THURSDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:
* A stunning tragedy: "Eleven people plus an attacker were killed and 31 were wounded after a gunman opened fire at Fort Hood in Texas on Thursday, a Fort Hood spokesman said. The gunman was a soldier, and two other soldiers have been detained as suspects, said the spokesman, Lt. Gen. Bob Cone. Officials said they believe three gunmen were involved. At least two of the gunmen wore military uniforms, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said. One of the shooters has been apprehended, Fort Hood spokesman Sgt. Maj. Jamie Posten told CNN."
* President Obama addressed the shooting this afternoon, calling the incident "a horrific outburst of violence." He added, "These are men and women who made the selfless and courageous decision" to risk their lives in the service of the nation. "It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an Army base on American soil."
* Congress approved an extension of unemployment benefits today, as well as the home-buyer tax credit. President Obama is expected to sign them into law tomorrow.
* A dozen right-wing protestors refused to leave Speaker Pelosi's congressional office and were arrested.
* The phrase of the day at the Tea Party rally at the Capitol seemed to be "Kill the bill." Even now, I'm still not quite sure what it is about health care reform these folks hate so much.
* Nice to see retail sales have a fairly strong month, posting the retailing industry's best performance in more than a year.
* Despite a ridiculous "boycott" of the proceedings, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee approved its climate bill today, on 10 to 1 vote.
* Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will apparently not seek another term in office, an announcement that will add additional disarray to the already chaotic Palestinian political system.
* House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) vowed unanimous opposition to health care reform from the House Republican caucus.
* The American Center Society joined the AMA and the AARP in endorsing the House health care reform bill.
* Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani's former police commissioner and George W. Bush's one-time choice to head the Department of Homeland Security, is headed for prison.
* President Obama hosted a White House Tribal Nations Conference today, which included leaders from 564 federally recognized tribes.
* It's not a good time to subsidize rich kids' educations.
* Immunity for prosecutors who frame innocent men for murder? I hope not.
* If Republicans were to reclaim the House majority, I suspect the calls for baseless presidential impeachment would get pretty loud.
* And Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) talks about how she starts her day: "The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning out of bed, I grab my cell phone and I look to RedState ... and I feel like I at least am kind of prepared to get out of bed, and then I go read the editorial page of Investors Business Daily or the Wall Street Journal for a wider background of knowledge for the day... I just find it is one of the most credible sources of information out there." I think she's serious.
Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

I think it's worth noting that our good buddy Max Baucus is the single Dem on the committee who voted against the bill.
This guy is the gift that keeps on giving.

Gosh, if only people were allowed to carry weapons on military bases, then none of this would have happened....

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will apparently not seek another term in office, an announcement that will add additional disarray to the already chaotic Palestinian political system.
Uh, yeah, disarray caused primarily by the Zionists who are holding most of the members of the Palestinian parliament as political prisoners.

You "suspect" calls for impeachment will get loud? If the Repukes take control of the House next November, I expect articles of impeachment to be introduced no later March of 2011. That's how the Traitor-Republican Party rolls.

This Max Baucus thing is such a classic that I thought it worth following up --
Here's a quote from the MSNBC article (emphasis mine):
"Baucus specifically cited the [climate] bill's call for a 20 percent reduction in greenhouse gases by 2020. He said he would like to see that target lowered to 17 percent, with a trigger to raise it to 20 percent if other countries adopted similar measures.
'I am going work to get climate legislation that can get 60 votes through the U.S. Senate and signed into law,' Baucus said."
Max seems to like triggers in and super-majorities for all of his favorite legislation. At least he's consistent.

When I first read this sentence:
"House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) vowed unanimous opposition to health care reform from the House Republican caucus"
I thought the last word was "circus."
Then I realized what it actually said.
But I still think my first take was the more accurate one.

One more thing - some parent from Brooklyn was complaining recently about how they couldn't get H1N1 vac for their kid.
Well, it's now being reported that Wall Street firms were handed out vacs; eg, Goldman Sux got as many shots to distribute to their employees as various hospitals got to distribute to people in need.

Disputo : You know full well that most of the people on a military base are unarmed. The guns are stored in a thing they call an armory..
They busted two other people too but we're not sure what their role in the shooting was yet (I live in texas and my mom works at Metroplex which is basically across the street)..

OXYMORON, Will Robinson, OXYMORON
Any sentence having Rupert Murdoch( owner of WSJ) and credible source of information does not compute Will Robinson. Beware of messengers spreading obvious falsehoods Will Robinson.
Avoid Michelle Bachman Will Robinson. She wants to kill you, Will Robinson!

The horror in Texas has overshadowed the insane Teabagging crap in DC today.
The shooting victims will receive the best medical care our planet has to offer.
In DC we hear Healthcare reform as being tantamount to terrorism.
We have some major soul-searching ahead as we digest the horrors at Ft. Hood. What did these people die for?
Maybe healthcare for all isn't such a bad idea after all.

