THE STUPID, IT BURNS (LITERALLY).... Over the summer, right-wing activists hung Democratic Rep. Frank Kratovil (D-Md.) in effigy outside his district office. It was a key signal of what's to come -- the far-right Tea Party crowd's tactics go a little further than the usual political protests we're accustomed to in contemporary American politics.
How much further? A report from southern Virginia highlights this weekend's planned activities in Danville. (via Blue Virginia)
In a move sure to spark controversy, the Danville TEA Party will close their "Fired Up for Freedom" rally by burning Rep. Tom Perriello and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in effigy in response to the passage of landmark healthcare legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The event is being held Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in Blairs, VA at the corner of U.S. 29 and E. Witt Rd. and is open to the public.
Danville TEA Party Chairman Nigel Coleman said, "We were outraged to find that Tom Perriello had voted in favor of this bill. I was with dozens of 5th District voters in his office two days before the vote and we pleaded with him to stand with us against the Pelosi plan.... At this point we feel we have no representation in Congress."
For the record, Periello has met with Teabaggers, and tried to explain his policy approaches to them. They didn't seem interested in good-faith dialog.
And now, these same conservatives are literally planning to set fire to representations of their congressman and the House Speaker.
There's something deeply wrong with these folks.
Update: Josh Marshall adds, "I'm so old I can remember when ritualized symbolic execution of public officials wasn't cool."

Better check the local fire codes. They may need a permit or may not be allowed.

Recall also that Perriello was the target of all those forged letters from astroturf groups trying to kill the climate bill.

Don't most Congress people wear American Flag pins? If these are to be realistic effigies, wouldn't that mean that the Tea Baggers would be burning the American Flag?
And if (when?) one of these clowns sets themselves
on fire trying to ignite the effigy, are they going to call the socialistic Fire Department for help?
Maroons!

Mmmmmm-- weeeell, I'm old enough to remember those carefree college days of the 70's when burning Nixon in effigy was good clean campus fun. The sundial at Columbia University made a great spot for symbolic auto-da-fe. But it did sometimes make for trouble with security and the fire department.

Doesn't surprise me.
After all, these people are used to burning things, like crosses....

-and I'M old enough to remember Buddhist monks burning themselves- and not in effigy- as a protest.
Surely these red blooded, hunnert percent 'mericans are more manly men than them furrin dinks. . .

Someone in the Perriello campaign should videotape it.
I'm sure there's more than enough crazy and KKK similarities to generate innumerable commercials. That is, if the average Virginia voter finds it offensive. I don't live there, so I don't know.

So they burn him in effigy, health care reform will pass, they'll vote him out of office and then take advantage of everything the new system has to offer with a surly entitled attitude and will never be bright enough to look up "irony" in the dictionary.

With any luck some dumb shit tea bagger group will get the bright idea to burn Obama in effigy...and have the media there to record it for posterity.
Now THAT would be a visual to help our cause!

In the interests of comity, I propose that 20 percent of the posters here switch their registration to Republican.
They need the IQ points. . .

Christ almighty, these people!
I'm a Virginian and I'll tell you a few things about this:
1] These particular tea-baggers are the ass end of the Virginia population. Loud and stinky.
2] Tom Perriello replaced Virgil "Crazy Xenophobe" Goode. He's done a pretty good job of keeping things civil. He certainly is not the embarrassment Goode was.
3] Tom Perriello will not win another term. After the election a couple of weeks ago, I just don't think Virginians are smart enough to know what's good for them.
4] When Nixon was burned effigy it was to get us out of the Vietnam War. To burn someone in effigy for trying to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for every American is a bitch barrel full of crazy.

Day, @16:06,
Well, *I* ain't sharing my grey cells with the Repubs; I need both of them for myself. Besides.. Wouldn't that smack of socialist behaviour?

Perriello should show up at the protest. Make sure it is all on tape as he talks to them. He is pretty good at explaining things and not backing down.

Couldn't they burn a flag?
Oops. That would be offensive.

"At this point we feel we have no representation in Congress."
What is up with these folks who can't see the difference between having a representative who votes differently on an issue than they would, and not actually having representation.
It's been at least 14 years since I've had a congresscritter representing me who would vote *my* way. I'm not happy about it, but I don't scream "time for a revolution" either.

Uh huh. Or they scream that the country was "taken from them" because they lost the election. Lost it really, really big. Mmmm. Yeah.
There used to be an amazingly dumb woman (but what she lacked in brains she made up for in bitterness) posting here who equated not having a majority with being politically oppressed. Every time Hillary went down in another primary or caucus, this chick would scream about how she was being "disenfranchised." Lordy.

"...we feel we have no representation in Congress."
I sincerely hope that holds true for you and all you fellow travelers for now and forever. World without end. Amen.

It's the Purple Kool-Aid.

Yeah, but it got Kratovil to do what the teabaggers wanted, didn't it?
If purple-district Dems don't want to be subject to shit like this, then they have to stand up to it and show that it doesn't work.
One can't reward bad behavior and expect less of it.
On the other hand, where's the media outcry about how rude or partisan or incivil this is? Because when a Democrat or progressive activist says so much as "Boo!" the manufactured outrage machine kicks into gear. (Say, what's Anita Dunn doing these days?)

Time to dispatch the black UN helicopters to round up this bunch and rendition them to the special Islamic underground indoctrination bunker in San Francisco.
