MONDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* New offensive launched by the Pakistani military Saturday in the insurgent haven of South Waziristan.

* President Hamid Karzai is headed for a runoff now that a panel of United Nations-appointed experts has stripped him of nearly a million votes.

* Multi-party talks with Iran get underway. Time has an interesting behind-the-scenes report on the pre-talk positioning.

* The administration has a new policy towards Sudan, which was fleshed out today.

* That's quite a hoax on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

* The stimulus saved/created a whole lot of jobs in education.

* The White House isn't happy about big bonuses on Wall Street.

* On a related note, it was nice to see Wall Street suffer a setback on the Hill. That doesn't happen often.

* House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) just loves the derivatives industry. What a joke.

* Senate HELP Committee Chairman Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) is eyeing reconciliation for student-loan reform.

* White House launches the GreenGov Challenge.

* Remember all of those Republican lawmakers who hated the recovery bill but love to deliver big checks back to their district? Add Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) to the list.

* There are a few problems with Superfreakonomics and it's analysis of global warming.

* The Washington Post's "salon" problem continues.

* Voters in Maine and Washington will vote on legal recognition for same-sex relationships, and the White House has issued a statement taking the correct position on both.

* A loophole in the consumer financial protection agency?

* That's a lot of planets.

* Louisiana Gov. Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) thinks Keith Bardwell should resign. Good call. But what about Sen. David Vitter (R)?

* Republican outreach to Jewish voters takes another step backwards.

* I'm beginning to think Stephen Hayes' reporting isn't especially reliable.

* Ziegler vs. Keene on Palin.

* New, bipartisan efforts on the Hill for a college-football playoff.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

re: "That's quite a hoax on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce."

Wasn't it more a hoax ON the media who were fooled by the announcement and the press conference? As far as I can tell, the CoC was never actually fooled by anything.

I mean, the CoC is a bad actor, but the people who were taken in are the ones who come out of this looking bad.

Regarding the "correct" position on same-sex relationships, I'm glad that Obama says he supports equal rights for lesbian & gay Americans, but I'll be more convinced when he actually does something to show it. DADT and DoMA are still on the books, and they should not be.

A rush of gay weddings could do wonders for a lethargic economy.

Wasn't it more a hoax ON the media

That was exactly my reaction.

When I read TPM's headline Chamber Punk'd. followed by an update The chamber confirms it was punk'd. I was wondering how exactly pranksters fooled the CoC.

But they didn't. The media got fooled when they ran with a story before confirming it.

"The White House isn't happy about big bonuses on Wall Street."

Stop talking and impose taxes.

Wonder if the Republican's "Token Jew" - Eric Cantor - will have anything to say on the matter.

And, of course, you know what a "kike" is, don't you? It's a Jewish Republican who's just left the room.

Sheesh.....Max Bauccus spends months diddling around with a health reform bill....do you think it's because so many members of Congress are tied up dealing with conflicting time commitments like......coming up with a college football playoff structure?

I'm out of work, no health insurance, trying to put a kid through college and trying to pay to keep an elderly relative in a nursing home and what's Congress focusing on.....a college football playoff structure.

I wanna tear my hair out!!!!!

New, bipartisan efforts on the Hill for a college-football playoff.

Because this country has absolutely no other problems they need to be thinking about.

I mean, Jesus.

"Its analysis," not "it's analysis."

HEY NINETEEN !

Like the Steely Dan tune, the latest ABC NEWS/WASH POST Poll shows that only 19% of Americans "trust the Republicans to make the right decisions for the country's future", while 49% "trust Obama to make the right decisions for the country's future".

ALSO:

* Americans by 51-37 percent in this latest poll say they'd rather see a healthcare reform plan pass Congress without Republican support, if it includes a public option based on affordability, than with Republican backing but no such element.

* The Republican Party's difficulties are shown in another result as well; in an early assessment of preference for congressional candidates in 2010, the Democrats lead by 51-39 percent.

Posted by: Joe Friday on October 19, 2009 at 7:24 PM | PERMALINK

I saw the ABC report as well. They claimed to be mystified that Obama's popularity was at 57%, as was support for the public option, while less than a majority supported his health plan. They were unable to make the connection that the votes against the health plan included people who don't like any sort of health plan and people who don't trust a health plan without a clear public option.

TPM is still smarting from being punk'd by balloon boy's parents, and so continues to irrationally project its failings onto others.

Deep hoax...

The balloon boy's father is in hot water. He perpetrated a hoax.
Apparently the right to engage in "hoax speech" isn't protected under the First Amendment.

Murdoch's golden goose (Glen Beck), trading in racial animosity, claims the President has a deep-seated hatred of white people. Beck's speech is protected because he wasn't "hoaxing."

Posted by: koreyel on October 19, 2009 at 8:21 PM | PERMALINK

On a related note, it was nice to see Wall Street suffer a setback on the Hill. That doesn't happen often.

It's not a big set-back -- Bean still intends to offer the amendment on the floor.