On the prosecutors, no one is looking at simple errors or unwitting accomplices to a frame-up. Those are the GOP straw men similar to the Welfare Queens and tort reform peddle points. No, what we have here is an intentional framing of someone, and it is more pervasive than you think. The San Jose Mercury News ran a series called Stolen Trials, Tainted Justice [if I remember the title properly] over a couple of months this summer. In short, everyone should read it and realize that if we have this many problems in one county in California, it's a huge problem everywhere. Why else did Illinois close their death row?
In most cases it is sheer laziness in investigation coupled with the self-imposed urgency to "solve" it by any way possible. I served on a jury for DUI trial where the critical testimony of the security guard who witnessed the driver driving drunk (the cops didn't show up until a couple of hours later), which would have guaranteed a conviction vote from me, was never presented at trial by the guard. It was hearsay at best, and we found out afterward that the prosecutor decided not to bring the guard back from Louisiana to testify. So, instead of the eyewitness that put the driver in the car in that state of silliness, we got innuendos about (maybe) a girlfriend, to the point of wondering why the guy's wife wasn't in court, several highly circumstantial possible links, and the case was so bad that when the prosecution rested, we all looked at each other and thought "this is it?". We took alomost 15 minutes to acquit, because I wanted to be sure all jurors put their ideas on the table in deliberations.
That's why we have presumption of innocence. That's why a prosecutor should look for justice, not "winning", which is what their oath calls for, btw. What we frequently have here is ambition for public office, and nothing burnishes a political resume like having the rep as a crime fighter, just ask the new Gov for NJ.
So, while there are lots of bad folks out there, the first law of dirtballs is that you'll always have another shot. And do the investigation thoroughly. detain them while you check out the excuses (something else not done by the police - they claimed they'd get hit with an illegal search even though the suspect told them what to look for and where the item was. IANAL, but if you have the cause to search for a specific item pointed out, and you see something else, you can go back for a warrant on the something else)
And, France has an excellent law on their books. When a prosecutor commits abuse that is intentional, and it is discovered, the prosecutor gets to serve the time the defendant(s) had to serve, day for day. We need that here.

Your question: The phrase of the day at the Tea Party rally at the Capitol seemed to be "Kill the bill." Even now, I'm still not quite sure what it is about health care reform these folks hate so much.
My answer: They've got insurance (many are no doubt on Medicare, which they want the government to keep its hands off of), and their message to those with no insurance -- learned from Dick Cheney -- is, "Go f*#k yourself!"
Posted by: CMcC on November 5, 2009 at 7:28 PM | PERMALINK
Even now, I'm still not quite sure what it is about health care reform these folks hate so much.
Well, from the folks I've spoken/typed to that are against it, there are basically three things:
1. They think it'll cost them money because they have no clue what the bill actually says.
2. They're young and/or healthy and don't see how it affects them.
3. They don't want to help people they consider poor by choice and/or Not Like Them.
In ever case, however, I just reply with a simple question: What about basic human decency?
Because this thing isn't about some vague policy. It's about real human lives that are being destroyed because they don't have the money ... or an insurance company that drops them when they need it most ... or they lose it after they're laid off.
And. They. Don't. Care.
They really don't.

CBS News had a segment claiming that the wins by the Republicans in the gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey mean that the Democrats should scale back healthcare reform. They had Congressman Gene Taylor (D-MS) saying:
"I think it's very fair to say that Virginia is a bellwether state, and the Democratic leadership ought to be paying attention to what happened in Virginia"
Gee, and here I thought the wins by the Democrats in the two congressional races is what the House Democratic leadership ought to be paying attention to ?

Tom Nicholson, this Muslim nutjob has never been deployed. He is not suffering from PTSD. He is suffering from SJS.
Northzax, the nutjob that murdered and injured these U.S. soldiers is a Muslim, not a Christian. He was mad because Obama hadn't ended this "illegal war" quickly enough, and he didn't want to be deployed. (Why are you denizens of the "reality based community" always so unaware of reality?)

@shortstop: I'm not sure why it surprised me that it was an officer, it just did. That was what I was (obviously not very clearly) trying to say. How often is it officers that take shots at fellow soldiers--seems like it's usually the enlisted that snap. And, no, I'm not trying to make a socioeconomic (or otherwise) judgement, I'm just saying that out of all of the incidents that spring to mind it was an enlisted guy who did the shooting.

My daughter the nursing student asked this;
If those soldiers were graduating from training to go to Iraq or Afghanistan, why was it that they didn't run towards the shooter and mob him rather than run away and get mowed down in droves?
We spend thousands of dollars to send this guy through college, a masters degree and six years doctors degree and this is what we get?
Maybe it is time this country had a draft.

For 2010 it is really, really important to start gear up political operations now in every district targetted by the Repigs and start a counter-attack now, not in 6 months. By then it will be too late as the media will have their memes and minds will be made-up. The Republican Party is an enemy of the country. This is a war against reactionary crazies and it needs to be treated as such. No compromise. No quarter.

I agree. The other link that I posted was a Science paper from last week. But lots of the "data" and "peer reviewed" reports that support AGW are at least as severely limited as that list.
