LAND TRIPLES DOWN.... Following up on a story I've been following, Richard Land, head of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, doesn't seem to recognize the wisdom of quitting when behind.

Land initially raised a few eyebrows when he condemned health care reform in unusually offensive terms. "What they are attempting to do in healthcare, particularly in treating the elderly, is not something like what the Nazis did. It is precisely what the Nazis did," Land said. In the same remarks, Land compared Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel to Josef Mengele.

Asked to defend his comments, he refused to walk them back. Specifically on likening Emanuel to Nazis, Land insisted "the analogy is apt and I stand by it."

After the Anti-Defamation League expressed some concerns, Land didn't apologize for the substance of his remarks, but he at least showed some regret: "It was never my intention to equate the Obama administration's healthcare reform proposals with anything related to the Holocaust.... Given the pain and suffering of so many Jewish and other victims of the Nazi regime, I will certainly seek to exercise far more care in my use of language in future discussions of the issues at stake in the healthcare debate."

So, problem solved, right? Wrong. Reader J.C. flagged this story in which Land completed the 360-degree turn.

One week after apologizing for comparing Democratic leaders to the Nazis, [Land] has reneged on his promise to stop using such comparisons.... Land "still believes there are connections to be made between some underlying philosophies held by the Germans and others in the first half of the 20th century, and certain elements under discussion in the health care reform debate today." Land argued that the philosophies of some of those pushing health-care reform "bear a lethal similarity in their attitudes toward the elderly and the terminally ill and could ultimately lead to the kinds of things the Nazis did." Land also attacked those who were attempting "to remove the Third Reich as a subject of discussion when it comes to the healthcare debate."

Three things to keep in mind. First, Land's promise about avoiding Nazi references seems to have lasted one whole week. Second, to argue that health care reform bears a "lethal similarity" to Nazi tactics is obviously crazy.

And third, Land is concerned that people might want to "remove the Third Reich as a subject of discussion when it comes to the healthcare debate"? Well, sure. They want to remove the subject as part of the debate because it's completely insane.

Land's rhetoric is despicable enough, but to express regret to the ADL, and then triple down on a disgusting comparison a week later is just humiliating.

Another M.O. of wingnuts (especially the fundy kind): Never, EVER back down. Say something completely wrong and/or loony? Don't apologize. Turn that fucker up to 11! Apologizing is weakness. Only pussies apologize.

The guy's a Confederate Baptist for chrissakes, what do you expect?

the "southern" Baptist Church was founded in 1859 to defend the divine right of slavery and the treason of the South. They haven't changed in 150 years.

Jaw dropping insanity seems to be the hot plate of the day for the delusional Right! -Kevo

I see this as the religious right trying out a new culture war issue. I think the leadership of the SBC, just like Fox News, exists primarily as a propaganda mouthpiece for the Republican party.

I have to admit, I find it fascinating to hear the wingnuts declare that Adolph Hitler is fully responsible for the German healthcare system, even though it was established before he was born. I guess Hitler had a time machine, just like Obama does -- yet another similarity that proves that Obama is Just Like Hitler!

He also uses a common trope of the loonie right, the magic words "and could ultimately lead to".

Gosh, it must be hard for those people, living as they apparently do on the postage-stamp-sized flat spot at the top of so, so many slippery slopes.

When I was a little boy playing games in the backyard, we would 'make pretend', and we used the magic words "let's say" to make any possible imagining temporarily true, and we fought Nazis and space monsters and all sorts of bad guys. Even at the time we knew it wasn't 'for real'.

And, when I got older, I grew out of it.

Ahhh, I was wondering why the the Obama administration was buying up all the cattle cars. Now it all makes sense. Kudos to Land for foiling Obama's Nazi plot to ship one half of our seniors out to Kansas to be gassed and the other half to be experimented upon for "medical effectiveness" research.

