BEST. PARODY. EVER.... There's not a whole lot to be cheery about this morning, so perhaps a little laughter is in order.

Jon Stewart did a parody of Glenn Beck on last night's "The Daily Show" that may be one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Stewart is known for being a quick-witted interviewer, and an underrated stand-up comedian, but let's not overlook his acting chops. This was truly brilliant.

as the gyre widens and finally disappears, it's good to know: there will always be teevee...

But he's not nearly as good at the fake crying as the real Glen Beck is.

Jon continues to do BRILLIANT work even as Matthews/Blitzer/Faux News embarrass themselves on a daily basis. Yesterday's opininating/speculating during the hours BEFORE actual facts were known about the Ft. Hood shootings are just another example of how poorly we are served. But they gave lots of ammunition to the WINGNUT CRAZIES out there that will now continue their hateful rants (and worse) about this president and all people NOT WHITE and CONSERVATIVE!!!

Posted by: Dancer on November 6, 2009 at 9:20 AM | PERMALINK

As outlandish as that was, it's not nearly as crazy as the real Beck. And I don't even see him that often but the rant about OnStar transmitting secret info TO THE GOVERNMENT (!!!) was one of the nuttiest things I've ever seen on telvision.

Still - the mannerisms, the smary tone, the sobby emotion, the hand gestures, the all round creepiness of the Beck paranoia - that was brilliant.

He's brilliant and he's not even Irish!

A sad sad commentary on the state of our media. Beck is far sicker than his internal organs are allowing. He and his ilk are the barometer of what is ailing our Republic and sending it into it's not too distant death rattle as a Third Worldish country.
Be aware, be very aware...

Stunned dumb...

Pure polished genius. I'm in awe.

The master at work.

Perhaps the greatest performance of all time.

Posted by: ComradeAnon on November 6, 2009 at 9:48 AM | PERMALINK

Great parody. Unfortunately it simply gets dismissed by the phoney ultra sensitive wingnuts because it's Jon Stewart, the liberal biased wingnut.

Posted by: Dave on November 6, 2009 at 9:59 AM | PERMALINK

My very, very favoritest part of the whole thing (not withstanding Jon's overall brilliance, of course) was the label on the stomach of the "diagram": Photosynthesis (?).

Posted by: colleeniem on November 6, 2009 at 10:02 AM | PERMALINK

Absolutely brilliant!

But as long as we are going to engage in conspiracy theories, how about the possibilty that Beck's appendix is fine. Maybe he just went off his meds and freaked out when his boy Hoffmann lost in NY23 on Tuesday?

Posted by: MW on November 6, 2009 at 10:03 AM | PERMALINK

Jon Stewart was in one of my favorite dorky movies, with Gillian Anderson "Playing by Heart" and was adorable, as usual.

Posted by: MissMudd on November 6, 2009 at 10:08 AM | PERMALINK

Sweet. Love JS - he is the master of telling it like it is and doing it brilliantly. Keep it up and keep us laughing all the way to the voting booths.

let's not overlook his acting chops

He's usually the first to reference Death to Smoochy when his acting career comes up in conversation, although even Meryl Streep can only do so much with crappy scripts.

But yes, I loved this, and we shouldn't dismiss how painful it must have been for him to research the part ;)

Posted by: latts on November 6, 2009 at 10:19 AM | PERMALINK

I have never watched more than a minute or two of Beck at a time, so some of Stewart's nuances puzzled me at first, but as he kept going it all sort of fell into place. Oh. My. Goodness.

Posted by: docdave on November 6, 2009 at 10:27 AM | PERMALINK

F***ing brilliant!! As long as Jon is still on the air, there's hope for this country.

Posted by: kangaroojack on November 6, 2009 at 10:29 AM | PERMALINK

Stewart is actually a pretty mediocre actor, which is what made the parody of such a bad actor (and we all know Beck is an act) so incredibly spot-on.

And I agree with latts--every time we paused the tv so we could laugh and not miss anything last night, I cringed just a little for how much Beck he must have had to internalize to pull it off. That poor man. Good thing they have Fridays off.

