CHARLIE CRIST'S SHORT MEMORY.... In February, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R) in a rare display of bipartisanship, endorsed the White House's recovery efforts and stood alongside President Obama at an event intended to generate support for the depression-preventing stimulus. It was the kind of gesture that positioned Crist, at the time, as a different kind of Republican, focused more on problem solving than partisan nonsense and rooting for failure.

And now Crist would really appreciate it if we all forgot about it.

The Florida governor suddenly finds himself in a competitive Senate primary against former state House Speaker Marco Rubio, who's far more right-wing, and appeals much more to the party's far-right base. Because Republican activists have convinced themselves that the stimulus fell short, Crist is pretending he didn't support the Obama initiative, even though reality shows otherwise. Evan McMorris-Santoro reports:

Facing a primary challenge from the right, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is suddenly attacking President Obama for stimulus spending just six months after backing the stimulus package.

Crist defended his new radio ads slamming President Obama over his economic policy this afternoon, claiming that he joined the president at a pro-stimulus rally in February because, "I think it's the right thing to do to honor the office of President of the United States."

Yes, as far as the governor is concerned, he appeared alongside Obama as some kind of courtesy. The president came to Florida, so the governor felt compelled to be there.

That's a nice try, but Crist didn't just honor the office of the president, he specifically endorsed the recovery plan -- in a speech and in writing. And better yet, Crist was right -- the recovery plan was the right thing to do.

But Republican primary voters don't want to hear that, so Crist is scrambling, hoping voters forget what happened in February, when Crist did the right thing.

It's a shame what GOP primaries do to some people.

Crist thinks acknowledging Obama as the legitimate president will curry favor with the base? I don't like his odds.

I can just imagine the caliber of the "winners" of the Republican primaries in these various states.

One step above neanderthal, I'd imagine.

there's no irony here. it's a us senate clown car requirement...

and crist is just getting a head start: lying and backstabbing the american people...

teh perfect senate clown material!

As a Florida resident, Thanks for the update. I will try to find this in tomorrow's papers, but I doubt if will make the cut. Florida media loves Charlie.

A big hole of our state budget was partially filled by stimulus money. We have a regressive system (no progressive tax i.e. state income tax), and it's only because we get the tourists to pay a portion of the sales tax that it is close to being viable.

My hope is that Florida Republicans travel the same route as in most other parts of the country (and then we can flush the toilet). Charlie is helping.

Crist is doing something liberals never do - admitting his mistake and making amends by doing the right thing.

I've got a question. If the Republican party is in such disarray, so dysfunctional, and only appealing to a rabid base reflecting 20% of the public, then why is Crist in a "suddenly competitive contest" with an ultra winger? Why is a Republican expanding his lead in the VA governship? Why do many pundits predict Republican gains in 2010? All this happy talk of Republican doom and gloom seems incorrect.

Of course, the feckless bunch of Dems we have in Congress doesn't help matters.

Appear with the president as a courtesy??? He intentionally snubbed Bush when he was president because he didn't want to be seen with an unpopular president (Smart move, Charlie, but it does show you to be a hypocrit on the issue of "courtesy". This is why Karl Rove was so quick to endorse Rubio.

@ckelly: i agree with your pondering the incongruosity of it all...

it is at least 90% bright and shiny -- whether Repugnant doom or Repugnant 2010 wave... whether corporate media is playing a straight-in or a bank shot... and the frenzy will start early next year so's there'll be a real "horse race" all over the place...

the bread and circus citizenry will get caught up in the bright and shiny fer sure...we always do..

Crist was for the stimulus package before he was against it.

I've never voted Repub in my life (41 years of regular voting), but I'm now living in Florida and since the rules allow it, I'm going to switch from Dem to Repub 35 days before the primary so I can vote for Crist who will be a hell of a better Sen than Rubio. The day after the primary I'll switch back to Dem so I can vote, probably a futile vote, for Sink or whoever the Dem candidate is.Florida voting rules are great (snark).

The Republicans had so much success balancing the McCain ticket with an ignorant wing-nut, they decided to replicate the losing formula nation wide.

Let's recap. McCain, who was undeservedly seen as a moderate, passed over several more mainstream moderate potential running-mates, including several women, to trot out Sarah Palin.

Palin "electrified" the base with her winking and name calling. But she cannot string together a coherent substantive thought on any national issue.

Her ineptitude and extremism so alarmed the electorate that many white people voted for a black man.

Now the Club for Growth is running primary opponents against any elected Republican who won't openly call Obama an illegal alien, uppity, or a liar.

Republican senators are being shouted down in their meetings for not toeing the Teabagger/Limbaugh/Beck line.

Pass the popcorn.

Republican activists don't think that the stimulus "fell short." Republican activists think that there shouldn't have been a stimulus at all.

Primary battles such as the one between Crist and Rubio are the one's to watch to determine the future direction of the GOP. If Rubio wins despite the fact that the NRSC and NRC have endorsed Crist it will signal the end of the moderate wing of the GOP as a serious political force. Not only that, but it will also raise the serious question of whether the formal GOP political apparatus has lost control of the GOP to windbags like Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, etc.

As to the point that many political pundits are predicting that the GOP will gain seats in Congress, keep in mind that it is pretty normal for the pendulum to swing back a little bit after swinging so far in the Dems direction over the past two elections. There are something like 80 Demoratic members of Congress and 20 Democratic senators representing districts/states that voted for either Bush or McCain.

What the hell possessed Crist to run for the Senate rather than another term as governor?

The President of the Fla Senate, Mr Atwater R, is dismayed that the stimulus funds that we might receive for building a rail system between Tampa and Orlando will disappear unless we have a special session of the Fla legislature. So despite running away from the stimulus and the President, Gov Crist seems like he's going to call that special session. The question for Mr Rubio then becomes: For or Against the special session and the rail. Make more popcorn, honey!!

Unfortunately, whoever wins the Repub primary seems likely to beat Mr Kindrick Meeks D, so effectively gerrymander'd is my adopted state. So Mr Buzzman at 11:28AM has a good point.
