WEDNESDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:
* Advising President Obama on Afghanistan, Gates, Clinton, and Mullen favor 30,000 or more additional U.S. troops, but there are still some disagreements between them: "Officials said that while Admiral Mullen and Mrs. Clinton were generally in sync with Mr. Gates in supporting an option of about 30,000 troops, there were variations in their positions and they were not working in lock step."
* Felix Salmon takes a closer look at Sen. Chris Dodd's (D-Conn.) proposed financial regulatory reform proposal. In general, it's a positive review.
* Tell me again why ACORN is a bigger deal that this? "Top executives at Blackwater Worldwide authorized secret payments of about $1 million to Iraqi officials that were intended to silence their criticism and buy their support after a September 2007 episode in which Blackwater security guards fatally shot 17 Iraqi civilians in Baghdad, according to former company officials."
* Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Pat Leahy (D-Vt.) certainly sounds open to giving Lieberman the boot: "Let's see what happens. I don't think anybody should be filibustering -- nobody should be filibustering health care. Either vote it up or vote it down."
* A tragic story of a Greek Orthodox priest, visiting the U.S., who got lost in Tampa. He asked Marine reservist Jasen D. Bruce for directions, and Bruce allegedly beat him with a tire iron, suspecting the priest of being an Islamic terrorist.
* The Anti-Defamation league isn't happy with Republican officials' tolerance of right-wing activists and their misuse of Holocaust imagery.
* The new GI Bill and how it helps.
* The American Medical Association now opposes the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, has officially criticized gay marriage bans for contributing to health disparities, and endorsed additional medical research involving marijuana.
* Melody Barnes, who oversees President Obama's Domestic Policy Council, publicly endorsed gay marriage at an event Boston College's School of Law.
* How ridiculous was Sarah Palin's "In God We Trust" allegation? Even Fox News concedes she's wrong.
* Pat Garafalo did a nice job putting together a side-by-side comparison of the two congressional bills on financial re-regulation.
* Sean Hannity tries to fool his audience. Jon Stewart notices.
* Bill O'Reilly conceded last night that the United States "can't kill all the Muslims" -- so the country should simply try to win hearts and minds. Oh my.
* Fox cancelled "Dollhouse" today.
* Even a decade later, Limbaugh revels in attacking Bill Clinton.
* It seems that Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) is getting dumber as times goes on.
* I'm hard pressed to imagine why anyone would pay Condoleezza Rice and Stephen Hadley for advice on any subject.
* And to those who wear, have worn, or will wear the uniform, Happy Veterans Day.
Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

ACORN helps dark people. That make Baby Jesus weep bitter tears.
Blackwater kills dark people. That makes Baby Jesus smile.
I hope this has been helpful.

Here's an opinion piece in my hometown paper on the health care reform bills:

I found it to be singularly impressive distillation of the debate.

Purely for entertainment: another Republican official has trouble with sexual boundaries and issues of control.
The Anti-Defamation league isn't happy with Republican officials' tolerance of right-wing activists and their misuse of Holocaust imagery.
Nice of them to wake the eff up. They were silent all summer about the townhalls while the Southern Poverty Law Center did the heavy lifting. Guess it had to get pretty bad before the ADL felt it reached the level of Dick Durbin's innocuous statement of a couple years back.

Camille Paglia is the bizarro poster child for Steve's blog. She falls for every single Republican shill-meme that Steve is constantly warning against. If you look up "wrong" in wikipedia there's a picture of Paglia.

Continuing the Af-Pak War is an egregious decision on the part of the Obama administration. They might not all be lock steppin' but they are all goose steppin' -- there is no military strategy that 'wins' this situation.
Regional leaders need to help organize an internal settlement of differences -- a diplomatic solution advocated by experts on the region for years. Pity the Obama admin is as deaf to this as BushCo was...and i caint understand why...

Nobody cares about Blackwater because last time I checked America was a free country where businesses could make an honest buck. It's called "free enterprise," people. Also, the people they killed were dark-skinned.

Instead of writing Happy Veterans Day it should be written "Thanks for your service." There was nothing "happy" about being in a wartime theater or going to war.
Great blog/website!! Keep up the good work.

from Wikipedia:
'A spokesperson told The Hartford Courant in 1994 that Lieberman received an educational deferment from the Vietnam War draft when he was an undergraduate and law student from 1960 to 1967. Upon graduating from law school at age 25, Lieberman qualified for a family deferment because he was already married and had one child, Matt.'
For Lieberman, no congratulations on this Veteran's Day. No Thanks needed for a wiggling, slithering, draft deferred, Republicrat, lawyering, termite mound sucking, representative of all that's wrong with American politics.

