A POLL LIKE NO OTHER.... As regular readers know, most national polls from major news outlets are interesting for their results. Fox News polls are interesting for their questions. Most reputable news outlets try to maintain a degree of seriousness with their poll questions. Fox News prefers to add a little panache to their surveys.
The network's latest (pdf) doesn't disappoint. It asks, for example, "Who do you think is more determined to win the war in Afghanistan -- President Obama or the leaders of the Taliban and al Qaeda?" As Dave Weigel noted, "I tried to cross-reference this with the way Fox News asked the question during the Bush administration's seven years of muddling through in Afghanistan. Surprisingly, it never got asked."
Fox News also asked a number of questions about the White House saying mean things about Fox News. And wouldn't you know it, Fox News' poll found that a majority of respondents believe Fox News is "right in this debate." Imagine that. Greg Sargent added, "This is not the first time Fox has polled on its own confrontation with the White House, either. Legit news outlet Fox News is happy to continue making itself the story. Would you ever see MSNBC indulge in this sort of thing?"
But there was one legitimate question in the poll that offered a result the network surely didn't care for.
"Who do you think is more responsible for the current state of the economy -- President Barack Obama or former President George W. Bush?"
A clear 58% majority consider Bush more responsible for the country's economic difficulties, while only 18% blame Obama. Among self-identified independents, it was an even larger margin -- 59% blame Bush, while 11% believe Obama is more responsible.
Even 29% of Republicans consider Bush more responsible.
I don't imagine that'll get a lot of airtime on the network.

I'm sure Fox is not concerned. It just shows that they have more work to do on that issue.

I like the party breakdown. 40/37 Democrat/Republican. Imagine if they had given the GOP the 19% weight that real polls show them as having.

The next poll with have the language clarified for a more accurate result.
"Who do you think is more responsible for the current state of the economy -- President Barack Obama, the socialist who wants to punish entrepeneurs and destroy the free market or former President George W. Bush, who kept America safe after Bill Clinton's appeasement towards terrorists led to 9/11 ?"

Poll numbers like that are why the right wing media is engaged in a massive and coordinated effort to pressure, intimidate, shame, or embarass Obama and liberals to assume complete responsibility for EVERYTHING and to stop blaming ANYTHING on Bush. Charles Krauthammer offers another installment into this meme in today's Post.
Two things can be said about this. First, the entire effort by the Radical Right to paint Obama as a radical socialist, communist, fascist dicator is completely undermined by the fact that the major stimulus, bailout and government spending programs under Obama have been emergency responses to a crisis created by his predacessor. The Right needs to get folks to forget about Bush so that they can get their narrative to stick that all this government spending under Obama is because he is just your typical tax and spend liberal.
Two: the idea that Obama should stop, less than a year after taking office, from pointing out the fact that most of his problems are inherited from Bush is complete nonsense when you consider how regularly Bush blamed his woes on Clinton -- almost to the his last day in office!
I know, I know, pointing out the hypocrisy of the right is like shooting fish in a barrel, but I had to say it anyway.

That is a terrible question. I consider Bush responsible for the economic downturn, and Obama mostly responsible for it not being worse and for it starting to recover. So they are both responsible, one entirely via negative contributions, and the other in much more positive ways.
