FEELING DOBBS-RELATED EMBARRASSMENT.... It's a fine line CNN is trying to walk. On the one hand, it pays Lou Dobbs handsomely to host a nightly news program, which Dobbs uses as a platform to denounce Hispanic communities. On the other, CNN wants to present itself as concerned about those same communities.

Instead of being simply a draw for Hispanic viewers, CNN's four-hour documentary, "Latino in America," turned into a political rallying cry for activist groups who are calling on the cable news channel to fire Lou Dobbs, a veteran anchor with well-known views on immigration.

An array of minorities held small protests in New York and other cities on Wednesday, the first night of CNN's presentation. They are trying to highlight what they say are years of lies about immigration by Mr. Dobbs, who anchors the 7 p.m. hour on CNN.

CNN, a unit of Time Warner, has not commented on the protests or covered them on its news programs. One of the activists featured in the documentary said she tried to raise what she called Mr. Dobbs's "hatred" on one of the channel's news programs Wednesday, but her remarks were cut from the interview.

Now, if you've ever done a pre-recorded television interview, you know it can be a little frustrating -- you'll answer all kinds of questions, and the discussion will last quite a while, but when it airs, you're lucky to get 10 seconds of airtime. Naturally, those interviewed for "Latino in America" found that very little of what they actually said ended up on CNN.

But in this case, there's a little more to it.

Isabel Garcia, a civil rights lawyer who was featured in "Latino in America" and organized an anti-Dobbs protest in Tucson on Wednesday, said that CNN edited her comments about the anchor out of an interview.

She had expected a 15-minute conversation about immigration opposite Joe Arpaio, the sheriff of Maricopa County, Ariz., and a staunch supporter in immigration enforcement, on the prime-time program "Anderson Cooper 360." During the taped interview Wednesday, she said she made several unprompted comments about Mr. Dobbs.

She said she called Mr. Arpaio and Mr. Dobbs "the two most dangerous men to our communities," and said that "because of them, our communities are being terrorized in a real way." She also asserted that CNN was "promoting lies and hate about our community" by broadcasting Mr. Dobbs's program. The comments were not included when the interview was shown Wednesday night.

"They heavily deleted what I did get to say," she said.

The crux of what Garcia had to say specifically dealt with a CNN host, so CNN decided those comments had to be left on the cutting room floor. The network that's had to cover for Dobbs' tendencies before continues to feel at least some embarrassment.

Matt Yglesias' suggestion is a good one: "[I]f CNN wants to stand by Dobbs then, fine, they should stand by Dobbs. But if they want to stand by Dobbs then they should stand by Dobbs and feature him prominently in their four-hour 'Latino in America' documentary. After all, from what you can see watching the network day-to-day the executives at CNN think Dobbs has a credible and important perspective on this issue. Instead, they just kind of want to sweep the crazy uncle under the rug for the purposes of a big special, and then trot him back out again when everything's back to normal."

It's an unsustainable relationship.

What's the over/under on Dobbs getting a job at the house of crazy?

If it's 30 days, I'm taking the under.

It's not called the Cretins' News Network without reason, you know?

Personally, I think CNN holds Dobbs in reserve for when they need to boost ratings or media attention. Low ratings month? Let Dobbs loose on a topic guaranteed to amp up the fever swamp. Instant ratings bonanza.

How else can you explain their continued support? Either that, or Dobbs has pictures of somebody up high in a compromising position.

GET REAL...in the same way policemen have their BLUE LINE and those in Labor stand firm against any (even legitimate) criticism...ALL those in any media related position will PULL TOGETHER and defend one another regardless of the accuracy or honesty of the stand! WHO is driving this crap "story" about FAUX NEWS? Not the WH...they have responded to questions asked, as usual. AND, while we're on the subject if I hear ANYONE say one more time "Harry Reid is a genius at counting votes", or "Nancy Pelosi is a bear on the robust public option"...I'll throw up...How about waiting until they actually DO SOMETHING and then tell us!!! Course, then, like my husband says what the Hell would they put ON 24/7? I'm just betting a thinking person could figure something out!

At least Dobbs manages to keep a dry eye with the horror of brown people entering the country .

"Latino in America" and "The Lou Dobbs Show" are two sides of the same coin: Pimping For Viewers. . .

