THE GOP CIVIL WAR -- CALIFORNIA EDITION.... In New York's 23rd, Dede Scozzafava enjoyed the support of the Republican establishment, but the base preferred Doug Hoffman. In Pennsylvania, Arlen Specter enjoyed the support of the Republican establishment, but the base preferred Jim Toomey. In Florida, Charlie Crist enjoys the support of the Republican establishment, but the base prefers Marco Rubio.

And in California, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina the U.S. Senate candidate with the strong support of GOP leaders. But she'll face state Assemblyman Chuck DeVore in a Republican primary. For the right-wing activists that dominate Republican politics, it's an easy call.

As Dave Weigel reported today, DeVore is the one who "talks bluntly about fascism and even about Barack Obama's birth records."

From the conservative activist's perspective, DeVore's an ideal candidate. After writing a war novel, "China Attacks," in 2000, DeVore became a frequent reviewer at Amazon.com. His take-outs on action novels and political texts reveal more about his political thinking than most candidates would be comfortable divulging. On a Tom Clancy novel about the threat posed by Japan Devore wrote: "Replace "Japan" with "China" and the thesis holds together rather well in 2005." On Jonah Goldberg's "Liberal Fascism": "Roosevelt's New Deal had much in common with Mussolini's fascism." [...]

[A]sked what he thought of Brown's ideas, DeVore didn't take the chance to denounce "birther" rumors or the movement itself-which has been heavily active in California.

"The president is doing himself no favors by spending millions of dollars to block the release of documents surrounding his birth certificate," said DeVore.

A Birther who gave "Liberal Fascism" five stars and who compares the New Deal to Mussolini's fascism? Running statewide in California -- where Obama won with 61% of the vote? What's not to like?

For the record, while nearly all of the party's top leaders have rallied behind Fiorina, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) has endorsed DeVore, citing his "willingness to stand up against his own party leaders."

In other words, as far as DeMint's concerned, DeVore is to the right of the already-conservative Republican Party, which makes him perfect.

The Republican primary is June 8, 2010. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) is no doubt looking forward to it.

Sounds nice -- in theory.

But remember: according to the Village, wherever Democrats are is "the left," and wherever Republicans are is "the center." So this stuff could be deemed perfectly acceptable (or at worst harmlessly eccentric) by 2010, even in California.

It is a very difficult for long time republicans to decide between these two candidates, both of whom possess strong, yet differing credentials.

Carly could easily be the face of 'main stream' republicans. She has proven to be incompetent and this fits well with historical republican attitudes about governing.

DeVore is a firebreather of the Tea Party, Sarah Palin mold. If you would declare himself to be a Creationist, he would be an almost perfect candidate.

What is a good republican to do when faced with such great choices?

One can just imagine how much trouble Democrats would have getting elected, if it wasn't for Republicans.

Obama is spending millions to block release of documents surrounding his birth certificate? Privacy laws in every state block access to government records oo indivduals, unless perhaps there is a crimminal investigation. Even then there are limits as to who has access. The only ones spending millions are those filing lawsuits. Just keep stimulating the economy folks. epecially to those liberal lawyers you so dispise.

Sarah Palin is in the thick of all this. She is already spreading a fib:

Sarah Palin's heavily publicized book tour begins in earnest this Monday, but weeks before, her ghostwritten memoir, Going Rogue: An American Life, had already vaulted into the number one position at Amazon. Warming up for a tour that will take her across Middle America in a bus, Palin tested her lines in a November 7th speech before a crowd of 5,000 anti-abortion activists in Wisconsin. She promptly cited an urban legend as a "disturbing trend," claiming the Treasury Department had moved the phrase "In God We Trust" from presidential dollar coins. (The rumor most likely originated with a 2006 story on the far-right website WorldNetDaily.)
[WND - no wonder, what trash - made for each other ...]

BTW, check AlterNet to get away from Establishment Democrats bubble ...

Also see reports of Steve Schmidt ("bullet head" mgr of McCain/Palin Campaign) saying her attacks on the Campaign are riddled with lies.
BTW', make sure to get "Going Rouge" (sic! sickening as well to be sure ...)

What exactly is Carly running on? Her abysmal performance as a campaign rep for McCain in '08? Or running HP into the ground? Her name is toxic in Northern California, and all the OC crazies are going to go for DeVore. No way she survives the primary.

[PS - I meant, in the middle of the GOP fratricide (and sororicide) in general, I have no tip regarding her and CA.]

Paranoid bullshit. For more, go to nomoremister.blogspot.com/.

California is not going to elect to statewide office a proto-fascist like Chuck DeVore.

Posted by: Screamin' Demon on November 16, 2009 at 2:38 PM | PERMALINK

sounds like a prime "Operation Chaos" opportunity. tons of CA Dems should register as R's for the primary and vote to nominate DeVore.

