SUPPORTING THE TROOPS.... The timing of the new GOP attacks could be better.
Republicans are already signaling they will paint any Dem opposition to General Stanley McChrystal's demand for an expanded counterinsurgency as letting down the troops. House GOP leader John Boehner said today that Obama's failure to fill the General's demand right now amounted to "foot-dragging" that "puts our troops there at much greater danger than they would be otherwise."
Three thoughts come to mind. First, this notion that deliberate decision-making undermines the military is absurd. President Obama explained yesterday that the U.S. shouldn't "put resources ahead of strategy," says "we're going to take the time to get this right." Boehner may prefer to escalate first and think later, but we tried it that way for eight years. It didn't work.
Second, George W. Bush took months to ponder the "surge" policy in Iraq. I don't recall leading Republicans whining at the time about presidential "foot-dragging" that "puts our troops there at much greater danger than they would be otherwise."
And third, if John Boehner wants to talk about putting U.S. servicemen and women in danger, shouldn't he explain why he voted against troop funding just a couple of weeks ago?

Right, putting thousands more men and women in harm's way in a stupid unwinnable war is "letting down the troops." If the Democrats can't whack Republicans on the head with this and knock them senseless ... oh, yeah, they already are senseless ... they couldn't fight their way out of a paper bag.

For 8 years under Bush, Republicans insisted that we had just the right number of troops in Afghanistan.
A month after taking office, Obama ordered a doubling of the US combat forces in the country, and now Republicans say he's being too timid if he doesn't order 40,000 more?
Why weren't they hammering Bush all these years?

Gee, I think a little more forethought back in 2002 and 2003 when Bush was selling his pissant unnecessary war in Iraq to the American people would have been helpful.
But hey, that's me.

The Infotainment Today Show™ also quoted 'the Dick' as saying essentially the same thing this morning. Dithering in Afghanistan leads to defeat and imperiling our troops etc, etc, bla, bla. Of course all his statement did for me, was to immediately remind me of the 8 years of dithering in Afghanistan the BushDickco team did. Oh, and all the stories about under armored soldiers they put out into the battlefield post haste.
Dick, meet my good friend, Kettle.

For my next trick I'll explain how moving 40,000 people INTO the battle zone makes them safer....

At a tangent to the topic perhaps, can anyone here suggest why General Stanley McChrystal was not fired (ala MacArthur) for publicly speaking outside of the chain-of-command prior to reporting to the President?

The Republican party hs "let down the all troops", let down America and Americans all along. The Republican party refuses to be held accountable for this debauchle.Especially John Boehner.

You are stating this as if there could be some thoughtful process behind Boehner's comments.
Why?
Republicans constantly play "the asshole game" and the press never calls them on it - and you aren't either.

Two words: Karl Rove
His dung-covered fingers are stuck in every orifice still.
(PS: Dear Steve, can we please settle on a convention for the term "health care"? Here are the choices *health care*, *healthcare*, OR *health-care*. My spellchecka only disses *healthcare*)

Considering that we still don't know who will be president in Afghanistan, and we don't know how successful Pakistan's current offensive will be, it might be a little prudent to make sure we have a strategy that has an actual, concrete goal.
Or just go the GOP approach, and keep sending our men and women into the meat grinder, for a good old fashion war of attrition.
We've got more warm bodies to waste than the Taliban does, right?

Did Lincoln do whatever his generals demanded? no, he fired McClellan. Truman fired MacArthur. During the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Joint Chiefs wanted to invade Cuba, not blockade it. Since we now know that Castro had tactical nuclear weapons, we also know that blindly accepting the military's advice, as opposed to weighing it in the context of braoder national interests, can get 100 million people killed.
And yet, every day my conservative friends tell me that Obama must 'obey" the advice of McChrystal.