OK, first thing, whenever you are doing an interview with a reporter. Bring your own recording device and record the interview. If the reporter doesn't want you to record it, get up and leave. News agencies routinely edit people in a way that changes their meaning. Switching answers from one question to another, editing out key parts of answers etc etc.

I watched my dad when he used to get interviewed by the local news and what ended up on the air or in the paper often bore little resemblance to what actually happened during the interview.

The practice is a disgrace and should be condemned.

Congress should pass a law that requires news agencies to make full unedited transcripts of all interviews available to the public.

Rant over.

Because Fox News gets to be the main propaganda machine, CNN's task is to sew chaos and madness by a narrow 'multicultural' -- heh heh heh -- perspective, from suburban sweetness and light, goofy, meaningless commentary to mad dog rabid hate a la Lou Dobbs...

CNN makes all of us feel like happy 'murikans, and Lou makes white folks feel special.

That's the niche for CNN. if you don't like the nihilism, don't watch...

Dobb's wife is a hispanic-American. How does that sqaure with the xenophobic / borderline racist persona he presents on CNN? This an honest question - I don't get how someone's personal and public life can contain such obvious conflict, no matter how much you compartmentalize.

Who made a gaggle of so-called "Hispanics" the arbiters of what any cable network should or shouldn't be showing anyway? Hey, maybe you open-borders-favoring miscreants should get rid of Dobbs by using the off button on your sets. It's no wonder many Americans don't want to see your illegal alien amigos infesting the nation in droves the way you payasos complain. Waah! Waah! Waah!

I don't recall anyone calling for the removal of those two Univision propagandists Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas lately. Maybe such action is in order. Maybe Telemundo will hire that bottom-feeding CFR lackey Soledad O'Brien. What say you?

Since CNN is part of Time Warner, why not have all these youngs folks who Twitter tell all their friends how BAD the latest Warner Bros. movie is - do that on enough Fridays and watch the WB Box Office numbers plummet.

It's about 30 minute segments. How much revenue and ratings. The brain of the tv viewer changes every 30 minutes. It's designed that way. Remember when Ted Turner started his network 5 minutes after everyone else? It broke broadcast television forever and began their 24/7 search for the news. The idea that the mind control used by the networks has changed is wrong. They only get more sophisticated. It doesn't matter about 7:00 PM special because that doesn't have anything to do with the 5:00 PM hate hour on all the networks. It's what's for dinner. It's the dark meat, the other white meat.
They do not respond to any pressure or to pretend their report will be news. That is imagination for the viewer to entwine in their view of reality. Imagine having two reporters for 24/7 reporting? And when the war ends, they are down to one. Better than the other networks though. They don't have any one that classifies as a journalist any longer. Everyone else represents a side in some lobbying game. Stupid is very well represented. Reality is not.

nyt oct. 11: Fox Business is keen on [hiring] administration critic, Lou Dobbs, who met for dinner with Mr. Ailes last month, according to two people with direct knowledge of the meeting.

I agree CNN's relationship w/ Dobbs seems unsustainable. But we really don't have a very clear window on the business (I don't say journalistic, still less ethical) considerations underlying CNN managers' decision to keep him on the air. (The various lame-brain analyses here underscore this point.)

He has a loyal audience & presumably is profitable for the network. (And precious-metals dealers & vendors of durable medical equipment will always want to reach that demographic.) On the other hand, it's not as if there aren't equally or more competent crudballs-in-waiting who'd kill to play the demagogue on a major cable network. (I'm struck by how dodderingly, splutteringly inarticulate Dobbs is compared even to Beck & Hannity.) If they're going to get grief for hawking a raving bigot, I'd think they'd want a better upside than he can deliver. Which raises the grim possibility that they'll can him only to come up w/ somebody worse. Après Lou le deluge?

Lou Dobbs is a racist because he wants the immigration laws of the country enforced! His relationship with CNN is unsustainable (why) because he refuses to toe the liberal line on immigration. You may not want to hear this but there are an awful lot of American's who share his views on immigration, particularly in this economy. I don't defend him on his birther nonsense but I do know on the subject of immigration he puts his immigration opponents on his show and allows them his say, thats more than what his critics want to do.

While Dobbs has some problematic views on Hispanics, he is correct about H-1Bs and other terrible methods for undercutting the labor market in IT. The H-1B and L-1 visas have virtually destroyed the market for American IT workers. There are literally millions of undocumented tech workers here mostly from India with marginal skills and resumes filled with lies and outright falsehoods.