Posted by: zeitgeist on November 16, 2009 at 2:42 PM | PERMALINK

Just came a across a great currenttv spoof cartoon entitled the stupid virus. Palin, Limbaugh, Beck, O"Reilly all included.

I'm economically center-left and socially far-left, but I might find registering as a Republican and voting for Chuck Devore in the primary.

Why would I do such a thing, you ask? Because I don't want Carly Fiorina to be my Senator. She was a disastrous CEO of HP; I don't want her anywhere near running anything that might have an impact on my life.

If she wins the primary, there's a possibility - however small - that she'll defeat Sen. Boxer. If, however, she loses in the primary, she's gone.

I don't want to run the risk of her winning the general election. So I have a strong incentive to vote against her in the primary.

Posted by: aphrael on November 16, 2009 at 2:51 PM | PERMALINK

A while back I was thinking of giving Boxer some money against Fiorina, but didn't think she'd need much of a war chest; with DeVore, Boxer could probably finance the campaign with the weekend proceeds of a lemonade stand.

Posted by: Uli Kunkel on November 16, 2009 at 2:51 PM | PERMALINK

Correction in first paragraph: that's "Pat Toomey." Jim Toomey is the creator of the comic strip "Sherman's Lagoon." I will admit that he'd probably make a better Senator than Pat.

Posted by: jvwalt on November 16, 2009 at 2:56 PM | PERMALINK

It's Pat! (Toomey)

Posted by: ibid on November 16, 2009 at 2:57 PM | PERMALINK

I expect Boxer is thrilled at whatever outcome there will be in the GOP primary. Either she'll face Fiorina, a blithering idiot best known for (a) running HP into the ground as CEO and (b) her disastrous tenure as a McCain adivsor) or she'll face DeVore, a Birther wingnut who'd be lucky to break 40% in a general election in California. She might be the luckiest incumbant Senator since Bill Nelson hit the jackpot by getting Katherine Harris as an opponent in 2006.

Hmmm . . . I think you're missing the point. It isn't that this guy can win an election, it's that the MSM (the "Villagers") will push his radical viewpoints for him as though they made sense and were actually popular outside his radicalized faction.

In other words, his being in that race will damage the national discourse because the Villagers will legitimatize his freakish views, even if he loses by 30%.

Not because they believe in his nonsense, but because, like good little peasants, they know their social superiors and do their best to support them, no matter what.

Have to agree about Fiorina's disastrous time at HP, and other HP employees (as ex-employees who were laid off) agree:

Watch how Rep. Beth Coulson (R) fairs in her February 2 primary to succeed U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk (IL-10).

Coulson is pro-abortion rights, pro-gay rights, pro-gun control and has relied on the support of organized labor in the past, including Acorn-tainted SEIU.

The establishment, including Kirk, supports Coulson. Will Kirk's Right Wing opponents in the primary succeed in making Coulson an issue for Kirk?

Gee, hmm, let's see, who is going to win? Um der uh Barbara Boxer?!

That's right little Jimmy!

"...and who compares the New Deal to Mussolini's facsism?" Steve Benen

To be honest, the National Recovery Act WAS very much like what Mussolini SAID Fascism was. But where Italian economy was completely controlled by the Fascist government; under the NRA, separate areas of industrial/agricultural production were under the control of boards consisting of actual producers, farmers, laborers, etc.
Of course, I doubt vey much that DeVore understands (or even cares) about that!

California - my home. Nobody with much sense wants to run for anything in this state. Most of the eager candidates lack a moral compass, are rich opportunists lusting for power or are idiots - some are a rich mix of all 3. I’m really hoping Bernie Sanders will consider changing states……sigh.

"...documents surrounding his birth certificate". What the hell does that even mean? What are "documents surrounding one's birth certificate", and how would they be more legitimate than the birth certificate itself?

It's as if the right believes extra words are an effective smokescreen for dozy Americans who are easily left behind when you shift to multi-syllabic. Unable to get serious traction with "birth certificate", DeVore appears to suggest the President is hiding something else.

For the incurious lemmings of the far right, that's usually enough.

I was honestly quite surprised that John McCain won the California primary -- I fully expected it to go to Huckabee or another batshit crazy Republican, but it was McCain followed by Romney with Huckabee a distant third.

Ooooo. I'm SO glad I'm still registered in the ReThuglican Party. Now I have someone to vote for. I'm Vor DeVore!

"What exactly is Carly running on?"

Being a breast cancer survivor, near as I can tell.

I just LOVED it when someone asked her if McCain could run a Fortune 500 company, and she said, "Oh no."

Funny thing was, neither could she. Takes a failure to know a failure?

This is the best analysis I've yet seen w/r/t:

"weapon-of-mass-destruction-related program activities"

I never understood until now how they seemed to actually believe anyone with a 3-digit IQ could possibly buy that.
