THE MEDIA SCANDAL THAT WASN'T.... There was something about this story that just didn't seem right. To hear Fox News tell it, Kenneth Feinberg, the Treasury Department's special pay master, was set to do a round of interviews on Tuesday. Obama administration officials excluded Fox News from the press pool, the story goes, prompting the major networks to revolt and rally behind Fox News.

The network cranked up the indignation machine yesterday, and worked overtime to characterize Fox News as a poor victim of heavy-handed White House abuse. And at first blush, it might seem like the Republican network has a point -- trying to exclude Fox News from a press pool at Treasury does seem excessive.

There's one key problem with the story: it didn't happen the way Fox News said it happened.

Feinberg did a pen and pad with reporters to brief them on cutting executive compensation. TV correspondents, as they do with everything, asked to get the comments on camera. Treasury officials agreed and made a list of the networks who asked (Fox was not among them).

But logistically, all of the cameras could not get set up in time or with ease for the Feinberg interview, so they opted for a round robin where the networks use one pool camera. Treasury called the White House pool crew and gave them the list of the networks who'd asked for the interview.

The network pool crew noticed Fox wasn't on the list, was told that they hadn't asked and the crew said they needed to be included. Treasury called the White House and asked top Obama adviser Anita Dunn. Dunn said yes and Fox's Major Garrett was among the correspondents to interview Feinberg last night.

Simple as that, we're told, and the networks don't want to be seen as heroes for Fox.

"There was no plot to exclude Fox News, and they had the same interview that their competitors did," a Treasury spokesperson added. "Much ado about absolutely nothing."

CBS News White House correspondent Chip Reid, who was recently seen lobbying from the press briefing room for Ronald Reagan to get a Nobel Peace Prize, told his national television audience that the White House "crossed the line" by trying to exclude Fox.

Except, that didn't happen. "This White House has demonstrated our willingness to exclude Fox News from newsmaking interviews, but yesterday we did not," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest. He added, "The president and other high ranking officials and people like Ken Feinberg have done interviews with Fox in the past and will do them in the future."

Fox News surely knows that this "controversy" is not what it appears to be, but the network pushed it anyway, hoping to score some cheap points and desperate to position itself as a victim. I can only assume that the relevant details will soon be ignored, and going forward, this "deliberate snub" will be used as an example of a White House gone too far.

We also had Jake Tapper expressing concern (brown-nosing Murdoch and Ailes) about the treatment of "one of our sister organizations".

"Fox news (...) knows that this didn't happen", and why should that stop them from acting as if it did?

This is what passes for journalism in this country? What a sad state of affairs. Instead of reporting the news, the media wants to set the narrative. What an embarrassment. This needs to get just as much attention as the "much ado about nothing" incident.

The White House response that YES Fox has been excluded from interviews before BUT NOT THIS TIME is priceless..

Nonetheless, the Beltway Elite is shocked, SHOCKED to hear that presumptuous Obama saying that Fox is not a real news station.

Beware of twits in the media - learn to navigate away from the stupid and turn off hate radio!

WTF does good ol'Chip think he's up to? FOXNEWSCHANNEL is a political operation, complete with an ideological agenda out to destroy the Obama Administration. Oh, and its good for Murdoch's profit margin to get into a pissing match with the WH! -Kevo

Fox "News" lied?

My entire world-view is shattered.

The whole story is proof that the WH is right to be doing what it's doing and calling out the Fox Republican Network. It is also damning of the MSM bozos like the CBS flak Reid, for whom being a "reporter" means channeling whatever bullshit is out there. He was probably as good a journalism major as Sarah Palin.

"There was no plot to exclude Fox News..."

There was also no (coherent) reason to do so. For a pool camera? Fox's claim makes no sense. That's why it just didn't seem right.

What amazes me continually is the news correspondents who don't practice the simplest checking methods. They simply function on assumption. Man, that is the way to get into trouble so FAST!! But since networks and large print organizations don't care about accuracy anymore, there is no price to be paid for stupidity.

So is Chip 'a pile of corporate/repiglican pig shit' Reid going to report his error now ?

So, if a tree falls in the forest, and no one hears it, is it STILL Obama's fault?

i look forward to monday's hardball when tweety devotes his opening segment to correcting the one he did friday propelling the fox story. ... with susan page right there by his side apologizing for her gullibility and inability to confirm a story before she goes on cable teevee to talk about something she knows nothing about.

Posted by: linda on October 24, 2009 at 10:49 AM | PERMALINK

"This White House has demonstrated our willingness to exclude Fox News from newsmaking interviews, but yesterday we did not," said White House spokesman Josh Earnest.

...but yesterday we did not. Sure. I believe you. The first part of the quote is the story, kids. Willingness to exclude. The second part is what you'd like to focus on. It makes the administration look a little less like the cowards they and their ideological ilk really are. Absolutely pathetic.

Posted by: TLimits on October 24, 2009 at 10:51 AM | PERMALINK

This is why I stopped watching teevee 13 years ago. There's absolutely nothing to be gained from watching the actors on the evening news preen like prima donnas and play out their fake melodramas in a bid for ratings.

Fox's unwillingness to carry presidential speeches speaks volumes about its seriousness in covering news. I think their prior actions clearly absolve the White House from any need to treat them as a serious news organization.

