PRESIDENT HONORS TROOPS, CHENEY ATTACKS PRESIDENT.... President Obama paid his respects to fallen U.S. soldiers yesterday at Dover Air Force, as flag-draped coffins returned home from Afghanistan. Even some of the president's conservative detractors were willing to show some decency -- National Review's Peter Hegseth, for example, called it "a classy move." A blog called Right Wing Nut House added, "[T]he emotion that animated [Obama's] face during this solemn, heart rending ceremony showed that he understands his responsibilities."

Some right-wing voices were far less gracious.

Liz Cheney called out President Obama for his early-morning trip to honor fallen soldiers arriving at Dover Air Force Base yesterday, suggesting President Bush honored America's heroes with a bit more class than his successor.

Cheney, on Fox News Radio's John Gibson Show yesterday: "I think that what President Bush used to do is do it without the cameras. And I don't understand sort of showing up with the White House Press Pool with photographers and asking family members if you can take pictures. That's really hard for me to get my head around.... It was a surprising way for the president to choose to do this."

Actually, what's surprising is how pathetic Liz Cheney's sense of decency has become.

President Bush didn't used to "do it without the cameras"; President Bush didn't used to do it at all. After seven years of the war in Afghanistan, Bush didn't greet returning caskets once. He didn't even want journalists to take photographs of the events, fearing that the images may turn public opinion against the war.

What's more, President Obama didn't "show up with the White House Press Pool." The trip was not announced in advance -- the White House wasn't seeking publicity -- and only a "small contingent" of journalists were allowed to attend. In fact, "most of the event was closed to media."

Most of the right simply ignored the president's appearance at Dover. Limbaugh didn't mention it, and while "Fox & Friends" managed to mention ACORN 23 times during yesterday's program, the inane hosts somehow neglected to mention the Dover event altogether.

Of course, given a choice between right-wing silence and Liz Cheney's contemptible sleaze, I'll take the former.

What does Jenna Bush think about it? What does Chelsea Clinton think about it? How about Al Gore's daughters and Amy Carter? What does Tricia Nixon think about it? Did Dan Quayle have a daughter? What does she think about it?

Sheesh. Why anyone gives this idiot air time is beyond me.

To be somewhat fair to Liz Cheney (I pray I never say that again), it doesn't matter if "most of the vent was closed to the media." All it takes is one reporter and/or one photographer to document the event, and it can be reported - and discussed - everywhere. Just because it's not the entire White House Press Pool doesn't mean that the entire media didn't pick up on it.

Going back to doing the right thing, which is calling all the Cheneys douche bags, I guess the new right-wing meme is that Bush did all sort of WONDERFUL things when no one in the media was around to cover it. In fact, Bush caught bin Laden and killed him hisself, but we don't know it. Why? No cameras. He also solved the budget crisis and removed all the weapons of mass destruction from Iraq when we weren't looking.

There's a special ring in Hell reserved for the Cheneys, forced to play charades with Hitler, Saddam Hussein & Vlad the Impaler without an interpreter.

He has unveiled the truth. And they would have wanted to be honored too, just as they wanted to be coming home from Vietnam, where the caskets were never hidden. The open access then (esp. to the jounalists), along with Walter Cronkite's death toll count every week was as instrumental for the eventual sentiment that ended *that* war as all of the war protests combined.

Just more complaints du jour. It won't end.

The worst possible thing I can find to say about Obama's attendance that is that it reminds people that war isn't about flashy graphics but about young men and women coming home in boxes.

Maybe it's a subtle way to show the indecency of neoclan "surge" cheerleading.

Actually, what's surprising is how pathetic Liz Cheney's sense of decency has become.

Even more surprising is the idea that you thought she ever had a sense of decency. Obama wakes up in the morning; Cheney attacks. It's automatic.

Obama has more class and integrity in his left foot than does the whole Cheney clan.

A small contingent of media at Dover with Obama? Try two dozen. Can you say, "Lights, cameras, action!" Of course David Axelrod can.

From ABC News:

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2009/10/military-families-visiting-dover-statistics.html

"Last night, there were 24 media representatives at Dover from 14 news agencies."

Most of the event was closed to the media because the other 17 families didn't want their loved ones to be exploited by Obama and the media.

Posted by: Kristinn on October 30, 2009 at 12:45 PM | PERMALINK

President Bush didn't used to "do it without the cameras"; President Bush didn't used to do it all.

Rush just reported that he did (based on Cheney's comment no doubt) so he must have.

I am soooooo sick of them.

If Lizzie is such a patriot, then she should do the right thing and enlist. What a sorry piece of trash.

Posted by: Steve on October 30, 2009 at 1:01 PM | PERMALINK

In Bizarro Bush World, where the Cheneys still live, it's unpatriotic to honor the fallen by reading their names on the air, unpatriotic to show their flag-draped caskets returning, and unpatriotic for the President to attend their funerals or show any display of respect for them.