Their will be riches in Heaven for men like Land I assure you. For example, weeping and gnashing of teeth for all eternity comes to mind.

even a quick read of the history of christendom reveals the many times that "the church" has devolved from a gospel of love into a gospel of hate -- given its legacy, this leader of the Southern Baptists really has a short distance to travel to indict those 1000s of 'christians' as a people with hate in their hearts.

sweet jimmy carter could never stomach the hate (he went with lust on occasion, or so he says -- but left the church recently because of its essential misogyny -- how's that for irony?).

just saw him last night in the moore film. it was surreal to hear what he said 35 years ago. prophetic, and anti-Baptist fer sure.

As one who delves about in the bowels of conspiracy theory, it is, ahhh.... disconcerting, at best, the depth to which today's medical/pharmaceutical/industrial complex is rooted in Nazi science.

For those who wish to know, it's very Illuminating.

Isn't it time to stop treating Richard Land as any kind of religious figure anyway?

Posted by: Coop on October 24, 2009 at 11:47 AM | PERMALINK

why...a leader in the Southern Baptist Convention who is a batshit-insane asshole.

There's a surprise!

Posted by: LL on October 24, 2009 at 12:22 PM | PERMALINK

Land, like an increasing number of right-wing Republicans, is like a bratty little boy who has just figured out which bad words make mommy and daddy mad. So he repeats them over and over until he gets a slap-down that justifies his persecution complex.

It's incredible that adults like Land are willing to compare -- in public -- a public health care option with Nazism and the development of a Master Race. What an embarrassment to the Republican Party. How low they have sunk. They are rapidly becoming the laughingstock of the world. People the world over are just shaking their heads and shunning them.

No wonder only 20 percent of Americans say they identify themselves as Republicans.

Like Catholic Donohue, Baptist Land is a prime recruiting tool for atheism.

-Keep up the good work, fellas!

The real slippery slope is that, once you've compared Democrats to Nazis, there's no going back. As of now, there's a significant slice of this country's political leadership that's decided to opt out of rational debate. How did we get to this point?

Posted by: MattF on October 24, 2009 at 1:01 PM | PERMALINK

one more reason why the fastest growing religious group in america has a membership that says they have "no religion."

TCinLA:

A small thing but in the interest of historical accuracy: The SBC was founded in 1845.

Otherwise, you are completely on target.

Posted by: Recovered Southern Baptist on October 24, 2009 at 2:59 PM | PERMALINK

It's simple. You cannot be considered "pro-life" and oppose health care reform.

To oppose health care reform is to participate and support the mass murder of 45,000 Americans every year. Maybe that's exactly what these unreconstructed Confederate traitors want: they still want to kill Yankees.

"...they till want to kill Yankees." Toutatis @ 4:45 PM.
And are more than willing to take whatever casualties required...

Oh, bloody hell--he's been reding Jonah Goldberg!

Will someone please ask (is it Mr. or Dr.?) Richard Lang what any of this has to do with religion or (Southern Baptists are Christians, I guess) with the teachings of Jesus Christ?

Seems like he's gone far away from his fields of specialty. Why are his opinions more valid than my neighbor who is a plumber?

He's not speaking ethically when he brings up Hitler and Nazis. He seems to be on the wrong committee. What strings were pulled to get him there?

This man is counterfeit.

Why is it that all these so-called leaders of churches, open their mouths and immediately prove they are NOT Christian. They give Christianity a bad name.

Posted by: Bonnie on October 24, 2009 at 7:04 PM | PERMALINK

Land will not support anything that helps those whose ancestors were slaves. He's one of America's modern bigots, blaming God for his despicable views.

Scream early.
Scream often.
Scream loudly.

That's why God created the internet.
It's a scream vent. It allows our individual scream, and the screams of our civilization, to harmlessly vent into the ether.

Good morning. That you may retain your self-respect, it is better to displease the people by doing what you know is right, than to temporarily please them by doing what you know is wrong. Help me! It has to find sites on the: Window coverings magazine. I found only this - window coverings online. Window covering, send these muscles in disagreeing oil and see them by. Window covering, but unique land is obsessively not pointed by few emerging expeditions. THX , Chenoa from Bangladesh.
