ORRIN HATCH STARTS TO CRACK.... MoveOn.org organized a protest at Sen. Orrin Hatch's (R-Utah) Salt Lake City office recently, objecting to the conservative senator's positions on health care policy and financing from the insurance industry. Andrea Mitchell asked Hatch about the protest during an MSNBC interview today.
Hatch initially talked about the broad base of financial support he receives, throughout the "health care system," including "liberal people, conservative people and moderate people."
But then the Utah Republican addressed the progressive organization behind the event at his office. "MoveOn.org is a scurrilous organization," he said. "It's funded by George Soros. He's about as left wing as you can find in this country. And they're up to just one thing, and that is to smear good people. And frankly, they're not gonna smear me without getting kicked in the teeth by me."
A few things stand out here. First, MoveOn.org isn't funded by George Soros. Second, MoveOn.org isn't "smearing" Hatch; everything the group has said about the senator is true.
But most important is the notion that Orrin Hatch intends to kick MoveOn "in the teeth." I assume he's not literally threatening violence against anyone, but this kind of rhetoric really is over the top. Some of Hatch's own constituents in Utah gathered at one of his offices for a peaceful protest. We're talking about regular ol' folks -- concerned citizens who want to see a broken health care system fixed. Hatch believes the appropriate response is to go on national television and talk about kicking grassroots organizers in the teeth?
What do you suppose the reaction would be if Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he found the Teabaggers to be "scurrilous" and intended to kick them in the teeth?

I think if you kick a teabagger in the teeth, there's someone else getting the worse end of that deal...
sorry. had to be done.

Long ago I called Hatch The Great Fulminator. He is always sounding off in high dudgeon with no regard to the facts.

I for one would applaud it. I think that's how Democrats should respond to this right wing onslaught.

Steve, you might be reaching on this one as far as tit for tat. No doubt MoveOn.org is not out to "smear" Orrin Hatch so he's way out of line there. All they need to do is keep presenting the truth and have him answer to the people.
I frankly don't care about reaction to one Repub or one Dem if such and such said this or that. Just stick to the facts, stick to the facts, stick to the facts...when faced with these truths, there's nowhere to hide.
Keep up the good work MoveOn.com

Someone needs to tell Hatch that being a member of a politically active group such as MoveOn.org does not disallow you from participating in protests against corrupt politicians. His ad hominem attacks against the group and principled liberals like Soros are the weakest kind of defense...but all this political hack has left in his bag of tricks.

i wonder if orrin is considered moderate by the vast tribes of mormon and other fundie enders all over utah and the western us...
he's gotta demonize both soros and moveon in order to keep the snarling beasts happy. the age-old linking of the two is probably as done-deal sunk in to these batshit crazy utahans that hatch was using it as a throwaway line.
there's a part of me that thinks idiots like orrin hatch are doing their best to keep the crazies from just goin' blood bath nuts on all of us...

As one of Senator Hatch's "constituents", I recommend you contact him as I did. If you'd like a local zip code to use, mine is 84108. We live in one of the wealthier areas in town, so he will probably notice that particular zip code.

Orrin is just proselytizing like the good Mormon church taught him to do. I mean, what better way for a Brigham Young grad to introduce Mormonism to people, than to portray Jesus as the "turn the other cheek, so I can kick those teeth out as well" kind of guy?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-wing_authoritarianism
In roleplaying situations, authoritarians tend to seek dominance over others by being competitive and destructive instead of cooperative. In a study by Altemeyer, 68 authoritarians played a three hour simulation of the earth's future entitled the Global change game. Unlike a comparison game played by individuals with low RWA scores, which resulted in world peace and widespread international cooperation, the simulation by authoritarians became highly militarized and eventually entered the stage of nuclear war. By the end of the high RWA game, the entire population of the earth was declared dead.[18]
Now consider that the majority of the population of Utah has sworn allegiance to a conformist, right-wing authoritarian hierarchy adamantly oppoed to social equality for women, LGBTs, poor people, and people of color, and you understand Orrin Hatch and his constituents a little better.

"Kicking in the teeth" is just a figure of speech, albeit a rather crass one. And it was directed against an organization, not a person. And by a really old man. Who cares?
You might rather focus on the "broad base of financial support he receives", including tens of thousands from BlueCross/BlueShield, Pfizer, et al.

Steve -- are you trying to mirror the Republican's reflexive media panty-bunching? It's boring and kind of stupid. Any time you finish a post with, "Imagine if a Democrat had said X!" you're basically saying, "This really isn't that bad, but by the Republican's hyper-sensitive standards it is a veritable apocolypse that deserves 24-hour news coverage over a 3-week period."
Lame. There's enough kooky Republican house members saying really dangerously offensive things to keep us busy without stretching Hatch's comments.

yeah, I'm with inkadu. A very, very old man said some words that were barely provocative and suggestive of violence. It's not "the most important" part of this story. You couldn't get a bus driver to even look up if that was happening directly behind him.
On the other hand, if Orrin heads on down to their office and flings his dentures at the receptionist, then let's roll some film on that.