Tell me again why ACORN is a bigger deal that this?
ACORN, supposedly, was a non-partisan group that received federal funding. It turns out that it was overwhelmingly supporting Democrats and overwhelmingly corrupt and slated to help with the census. It was also caught with its pants down: helping undercover reporters dressed as a pimp and an underage prostitute.
I can only imagine the "help" they gave low-income earners on their tax forms and their mortgage forms - not to mention their voter registration records.
All of this while receiving a heaping of federal aid.
Blackwater is a private company that receives no federal aid.
Tell me why Blackwater is lumped in with ACORN?

Only if you exclude the billion+ dollars in mostly no-bid contracts that Blackwater received from the US gov. Our tax dollars at work.

Thanks, PaminBB, @19:48.
It's "funny"... I anticipated Jayson's blandly misleading "angle" (without knowing who'd offer it) and had the same answer. Even *now* the State Dept (supported by the taxpayers' money) is employing Xe and funnelling our bucks to its (Prince-ly) coffers, with no free-market bidding war in sight...
Jay, son... You're all wet. Perhaps a diaper change would help?

* A tragic story of a Greek Orthodox priest [...] -- Steve Benen
Well... They all look the same -- lots of hair and and funny, sissy (long bathrobes), clothes. And, if you ever heard them, their mournful howls (aka chants) are very much alike, too. How's a true -- Fox Mews fed -- American to know the difference?

On ACORN vs. Blackwater -- why indeed, why indeed. Both of my senators here in New Mexico voted to defund ACORN. I have written responses from both of them explaining their support of "Defund ACORN" with platitudes about spending federal money on agencies accused of serious malfeasance. !!! No letters, emails, or phone calls to their offices, asking why they do not apply the standard to Blackwater or Wackenhut has yielded a coherent answer.

You lose, disputo. Late breaking news is that the Big O sent everybody back to the drawing board. And it comes out that our ambassador to Afghanistan was strongly opposed to sending any more troops under current conditions there. (Speculation is that he means Karzai is just plain crazy. As in mentally ill.)

Okay - I'm getting a jump on tomorrow.
So Lou Dobbs has left CNN. Which do you think will happen: He shows up on FOX News as an anchor, he shows up on FOX News as an "expert", or he shows up on FOX News because he becomes a Republican politician?
Either way, methinks CNN just got a whole lot better.

About time. Elie Wiesel used to go ballistic if one dared to compare the Holocaust to the Cambodian killing fields or the Armenian genocide. Now the R's get to routinely compare the holocaust to health care - go figure.
Herr Schicklegruber originally picked “National Socialism” as a marketing ruse to compete with International Socialism, even though he was selling something completely different. It was always sort of a transparent ploy that only fooled the weak minded. Interesting how it is more effective today than it was in the 1930’s.

Hey, something I can comment on with some knowledge:
Dollhouse was, unfortunately, not very good at all. I had to give up on it two episodes into the second season. If it hadn't been a Joss Whedon show, I couldn't have been forced to watch more than four episodes.
It didn't make much sense, the characters were lifeless, the dialogue did not have the wit Whedon has brought to his other shows. None of it was up to Whedon's par, or at all close to it. Fox probably gave it longer than they should have, I suspect as a make-up call for Firefly. Too bad Joss couldn't make more of it.

Some of the News
That may be True
LOU DOBBS TO QUIT CNN
Late night comics may joke about Dobbs pursuing a new career at a Mexican TV station, but this is not so. The truth is that just after the first of the year Lou Dobbs and Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio will begin a nationwide speaking tour.

Jayson, are you saying that Blackwater received NO federal aid???!!! Are you serious??? The only reason that they exist is to live off of federal aid. They have received millions of dollars in federal aid. Without federal aid, they would be going through the dumps looking for aluminum cans to recycle.
It wasn't mentioned but I saw an article about Goldman Sachs' charity work. It seems that their foundation has something under $500,000,000 in capital, and the person in charge tried to get them to boost the amount.
"he had tried unsuccessfully to persuade Goldman to give $1 billion to charity.
At the time, he said that Goldman executives rejected the idea because of concerns about shareholder reaction."
But the same Goldman executives approved $17 billion in executive bonuses for nine months because obviously the shareholders wouldn't mind that. There is a reason that studies have shown that the people who get into high executive positions are almost invariably sociopaths.