On a related note, it's worthwhile to hear what Durbin had to say on Sunday.

Posted by: Disputo on October 19, 2009 at 8:21 PM | PERMALINK

Koryel: Good point!

They need to have a lawyer who appreciates that and turns their hoax into protected political speech.

Kind of like yelling 'Fire' and whispering 'Obama' in a crowded theater.

Also, everyone who wants meaningful bank reform in this country needs to be in Chicago Oct 25-27 for the Showdown In Chicago protest to coincide with the American Bankers Association's annual convention. No word yet on which side banker Gianulias will be on....

The following is really grotesque, and more evidence of how Republicans are literally going off the deep end as crackpots. (Yes, literally literally.) From http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jonathan-powers/why-is-a-republican-pa-st_b_326155.html, we find this sickening story of a Republican State Rep. (compare the "bullet box or ballot box" crank Crabill of Virginia) who thinks the AGW theory is a left-wing plot. He's a vet too, but no license to defame other vets (that argument didn't help Kerry much did it?) Check out how the catch-phrases this crank uses:

Why Is a Republican PA State Rep Calling Iraq and Afghan Vets "Benedict Arnold?"

I served for 15 months in Iraq as a Captain in the Army's 1st Armored Division, and like so many of my fellow Iraq and Afghanistan veterans I returned on a new mission. ... Hundreds of us have joined forces with a coalition of nation security organizations to form Operation FREE to raise awareness about the links between climate change and national security. ... Unfortunately, Republican Pennsylvania State Representative Daryl Metcalfe believes that all of us are "Benedict Arnolds" and "traitor(s) to the oath he or she took [to] defend the Constitution."

In response to an email that invited elected officials in Pennsylvania to meet with veterans on Operation FREE's bus tour, Representative Metcalfe responded with the following:

Subject: Re: Veterans for American Power Bus Tour coming to your state ... As a veteran, I believe that any veteran lending their name, to promote the leftist propaganda of global warming and climate change, in an effort to control more of the wealth created in our economy, through cap and tax type policies, all in the name of national security, is a traitor to the oath he or she took defend the Constitution of our great nation! Remember Benedict Arnold before giving credibility to a veteran who uses their service as a means to promote a leftist agenda.

Drill Baby Drill!!!

"DADT and DoMA are still on the books, and they should not be."

...and, of course, Obama has the power to remove laws from the books by fiat. Isn't that within executive authority?

What's that you say? It isn't within executive authority to do that?

Oh.

The White House did NOT come out in support of expanded DPs in Washington state, and marriage equality in Maine. The White House issued a milquetoast campaign stump speech press release filled with vagaries about "I support rights for all couples and oppose divisive campaigns" only after Kerry Eleveld pestered them into it.

For the White House to "take the correct position" would require President "God Is In the Mix" to issue a new soundbite to replace his "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman" schtick that became the Prop 8 robocall. If the President ever grows enough spine to do so, I've already written the script for him:

"This is President Barack Obama. In a few weeks, voters in Maine and in Washington State will participate in referenda on whether to allow same-sex and senior couples greater rights, responsibilies, and legal protections in their familial relationships. I support full civil marriage equality for same-sex couples. I believe that the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which guarantees equal protection and due process to ALL Americans, includes our LGBT citizens as well. I oppose these hateful ballot initiatives which put a minority's Constitutional rights up for a popularity contest. That's not what America is about."

THAT would be strong support. What we have is the honey-coated, spineless bullshit the LGBT community has come to expect of this Administration.

Italian soccer league, local time on the 18th carried out eight games, the recent poor performance of the AC Milan beat Roma 2-1, wow goldwhile Sampdoria team returned to a 1:1 draw against Lazio.
AC Milan team is currently in the standings with 12 points came in the first 8-bit, than the wow gold"leader" Inter Milan behind seven points, while Roma is more worrying, merely 11 points behind 11th place.10.20C

Posted by: petty on October 19, 2009 at 11:08 PM | PERMALINK

Keori: Obama is the first US president to ever be in full support of LGBT equality, and you're spitting on him just because of semantic differences.

Believe it or not, that doesn't help our cause.

Posted by: Shade Tail on October 19, 2009 at 11:43 PM | PERMALINK

Shade Tail, if Obama were in full support of LGBT equality, he'd say the M word. Instead, he mumbles vagaries about "rights for families" and whenever the subject of civil rights comes up, he makes excuses about "got a lot on my plate" and "kick that can down the road a bit."

This President, like all the others, is NOT in full support of LGBT equality. Where on earth did you get that idea?

We got played. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But hey, there's always next year's Easter Egg Roll to look forward to.

I guess the only way Republicans would support government run health care is to reinstate the draft or wait for someone to be on their death bed:

Shade Tail, who said anything about executive fiat? Sometimes a leader can LEAD, though I can understand how we've lost sight of this given the last couple of administrations.

I get the impression you'd rather we all wait quietly for our constitutional rights, which will come when it's convenient?