Did you ever look at the back of a dollar bill....ON WEED?

Posted by: doubtful on November 6, 2009 at 10:35 AM | PERMALINK

I'm with Tess...the fact that Stewart couldn't help giggling repeatedly while he was doing this makes him not-such-a-great actor, but it does make the parody somehow even better.

Or maybe the suppressed laughter IS intentional and he's a better actor than I think?....And if an actor can pretend to laugh on GOVERNMENT CONTROLLED television while making fun of Glenn Beck's hemorrhoids, then where will it stop, I ask you?

Posted by: PQuincy on November 6, 2009 at 10:53 AM | PERMALINK

Steve, that was one of the sharpest parodies I've heard since Stan Freberg. Thanks.

Posted by: Balakirev on November 6, 2009 at 11:19 AM | PERMALINK

Leave Glenn Beck alone!!!!

Posted by: Scott F. on November 6, 2009 at 11:20 AM | PERMALINK

Glenn Beck has a point, you know. His hemmorroid surgery was not successful at all. You can still see it, sticking up right there on top.

Posted by: getplaning on November 6, 2009 at 11:23 AM | PERMALINK

What's the difference between conservatives enjoying Glenn Beck's sharp analyses and the fringe left falling all over Jon Stewart in adoration?

You call us cultists but you act like a mediocre Jewish comedian from Jersey is Jesus.

Posted by: Myke K on November 6, 2009 at 11:59 AM | PERMALINK

I thought the suppressed laughter, or at least the mannerism, was also part of the act. I haven't watched much Beck (and what I've seen has all been second-hand, mostly TDS and Colbert), but he also does that thing where he suddenly stops, turns slightly, and presses his hand to his mouth. Beck usually plays it as if something he's just said has upset or moved him, but perhaps he really is suppressing laughter.

Now that's a thought - top of the Amazon list in 2011, Glenn Beck's "How I Did It: Secrets of America's Longest-Running Performance Artist".

Posted by: Ken on November 6, 2009 at 11:59 AM | PERMALINK

Stewart was not supressing giggles. That was pure Beck. Beck is always doing that schtick as if he is so overcome with emotion he is fighting back tears.

PLEASE tell me this is more parody! =0

It is, Jim. Myke is parodying one of our occasional wingnut visitors, Mike K.

Posted by: PaulB on November 6, 2009 at 12:26 PM | PERMALINK

"a mediocre Jewish comedian from Jersey is Jesus"

Lets see...
Stewart is Jewish
Jesus was Jewish

Jesus will return
Stewart will be back
[after these messages]

Do ya think?
Could it be?

Posted by: Mr DeBakey on November 6, 2009 at 12:29 PM | PERMALINK

Yeah, I was struck by how well Stewart kept in character and straight-faced -- he usually breaks up (think of the tosses to Colbert and most bits with John Oliver; Stewart starts laughing first). So I didn't think he was giggling; he was doing a signature Beck gesture, the pause for composure.

Posted by: FlipYrWhig on November 6, 2009 at 2:12 PM | PERMALINK

Jon was priceless, the stuff on the chalkboard was hilarious. Colbert is also a master of mocking Beck and better at the fake crying than Stewart. These guys are so needed when we need to keep our sanity in the face of madness.

Posted by: Hmmmm on November 6, 2009 at 2:12 PM | PERMALINK

I believe there is a larger, more sinister, conspiracy at work here. Rush Limbaugh had boils on his butt, which kept him from following through on his burning desire to fight in the jungles of Vietnam. The authorities might tell you there's no connection between boils on one republican ass and 'roids on (or in) another, but that is what they wan't you think. I see a government effort to silence two of the most articulate voices of America by making it impossible for two republican asses to sit on their asses and spew hatred all day. Crazy, you say? Remember those exploding cigars they tried to give Castro?

DeBakey, I wish I weren't laughing so hard so that I could type this without having to go back to correct typos. That was great!!!!

I liked the "Purity of Essence" nod to Dr. Strangelove.

So apropos.
