TUESDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers.
* Polling in New Jersey's gubernatorial campaign remains volatile. While a poll released yesterday showed Gov. Jon Corzine (D) up by nine, new surveys from Rasmussen and Public Policy Polling show Chris Christie (R) with narrow leads.
* Corzine conceded yesterday that if he had it to do over again, he would have re-worded his "threw his weight around" ad.
* In related news, with Republicans turning their guns on independent candidate Chris Daggett in New Jersey, Daggett's negative ratings have gone up sharply lately.
* In New York's 23rd, actor/politician Fred Thompson (R) has thrown his support to Conservative Party nominee Doug Hoffman. So has Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R).
* President Obama was in Miami last night, where he raised $1.5 million for Democratic House and Senate candidates.
* In Wisconsin, Lt. Gov. Barbara Lawton (D) announced yesterday that she is not running in next year's open gubernatorial race. The decision makes it more likely that Milwaukee Mayor Thomas Barrett will be the Democratic frontrunner, though he has not yet announced his plans.
* In Massachusetts, a Rasmussen poll shows Gov. Deval Patrick (D) with weak re-election numbers, but he nevertheless leads in a three-way contest. The poll has the incumbent ahead with 34% support, followed by Christy Mihos (R) and Tim Cahill (I) with 23% each.
* And in New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg's campaign is taking voter targeting efforts to new heights (or depths, depending on one's perspective).

Whether he wins or loses, Corzine's comments here ought to be required study for Democrats in how to handle the silly season questions from the teevee actors. He's given a question about his use of a metaphor in an ad which sparked some heat two weeks ago which has since died down. He gives a diplomatic-sounding non-apology ("well perhaps now in thinking it over, I should have used slightly different words") and suggests a tiny amount of embarrassment without actually saying so. In so doing, he manages to revive the image, the charge, and the phrase from two weeks ago, for another round of media coverage — without actually re-stating the charge.
If Corzine wins next Tuesday, it will be his fighting instinct that saves him.

Doug Hoffman, Conservative party candidate for Congressman in NY 23, went before a newspaper editorial board the other day and was thoroughly unfamiliar with the local issues of that Congressional District. But he had the ex-Republican Majority Leader Dick Armey from Washington, D.C. with him to complain that the editorial board shouldn't be asking those "parochial questions."
Now Hoffman gets ex-Senator Fred Thompson from Hollywood and Governor Tim Pawlenty from Minnesota to fly in and bolster his sagging campaign against the real Republican Party's candidate in the race. I wonder if he even asked for all that high-powered out-of-state Republican help, or if he is just sitting around waiting for orders from the national party leadership about what to have for breakfast before he goes out and follows the daily schedule they have faxed him him from Washington.
Do the Republican voters of NY-23 have any idea who he will really represent if they elect this carpetbagging puppet to Congress. It sure won't be the voters of district 23.