What IS patriotic? Pretending that the war is going quickly, easily and bloodlessly, no matter what the evidence to the contrary, and hoping that your believing that will make it true.

Posted by: T-Rex on October 30, 2009 at 1:03 PM | PERMALINK

The American people deserve to see their Commander In Chief honoring fallen troops in a time of war. I'm sorry right-wingers have a problem with that.

And no president in history used soldiers as props more than George W. Bush, so please spare us the faux outrage.

Didn't Ronald Reagan go to Dover to be there when the dead Marines were brought back from Lebanon in 1983? Didn't he do it in the daytime with Nancy at his side and the entire White House press corps with live coverage?

Where was Liz Cheney then? In her Borg alcove regenerating?

Posted by: Mustang Bobby on October 30, 2009 at 1:13 PM | PERMALINK

The Cheney clan is rude! Poor Liz, what will she do when her last name becomes synonymous with dastardly deeds done by derelictic miscreants! Yes, Liz will be very uncomfortable when she hears an anonymous voice in the crowd say something like, "Oh Cheney, I forgot my luggage," or "Cheney Off and die!" or What the Cheney do you think you're doing (abbreviated as WTC).

I do have a place in my heart that will empathize with poor ol'Liz when she realizes her name is a common epithet hurled insultingly among the disgruntled, and even among good upstanding citizens, here in America well into the forseeable future! -Kevo

Again, you progressives fail to understand the basics.

To honor our fallen war veterans, the appropriate method is to ignore them and pretend that deaths did not happen. To honor those who have served and been wounded the appropriate method is to let the VA hospitals fall into disrepair. To honor those who served and returned without physical wounds, the appropriate method is to ignore them and pretend that no physical wounds means that everything is A-Ok with them.

Re an article on DU today, the right wing is apparently on a master plan to defund the democratic party and the attacks on acorn are just a part of it. Therefore we must all work on getting acorn funded again as they bring out the vote for democrats.

Another funny piece of trivia today - the Dick Cheney family own Picassos, but hide them to protect the grandchildren!!!!!! Ha

Where is Mary the Lesbian Daughter/Sister and out of wedlock Mother in all of this? Doesn't this family stick together in all their opinions? Where is the "news media" in tracking down her opinions? Kristin,

What exactly is Obama exploiting? As far as I could tell by the coverage, it was about the fallen, not the president.

It's not like this is the first a president in the television era was shown honoring Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice.

And lastly, that ABC article you linked was rather interesting, because it stated:

"Their (the military families') presence reflects another change that occurred when the Pentagon lifted the ban on media coverage at Dover this past April, the Pentagon would now pay for the travel and lodging for families that chose to be on hand when their loved ones returned to Dover."

So not only can we Americans see the return of our fallen men and women, but their families can be there when they come back to the States.

Sounds like an obligation to these families that's been long-overdue.

Actually, Kristin, the Bush administration actually went out of their way to prevent families from even accessing Dover or permitting them from viewing the returning caskets of their loved ones. Talk about classless behavior.
Bush also didn't want pictures taken because he didn't want anyone to be reminded of the human toll of his completely unnecessary war of choice in Iraq. Obama doesn't believe in sweeping it under the rug, but gives families the option of having photos taken.
Obama also believes that it's completely appropriate for a CiC to appear at the return of those who were killed serving their country. Bush and Cheney had other priorities.

Bottom line--
Obama=Class
Liz Cheney=irrelevant scum

Might, not may.

Posted by: Forrest on October 30, 2009 at 3:27 PM | PERMALINK

I enjoy bashing Bush as much as anyone, but I think it's only fair to point out that he did meet with families of slain soldiers. I can't say how often, but my understanding is that he did it regularly. You can google up contemporary news reports fairly easily, but it's harder to find photos, because reporters were excluded from these meetings. This I suspect is what Liz Cheney is talking about. I believe that Bush was absolutely wrong about the Iraq war, but I don't think it's fair to claim that he was unwilling to face the human consequences of his decisions. On the other hand, I'm not sure you can say the same for Cheney.

Posted by: Borden Tarde on October 30, 2009 at 3:51 PM | PERMALINK

The American people have the right, duty even, to see the consequences of our actions. Any one, especially a Cheney, who is telling you otherwise has an agenda.

This is another part of Ms. Cheney's statement that is a flat-out-lie:

And I don't understand sort of showing up with the White House Press Pool with photographers and asking family members if you can take pictures.

The families made their decision on whether to allow cameras before they were told that the president was going to be there, and no one asked them to reconsider those decisions.

I guess it's not surprising that a sleazebag like Liz Cheney assumes that all administrations act as much like bullies as her father's did...
