PERRY 'HELL BENT' ON PLEASING RIGHT-WING BASE.... It's funny to think about now, but Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) used to be a Democrat. In 1988, he even endorsed Al Gore's presidential candidacy. It was just two decades ago.

Now, however, Perry isn't just a right-wing Republican, he's proving to the state party's base just how radical he can be. In the midst of a gubernatorial primary, Perry feels the need to say truly insane things, which this year has included talk of secession and crypto-confederate notions of "nullification" of federal laws.

Yesterday, the governor went even further, going full-on crazy to impress the Tea Party crowd.

Texas GOP Gov. Rick Perry accused President Barack Obama on Wednesday of "punishing" Texas and being "hell-bent" on turning the United States into a socialist country. [...]

Perry ... accused the Obama administration of intentionally dumping illegal immigrants from other western states in Texas, recalling a conversation he had with local officials notifying him that illegal aliens that were caught in Nogales, Arizona were being dropped off by federal authorities in Presidio, Texas.

"Friday a week ago, I got not a phone call from Washington, not a letter from Washington and as a matter of fact, I don't think any member of our congressional delegation was even notified. The first time we were contacted was by the superintendent of the school and the county judge of Presidio County," Perry said.

"They said, 'do you all know what's fixin' to happen?' I said, 'well, no. What's going on?' They said 'the government has just called us and said for us to get ready for an influx of illegal aliens who were captured illegally crossing the border.'"

"It's called the alien transfer-and-exit program," Perry told the crowd, "trucking them from Nogales, past El Paso down to our western border in Presidio."

First, the notion that the president is "hell-bent" on socialism is idiotic.

Second, the notion that the Obama administration is dumping undocumented immigrants rounded up in the region directly in Texas appears to be completely wrong. Greg Sargent reports that an official in Presidio County explained that immigrants who entered the United States illegally are being dropped off -- on the Mexico side of the border.

When Perry told the right-wing activists that the immigrants were brought "to our western border," he conveniently neglected to mention which side of the border.

It's tempting to think being in a Republican primary is forcing Perry to be even nuttier than he'd ordinarily be, but given the scope of his clownish behavior this year, there seems to be more going on here than just primary pressure.

He's a banker-loving socialist and don't you forget it!

I liked him in that movie with Tommy Lee Jones and all those cheerleaders. Other than that, he has been 100% worthless. If Texas elects him governor, then fuck Texas.

could we get an estimate of the savings to the federal budget when we get that asshole of the universe to secede from the union?

surely one would not want to mess with texas, unless one were wearing gloves...

Texas Republicans have always had a crazier-than-thou platform-- Perry is just doing what comes naturally.

Ah, yes. Goodhair McDubya.

The only worthwhile thing about him is that he keeps we Texas Progressives on our game. You have to be well informed and attentive to detail to properly deal with all of the batshit insane effluvia that is coming out of the Republican primary this year.

In Texas, we do have an open primary and so far, I have heard little about the Dems running anybody known who has a chance (well, except the ass Kinky Friedman) so possibly Dems may vote for Kay (blech) in the primary. I'm considering it as the lesser-but-still-great-evil. At least it would be a swipe at the really awful Perry. It's weird but Perry is really unpopular here, but he still seems to be in position to carry on. Living here is very difficult and I can't wait to retire and move.

That's called a lie (see below).

Merriam-Webster --

lie (emphasis mine):

1 :to make an untrue statement with intent to deceive
2 :to create a false or misleading impression

that does kind of surprise me. I would have guessed that he used to be a more sane Repub, but either way he's just another opportunistic whore politician.

I can confirm that Perry is very unpopular, and add that Kay Bailey Hutchison (a.k.a. "RINO," "traitor," etc.) is only slightly less so. But Perry "carries on" by being the alternative to someone even less popular, i.e., those DFH "libruls." He's very much like Sarah Palin in that regard -- not popular, and the positions he's now espousing probably wouldn't get him elected to office, but he knows how to rile a very small, very loud part of the electorate.

What astonishes me about the whole teabag- er, Tea Party sturm und drang is that these folks actually seem to believe that, in their own time, the Founders were people just like them.

I always think that's like saying that Blago's got nice hair. They both have a great deal of it, but dudes, there's no law against updating your look every 30 years or so.