Dobbs is the only one standing up for American workers. While some of what he says is bad, in a recession, we need someone standing up for American workers and the rights of Americans to get jobs in America.

What is so good about undocumented immigrants, anyway? We need jobs for poor Americans.

I'm a liberal in most things, but I cannot understand why undercurring the labor market for poor americans, giving jobs to immigrants at the expense of OUR OWN LOWER INCOME RESIDENTS and violating immigration laws is somehow liberal.

I just call it stupid, myself.

I'm an American for jobs for Americans.

How exactly is Dobbs a racist? Because he wants the immigration laws to be enforced?

If you have a problem with our immigration laws, then elect someone who will loosen them. Don't wail at anyone who wants them enforced and call them a racist.

Eventually, you'll dull down the true meaning of racist/racism until it means nothing.

We are in the middle of a terrible recession, really a depression. Thousands upon thousands have lost their jobs. Jobs are disappearing.

And what is the reaction of the "liberals" to this? PROMOTING MORE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION BY MEXICANS, INDIANS, CHINESE, GUATAMALANS, and SO FORTH!!!!

If you are a liberal like me, ask yourself: Why is illegal immigration considered a conservative issue? I think that liberals and conservatives BOTH need jobs, and they need jobs in America, not Bangalore, Singapore or Mangipoor.

We need to rethink the whole immigration thing. I myself am 100% in favor of LEGAL IMMIGRATION. My grandparents came here. Their names are on the wall at Ellis Island. We immigrated here, LEGALLY.

That's not what's going on today. We have millions of mexicans driven here by overpopulation. Overpopulation? Well, Mexico is a catholic country and they don't do that contraception stuff.

India is overpopulated. They did not take responsibility for their own fertility like the Chinese. Nope. They continue to overpopulate, and who is the lucky recipient of the overpopulated India and the MILLIONS of surplus Indians? We are. They come here and take OUR JOBS because they are overpopulated, and there are no jobs in India. Houses in New Delhi cost 5-6 million dollars. Overpopulation is stripping India of resources, but THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE MUST ABSORB THEIR SURPLUS POPULATION.

When will liberals wake up? We need jobs HERE for Americans, not Indians or Chinese or Mexicans.

As much as I dislike Dobbs, something needs to be done to curtail illegal immigration. It does negatively affect our country, and we need to do something now! Closing the border would be a good start. I also agree that this isn't a cons vs. liberal argument.

Posted by: bob z on October 26, 2009 at 10:22 AM | PERMALINK

I stopped watching CNN quite awhile ago because most of their on air staff is so conservative. Dobbs is the worst of the bunch. I don't know why CNN is trying to mimick FoxNews. They used to be good. MSNBC is the only cable news worth watching anymore.

Meantime, with 15 million Americans without jobs, & millions more under employed, the invasion continues, no Liberal Politician will address the 500 pound gorilla in the room, and millions of invading, plundering, welfare loving, prolific breeding, Illegal Aliens taking millions of jobs that should be American jobs and 100,s billions of dollars in social services that should be for American citizens!

One cannot be political correct and admit that Illegal Aliens are an large part of the problems in this Nation.

Their negative impact extends to every area from Sub-par loans & defaults, Underground economy, Massive document fraud, Lower standard of living, Crime, Overflowing prisons , Bankrupted hospitals, Failing schools, Property Taxes, Insurance costs, Environment, Culture, Welfare costs, Welfare fraud, SS fraud, Voter fraud, Disrespect for our laws & country, our Constitution against invasion and even Balance of payments occurring from oil and other imports to support the 20 to 30 million illegal aliens in this country!

One has to only look at Calif. which is basically mostly an Spanish speaking, Bankrupt state that cannot afford to provide Welfare, Schooling, Medical, Prison cells etc. for millions of MS-13 Gang bangers, Drug dealers, Rapist and other assorted Criminals and uneducated, Prolific breeding, third world rejects from Mexico!

In a very few years it will be impossible to see where Mexico ends and Calif. begins as both will be an third world cesspool!

Failure to secure our borders and reward the Invading horde for their invasion and their relatives in an never ending chain with American Citizenship is nothing less than committing National Suicide & will assure our future is an over populated Spanish speaking third world Nation that is an Cesspool of Corruption, Crime, Poverty and Misery modeled on Mexico!
