb, or even a scatological reference like A**hole.
It's simply politics. Republicans who are "shocked, shocked to find that.." the President used such language should just get a grip.

Jackass is so profane that a mainstream movie shares the name.
Can't remember a movie called "Fuck You" or "Major League Asshole"
This is same ole, same ole, lumping all of it together as equal. When in fact some curses are fairly mundane, like the one you hear on Network TV aster 10, and some would get you thrown in jail.
Posted by: ScottW on October 12, 2009 at 4:44 PM | PERMALINK
Um, hello ? Nixon tapes, anyone ? He may not have said "fuck", but everything he said was a hell of a lot more profane in every sense of the word.

Anyone (esp from Politico) can tell me what the job of Vice President isn't worth a bucket of? And how old *that* phrase is?
Oh, and to keep the White House's discourse on a properly elevated level, Obama should have said "jack rabbit", not "jackass", of course. Sigh. Y'all (Americans) didn't do the English language any favours, when you eliminated "arse" from your vocabulary and replaced it with a more ambiguous "ass" (aka "donkey").
Posted by: exlibra on October 12, 2009 at 4:54 PM | PERMALINK
You may be too young to remember, but once president Truman said a word (probably damn) and then Nixon, then running for vice president, piously told the world that no real president would talk like that. Of course, hearing his own tapes, one now knows how Nixon himself talked in the white house while president.
Posted by: josephus on October 12, 2009 at 5:04 PM | PERMALINK
It's also worth noting that "jackass" isn't generally considered profanity. Something that is profane is an affront to God. Jackass is no more profane than calling someone a skunk or a clown.

The ignorance of American political history evident in this piece reveals its author/authors as simply too dirt ignorant of the subject matter to be political journalists.
Which is probably why Politico hired him/her/them.
Somewhere, LBJ is sneering "Cussing! Obama? I'd show those *&$%@#$! REAL cursing!
Posted by: JMG on October 12, 2009 at 5:27 PM | PERMALINK
Journalists can't write a story that says, "nothing has changed".
So they pretend to see trends, and they are better if they reinforce an already established media narrative. Coarsening of society, perfidy of Democrats, threat of Muslims, that kinda thing.
Good thing our society is intelligent enough to keep the media's malarkey in perspective. Or else someone might get hurt.
Posted by: flubber on October 12, 2009 at 5:31 PM | PERMALINK
I think it also has something to do with the fact that use of profanity has become more and more common in general in our culture.
The days when kids got their mouth washed out with soap for swearing are long since past...spend a few minutes in the hallway of any middle school or high school and you'll hear more swear words than you can count.
It's just not considered to be that big of a deal any more...

I'm too young to personally remember either of the stories, but I like this one even better: During one of their TV debates, Nixon chided Kennedy for the salty language Kennedy was reputed to sometimes use and that Truman regularly used. Kennedy just laughed the way the cool kid laughs at the officious dorky kid. The second the cameras were off, Nixon hissed, "That fucking bastard -- he wasn't supposed to be using notes!"

Terraformer’s words make sense to me
This is their counter action to yesterday’s article in the NYT Obama Becomes Japan’s English Teacher.
Somehow, this must have been the first time they have become aware that educators and children all over the world have been inspired to incorporate President Barack Hussein Obama in the classroom.
That article probably spurred them to poke around a bit on the web and they now know there are many ‘lesson plans’ about this president of the United States and realize they have no control over schools elsewhere so they came up with this psuedo-subliminal article to disgrace him - the rest is a distraction!
------------
Here's a video clip from CNN reporting that there's an English learning book and CD set based on Barack Obama's speeches and inaugural address. Apparently it's selling well. It's the #1 best-selling book on Japan's version of Amazon: http://howtoteachenglishonline.com/obama_english.htm
Educator's Guide to Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope
Study the life of Barack Obama with the resources in this literature guide to Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope, a biography of the 44th President of the United States. The Politico is a right wing organization financed by a Republican family as part of a specific right wing agenda.
Where's the video of Republican George Bush literally flipping off the camera?
Where's mention of Republican Nixon's foul language, or Republican Nixon LITERALLY counting Jews in his administration and seeing nearly all Jews as 'the enemy'?
How about Republican George "Macaca" Allen?
How about Republican Rick "man on dog sex" Santorum?
How about the anecdote that Republican McCain called his wife the C*** word?
Or the apology that Republican McCain was forced to make after his extremely nasty insult of then 13 year Chelsea Clinton?
To the right wing Politico propagandist, he can go Cheney himself (or more explicitly, he can go look up the insulting language that Republican Cheney used ON THE SENATE FLOOR)l.

@Michael W: The text below the separator line in my post are copy n’ paste samples of a few of the items that can easily be found on the web that I think inspired the silly article in Politico in addition to the NYT article. The salty language hullabaloo was just a way to discredit BHO’s speeches and correct the admirers.
Thanks for the information about the link and I appreciate the correction but the link above is to the site where they were making that statement about Amazon and the CNN video.

You want to hear profanity, then check the Nixon tapes.
McCain said an awful thing to his wife, but she seems to have forgiven him. He definitely deserves some compassion for any interludes, I think.

Me Again, @18:39,
Please add Bub McDonnell (Repressive candidate for VA Governorship) to your list. His "12 fucking point plan" (for fixing transportation) has made a circuit of the "lefty blogs" to much hilarity. Especially after it came out that he'd once proposed a law to ban potty mouthings at schools. His claim that he meant to say "funding" never rang true somehow, or not any more than Macaca Allen's explanation that he *meant" "Mohawk" (as in haircut).

How about the time LBJ called up Dan Rather and said "Are you trying to fuck me, Rather?"
And don't even get me started on Nixon!
Like Steve said, the only thing new is that the press didn't report such stuff back then.
I actually thought it was funny when Cheney told Leahy to go fuck himself, because the wife of Ronnie Floyd (an obnoxiously smarmy megachurch pastor in Springdale, AR) had told a local interviewer that her dream dinner guests would be the Bushes and Cheneys. I wish I could have seen her face when that story came out.
As for the people at Politico, they're self-evidently shitheads. Besides the Cheney and McCain quotes in the post here, how about McCain calling his wife a cunt?

@ Myke K.
Yeah, you sure showed him!
"What's that?"
"The war you FUCKING started under false pretenses resulted in more than 200,000 innocent lives lost!"
"Yeah, well...at least when we started that war, we did it without dropping f bombs. Me 1 You 0."
You won that round, for sure.
The reason he walked away wasn't because you "won", but because much like the dumb shits I've had the displeasure of conversing with, much like the dude, it becomes apparent when you hit that point where facts matter less than hey "there's as much proof for christianity's beliefs as there is for lucy or evolution" that the brain just says (this is the lebowski dude reference here, dummy) "Fuck it" (not worth continuing, best to cut it off here)
