WORST. COMPARISON. EVER.... As a rule, the right should probably try to steer clear of Martin Luther King comparisons. I don't think they're especially good at it.

This week, for example, National Review's Andy McCarthy said Rush Limbaugh treats people "in the Martin Luther King aspiration that the content of one's character is what matters, not the color of one's skin." I think he was serious.

The next day, politician turned infomercial salesman turned CNN correspondent J.C. Watts went even further.

At a recent fundraiser in Tulsa, former Republican Congressman J.C. Watts compared Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) to Martin Luther King, Jr. While it is not uncommon for people to compare those they admire to great historical figures, Watts' reasoning behind the comparison is somewhat questionable:

Watts praised U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn as "a threat to the system" and said that "God is going to have a special place in heaven for Tom Coburn." He compared the senator to Martin Luther King Jr., saying that, like King, Coburn could not be threatened or bought off.

That's the standard for King comparisons? Coburn, one of the most right-wing Republicans on the Hill, is similar to MLK because he isn't easily intimidated?

Please.

J.C. Watts -- there is something lacking in the content of his character. But, like many and maybe most humans, he does have an incredible capacity for deception and delusion especially when it brings home the bacon.

The Republican leadership today couldn't even hold Dr. King's hat, let alone wear it! Dr. King's memory, legacy, and noble efforts to show America its unjust, untenable and immoral treatment of non-white Americans is in peril because of the rhetorical hacks the Republican party seems to be employing as of late.

What is it exactly Coburn and his fellow travelers are trying to do that would even put them near, or in the same country as the Civil Rights Movement? When they act and speak, they insult! -Kevo

Dr. King, a well known-and revered- Republican. . .

Oh, wait: that was Jackie Robinson. . .

Don't be mean to J.C. He was just using hyperbole for effect. He didn't mean to offend anyone. If you were offended he apologizes.

Yeah right JC... in reality, Coburn would have us live in a theocracy, where he and his fundy buddies dictate how we live, who we hate, and how we die. Gotta give these guys credit for sticking with their truly evil bullshit. Of course, that's all they have nowadays.

I don't know if Repubs recognize irony, but Rush got booted out of an NFL bid because of his character.

comparing the lowest of the low, vile cretins like limbaugh and coburn to MLK is certainly ridiculous and disgrace. But OTOH, that wingnuts would hold MLK, a black man in such high regard as to use as an example of high ideals for their own is something. It is progress that great minority personalities would be mainstreamed and held as role models even for the insidious wingnut right (despite they're being crazy and twisted in their understanding of those personalities).

Please.

Kudos for not going with the obvious there. You know what I mean.

This is almost as over-the-top as when they were calling Bush, perhaps the most inarticulate man ever to hold the office, "Churchillian". They don't worry about making these types of comparisons, because they know their supporters are too ignorant of history and truly great men to know how inapt the comparisons are.

@zoot

I think you're being optimistic. These are the guys who, when alone with the like-minded, refer to MLK's birthday as "Ni**er Day".

When in public, they'll use faux admiration to show they're not racist. But the cynical eagerness to downgrade King's struggle by comparing it to that of Tom Coburn, or Rick Santorum, or whoever the embattled right-wing ghoul of the week - that is a backhanded "tribute" to MLK, if not an outright smear.

Not intimidated? Neither was Al Capone.

Using the same tough standards, I find that I am quite a bit like Gandhi and the Buddha. Gandhi and I are both bi-pedal and wear glasses and facial hair. Buddha and I both have round bellies and smile a lot. And, of course, MLK and I have the same last name and both have black children. Damn. I feel so much better about myself...

I do hope that God has a special place for people like Coburn; spending eternity with them would be no different than Hell.

Does J.C.Watts have some inside info on Sen.Coburn? Is he going to that special place in heaven soon? Does he have health insurance?

Posted by: Nancy Green on October 18, 2009 at 11:06 AM | PERMALINK

Not intimidated? Neither was Hitler or Jesus. Does that mean Coburn is like Jesus and Hitler? I thought Obama was like Hitler and the Messiah! Now Coburn is! Does that mean Coburn is now in league with Obama and the Gay Muslim Nazis to destroy America?!?

So....it could be said Coburn is like John Gotti as well?

Next up from the right-wing media machine: Jesus loves rich people and hates the poor.

Rush Limbaugh is like MLK?

Well, I can see that.

Dr. King struggled for civil rights, because at the time certain groups of American citizens were treated as second/third class citizens.

Rush recently said that there should be a new civil rights movement for the group that, in his view, is the new poor, oppressed minority: conservatives.

Dr. opposed the Vietnam War, stating that "A nation that continues year after year to spend more money on military defense than on programs of social uplift is approaching spiritual death".

Rush also opposed the war in Vietnam, and held his own personal protest by having his family doctor write a note to his draft board stating that little Rusty couldn't served because he had a cyst on his ass.

But Watts is a black Republican, so he's only allowed to compare white Republicans to prominent black men.

Posted by: Will on October 18, 2009 at 4:24 PM | PERMALINK

Coburn is too just like MLK: both are bipeds.

It's interesting how the right is always comparing its leaders to liberal greats -- MLK, JFK, Truman, FDR. I don't remember any liberals comparing their leaders to Nixon or Reagan or Eisenhauer or either of the Bushes.

Hello everyone. To be able to fill leisure intelligently is the last product of civilization, and at present very few people have reached this level. Help me!