People should stick up for Soros. Even though he's a sterotypical billionaire currency trader with a thick accent, he's done a lot of good with his money, which he earned and didn't inherit, and as far as I know he has never used political donations to advance his own interests. He played a significant role in the collapse of the Soviet empire.
Contrast Scaife, Forbes, Koch, Murdoch, Moon, and the Republican sugar daddies. Two of those guys are borderline mentally ill (Moon doesn't think he's Jesus, he thinks that he replaces Jesus), and Forbes, Koch and Scaife inherited their fortunes.

Has anyone compiled a list of the Republican comments, which if said by a Democrat, would have (and have) caused a huge outcry on the part of the Republicans? Seems like there are at least one or two every day, so the list would be long.

Looks like MoveOn told the truth about Hatch, and it sounded like an insult to him.
Honestly, if telling the truth about you is insulting to you, Sen. Hatch, then maybe you should look in the mirror for the solution to those feelings of revulsion.

What makes me saddest is that Orrin Hatch is, under no circumstances, an idiot. If you heard the eulogy that he gave for Ted Kennedy, you'd know that to be true.
And since he's not an idiot, the only other option left is that he's selfish and evil. Truly sad to see someone so obviously intelligent, be so overtly vile.

I assume he's not literally threatening violence against anyone, but this kind of rhetoric really is over the top.
Steve, you really do get the vapors over every little turn of phrase. The other day you were in a dither about a rather routine version of the Untergang meme, and now you're upset about this statement.
Yes, you assume he's not literally threatening violence. As would anyone with half a brain! Why? For one thing thing, he's referring to "the teeth" of MoveOn.org, so for him to be speaking literally, he'd have to kick every member of MoveOn.org in the teeth. Secondly, he's not Chuck Norris. He's 75. I doubt he could even get his foot up that high.
Really, you sound ridiculous when you flagellate like this. Stick to the key issues (like Hatch's ridiculous MoveOn = Soros and Soros = radical formulations) and give the civility policing a rest.

give the civility policing a rest
The irony of piously recommending that someone "give the civility policing a rest" evidently escapes the commentor . . .

Though MoveOn is not funded by Soros, this "Soros is the evil one" for spending some money on liberal causes in general should be shut down, and done so very simply. Soros has been involved mostly in the last 5 years and spent best I can figure, maybe 20 million in 2004. Now on the other hand you have a man, Sun Myung Moon, who has stated his desire to end "American style democracy," conned thousands of young people out of their lives using deception and has a stated goal of Korea playing the lead role in the world. He wants Korea to be number one.
Moon has spent billions propping up the communist dictatorship of North Korea going back to at least 1991. Moon helped NK with their cash problems, allowing NK to spend on keeping their nuke program going.
Moon has outspent ANYONE, let me repeat, ANYONE funding the conservative movement, the rise of the reality free theocratic authoritarian right. Though comparing Moon to Soros is beyond ludicrous,(Moon makes Soros look like a no count cheapskate as far as funding goes) it does show how out of touch with who they are, and how they got here, today's right is. It shows how grossly uninformed they are.
Moon is the right's number one sugar daddy and frankly, it isn't close if you look. BILLIONS.
BTW, Soros is a citizen.
So non-citizen, Moon, according to former members and Moon's own daughter in in law, smuggles shopping bags full of cash from overseas into the USA to fund and mold the minds of the right. The cash is mostly from Japan where the Unification Church has been guilty of swindling hundreds of millions - likely billions - of dollars from the citizens of Japan, literally targeting widows with their scams and he used that money empower today's right, to mold their minds.
What does Hatch do?
In 1984 he gave Moon a platform in the form of a hearing to claim he was persecuted when he cheated on his taxes. Though the case did have some serious legal issues, the fact that Moon cheated on his taxes was well established. Moon was caught red handed and also has a history of ignoring our laws.
Throughout his shilling for Moon, Hatch claimed he was not "friends" with Moon.
Well, look at how Hatch introduced Mrs. Messiah Moon in 1993 when she gave a talk in the Dirksen building, with Moon in the front row. She talked about how she and her husband were the messiah here to save America because we can't make it without their "messianic" help. This was also the event which led to congress passing a national holiday honoring Moon and his wife, "Parent's Day." Thank Dan Burton for that one, he did the leg work. Most of congress had no clue about the real meaning of the holiday and it was signed into law. Again, thank Republican Dan Burton for that.
See Hatch shill for Moon's messianic mission - he is introducing Mrs. Messiah here.
Below is what the very conservative first editor of Moon's Washington Times, James Whelan, said about Hatch's "friend's" organization - the one that molded today's right's minds:
http://tinyurl.com/yqqbmz
"They (the Moonies) are subverting our political system. They're doing it through front organizations--most of them disguised--and through their funding of independent organizations--through the placement of volunteers in the inner sanctums of hard-pressed organizations. In every instance--in every instance--those who attend their conferences, those who accept their money or their volunteers, delude themselves that there is no loss of virtue because the Moonies have not proselytized. That misses the central, crucial point: the Moonies are a political movement in religious clothing. Moon seeks power, not the salvation of souls. To achieve that, he needs religious fanatics as his palace guard and shock troops. But more importantly, he needs secular conscripts--seduced by money, free trips, free services, seemingly endless bounty and booty--in order to give him respectability and, with it, that image of influence which translates as power."