Considedring the RNN’s long history of fabricating controversy from whole cloth, it wouldn’t surprise me in the least to learn they intentionally left their name off of the list of networks who'd asked for the interview, just to facillitate to creating one more in a long line of non-stories critical of the White House.

Posted by: Giant Kid on October 24, 2009 at 12:42 PM | PERMALINK

To Darsan54: You are spot on - stupidity marches on to the next fake story. It really rankles that reporting is basically a game of "telephone". I'm sure Howard Kurtz will have a panel on Reliable Sources ( the program name makes me chuckle) to pontificate even further about this non-issue. Maybe he'll include McCain so we can get the real story….

Posted by: DTR on October 24, 2009 at 1:06 PM | PERMALINK

Problem is, MSNBC was pushing Fox's version of the story too. Both Chris Matthews and Maddow did extended pieces, both starting from the premise that the WH tried to exclude Fox from the interview and that other networks cried foul and came to their defense. I wonder if they'll correct that?

Posted by: scott on October 24, 2009 at 1:33 PM | PERMALINK

I just sent Matthews an email suggesting that NBC news might consider doing some, you know, reporting, before he starts his discussions based on faulty premises.

Reporting is essentially dead on TV.

Fox News aka, The Jesus Channel/ GOP TV/ The Glorious Official Republican Government News Network.

While Fox News has the highest ratings, its also the same group of people that make up just 20% of Americas electorate the far right-wing of the GOP.

There will always be an audience for the far right and thats Rupert Murdocks Fox News demographic.

Rupert keeps them frothing at the mouth with manufactured fear and GOP talking-points, phony outrage.

Fox is also a right-wing echo chamber.. notice that when The Wall Street Journal, The Weekly Standard people are on Fox News theres never disclosure that these people are all Rupert Murdock employees.

Imagine if MSNBC or CNN did this I dont know how Fox News gets way with constantly recycling Rupert Murdocks employees (sockpuppets) from his various media properties.

Also theres hardly a word on the MSM about Murdocks world wide (far right-wing) media empire.

Murdock has a lot of influence, example: all of his various sockpuppets, Hannity, Beck, etc, and all of Murdocks worldwide media holdings trash global warming, President Obama and anything else right-wing Rupert Murdock dislikes.

I think that press and especially individual journalists are deathly afraid of Rupert Murdock and what he can do to them professionally.

Rupert Murdock is the new William Randolph Hearst.

Another thing, Sarah Palin, who is a favorite among the Faux News/ Right-wing crowd is getting Rupert Murdocks wingnut welfare.

Palins (Rupert Murdocks ghostwriter) book publisher is HarperCollins a wholly owned Rupert Murdock subsidiary, you betcha.

Finally, there should be an award given to the guy that writes the ominous, scary music for Fox News... he's obviously a full-time employee.

No seriously... whenever there's a special where Rupert Murdock wants to convince Americans that Saddam Hussein has WMD, or that Iran/North Korea is going to attack America tomorrow, or a Hannity or Beck segment where they want to scare their right-wing audience (even more) there's always that ominous music to go along with the story.

It's like a scary GOP music video.

Which just further proves the point that Fox news is not a news organization but represents the opposition as they do anything to smear and demean the President and the dems. I'm disappointed that other journalists fell for their spew...including... Gilda Ratner of Talk Radio News... who appears on the Thomm Hartman show and expressed nothing but extremely angry outrage over the 'false' story that the WH was excluding Fox news.

I await her apology. She was duped by the very people she set out to defend. Let's see if this changes her perspective about Fox Noise.

Posted by: bjobotts on October 24, 2009 at 6:32 PM | PERMALINK

Where was all this faux outrage when MSNBC, CNN, etc. were all savaging Bush on a daily basis? One who network happens to actually challenge Obama and the White House unlike the other network lemmings, and you all cry foul. Hilarious.

Posted by: Bobby on October 24, 2009 at 9:09 PM | PERMALINK

Bobby...nice try but the difference is the Bush administration was the most corrupt of modern times and thee is absolutely no comparison to Obama after 10 months. Like saying after Bush policies started and insurgency and lost 12 billion dollars shrink wrapped on pallets and sent into a war zone, after killing tens of thousands of innocents while torturing and killing others deserves the same criticism as Obam treating Fox news like an opposition party with a microphone...not even in the same universe.

Your statement is extremely ludicrous and petty showing a complete lack of critical thinking. Best go have another beer and STFU.

Posted by: botts on October 24, 2009 at 11:34 PM | PERMALINK

Bobby, you actually think that Joe Scarborough (MSNBC) and Lou Dobbs (CNN) have never "challenged" Obama and the White House? Delusional, just delusional.

Posted by: daniel rotter on October 25, 2009 at 2:38 AM | PERMALINK

botts.. your post is so full of ridiculous claims that you are impossible to be taken seriously. Don't you think that if Bush had been guilty of the ridiculous claims you posted, that atleast ONE major news network would have broken those stories? Spend less time in your Left-wing hate-filled blogosphere, and come back to reality. You spew such propaganda and accuse me of a lack of critical thinking. Again, hilarious.

Posted by: Bobby on October 26, 2009 at 10:42 AM | PERMALINK

Oh, btw... this story implying Fox made this all up, which not ONE other major news network reported (shocker!), has been refuted. Here's a crazy idea... try to actually verify a story posted by some random internet web site before running with it as gospel. Don't you think if this version of the incident were true, atleast ONE of Fox's competitors would have reported on it?