No there isn't. Perry is a cheap, opportunistic hack who will sink to any level, no matter how low, to get a quick vote. He's also a shifty-eyed liar and a first class asshole who has managed the truly astonishing feat of making Shrub look like a worldly, urbane diplomat. (And for the Texas bashers: believe me, he's hated by more people down here than you'd think.)

Kay Bailey please, please, please beat this moron in the March primary. I'm not a GOP'er but christ anyone is better than this ass. Hell is W busy?

He's from Texas - drooling moron stupidity is in the DNA of most of those idiots. Thank god I had the good taste to get far far away from that place (other than Austin).

Important to keep in mind, too, that the real action in November 2010 is in the races for the Legislature -- the Dems were (IIRC) just two seats shy of a majority this last session. The Legislature meets for five months straight, every two years, so there likely won't be another session until January 2011, and we may take control of the Legislature then. That would be, in practical terms, a much bigger win than either Perry or Hutchison winning the governor's race.

Since the illegal immigrants were actually dropped off in Mexico, could this be another Texas land grab?

Texas's neighbors always keep an out and a gun loaded.

i think it was forbes magazine that picked charlie crist as the worst gov. in the nation. my reaction was that's impossible as long as rick perry is in office. someone above called him a whore. he isn't a whore. he's a murdering, traitor, son of a bitch whore.

What ever happened to the investigation into Perry about having dismantled the board who was (the next day) bringing in an arson expert to likely refute the evidence used to put Willingham to death?

That was like, last month. Probably too long for media attention, but this guy sure seems to have nixed what would have been a pretty damning finding. Does Perry really get to do something that brazen and get away with it? Sure seems so; you know, laws are for thee and not for me and all that.

Posted by: terraformer on November 12, 2009 at 2:04 PM | PERMALINK

terraformer--Perry appointed new people to the board that should review this, and surprisingly (not!), they haven't started the investigation. I surely hope there will be some attention from at least the Houston Chronicle if this is just dropped.

Gov. Rick "Goodhair" Perry really is the Republicans answer to Rod Blagojevich...in more ways than one.

If healthcare reform passes, Texas might be doing the rest of us a big favor by seceding. Texas has one of the largest populations of the uninsured, and has numerous environmental issues which will keep the numbers needing healthcare at a high level for years and years. Like California, it's a third world country within our borders.

Posted by: bos'n on November 12, 2009 at 4:10 PM | PERMALINK

For those of you who are convinced that "drooling moron stupidity is in the DNA of most of those idiots" in Texas, I'll remind you of the results of our last gubernatorial election:

Republican Rick Perry 1,716,803 39.03%
Democratic Chris Bell 1,310,353 29.79%
Independent Carole Keeton Strayhorn 797,577 18.13%
Independent Richard “Kinky” Friedman 546,869 12.43%
Libertarian James Werner 26,748 0.61%
Independent James “Patriot” Dillon 718 0.02%
Turnout 4,399,068

So, only 39% of us are demonstrable "drooling idiots" from the data that Perry is our governor. Yes, he's quite unpopular, probably more so now than in 06. But we elect governors by plurality, not majority, there are no runoffs, and there were a lot of candidates (because Perry was so unpopular). Heck, within 10 years we might even approximate the civilized world to the same extent the rest of the US does, especially given the rate at which the country as a whole seems to be degenerating toward our current status.

Some one has to tell me just why anyone should give a shit about Texas. I for sure would never live there and cannot see why anyone else would.

Posted by: veloer on November 12, 2009 at 7:34 PM | PERMALINK

So here's my plan. We not only allow Texas to secede, we demand it. Forty gazillion dollars of Federal money for hurricane cleanup, swine flu aid and so on are saved right off the bat. Offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico is already under the control of the Federal government, not the State of Texas (renamed The Republic of Texas at this point) so no problem there. If reduced refinery capacity becomes a problem for the U.S., we just invade the Republic (it should be a cinch compared to Iraq) and take the refineries back.

In the interests of humane treatment of beleaguered minorities, we evacuate and resettle those residents of Austin and San Antonio who wish to flee the cruel dictatorship that the Republic would quickly become.

It will be a giant step in freeing the U.S. from its dependence on backward and dangerous Third World nations like the State of Texas.
