THURSDAY'S CAMPAIGN ROUND-UP....Today's installment of campaign-related news items that wouldn't generate a post of their own, but may be of interest to political observers.

* As absentee ballots get counted in New York's 23rd, it looks like Doug Hoffman is going to lose to Rep. Bill Owens (D-N.Y.), again.

* In a bizarre twist, Hoffman now claims there was a conspiracy among union members and ACORN to "sway the results" of the congressional special election. Even local Republican officials dismiss the accusations as "absolutely false."

* A new Rasmussen poll shows California Attorney General Jerry Brown (D) tied with Meg Whitman (R) in next year's gubernatorial campaign, 41% each. Brown leads the other Republican candidates in hypothetical match-ups by about 10 points.

* Speaking of California, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) is apparently done with electoral politics. ''I have never labeled myself as a politician, so I am not going to run for anything else,'' Schwarzenegger said Tuesday.

* Former North Carolina Lt. Gov. Dennis Wicker (D) is the latest in a long line of Democrats to decide not to run against Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) next year.

* Republican National Committeeman Sean Mahoney had been rumored as a possible Senate candidate in New Hampshire, but he's decided not to join the crowded GOP primary. Barring any unexpected announcements, former state Attorney General Kelly Ayotte, former gubernatorial nominee Ovide Lamontagne, and businessman Bill Binnie will vie for Republican nod in the open-seat contest.

* Arkansas Lt. Governor Bill Halter (D) remains coy about whether he'll take on incumbent Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D) in a primary next year.

* Sarah Palin said she'd consider Glenn Beck as a running mate in 2012. I'm not sure if she was kidding.

* Dick Cheney, meanwhile, still isn't interested in running for anything in 2012.

Arnold "Ventura" Schwarzenegger will go down in history as the worst California governor in its modern history. It is hard to believe that anyone could make Pete Wilson look good.

This just in: As a fundraising move, Hoffman is now accusing ACORN of stealing the election.

These people are just parodies of themselves at this point.

RE Richard Burr (R-NC) the only hope now is to get that dumb asshole to "go galt"

I no longer loves me some Mel Watt, now that he has sold his soul to the Bank of Satan...

Oh, maybe I should've read your second item before I commented, huh?

A new Rasmussen poll shows California Attorney General Jerry Brown (D) tied with Meg Whitman (R) in next year's gubernatorial campaign, 41% each. Brown leads the other Republican candidates in hypothetical match-ups by about 10 points.

That the single worst governor in the history of California in the 20th Century could be poised to come back and finish us off, is the worst news I have heard in the 50 years I have lived in this state.

Just this past weekend, "liberal" Jerry Brown was at the Democratic Party statewide meeting, and he spoke against a public option, against any attempt to reform Proposition 13 (which is at least intellectually consistent, since it was his incompetence and mendacity back in 1975 that insured there would be a Proposition 13 to begin with), spoke against employee unions, spoke in favor of continuing "3-strikes" incarcerations - which is the main policy driving the state into bankruptcy - and stated his continuing support for a super-majority to change taxes. He also spoke about having to continue additional reductions in state services.

Could someone please tell me what the difference is between Governor Moonbeam and Meg Whitman, other than gender and age?

Once again, as I have done in every election this worthless sonofabitch has run in since 1978 that I could vote in (didn't live in Oakland to vote against him there), I'll be voting for Whoever Is Running Against Jerry.

Hoffman has shown himself to be not very bright, indifferent to doing the work of governing, and a first-class jerkoff. I can't understand why the Republican party isn't rushing to support him.

You need to go look at the second Brown Administration, 1974-82.

Speaking of California, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) is apparently done with electoral politics. ''I have never labeled myself as a politician, so I am not going to run for anything else,'' Schwarzenegger said Tuesday.

Too bad. On his worst day, Arnold would be a better Democratic Senator than Dianne Feinstein will ever be.

TCinLA - I confess I wasn't paying much attention to California politics in the 1970s and 1980s. But it's hard to imagine that any U.S. state in the post-Jim Crow era has been run as badly as California has been run during Ahnold's time as governor.

That oughta unite the country...

Sarah Palin said she'd consider Glenn Beck as a running mate in 2012.

since he wont be rotting in a prison cell, the only hope for dick cheney -- with his hard black heart and his shit-filled soul -- is to be burning in hell in 2012...

Palin can tell the one-liners and Beck can cry. Perfect.

As one who hasn't followed NC politics closely for many years, I really, really don't understand why no Dem of note seems willing to take on Sen. Burr next year. WTF is going on down there? Seems that you wouldn't have to be all that strong a candidate to have a pretty good chance of picking up the seat.

In a bizarre twist, Hoffman now claims there was a conspiracy among union members and ACORN to "sway the results" of the congressional special election. Even local Republican officials dismiss the accusations as "absolutely false."

There may be some room to wonder how the actual GOP wants this to come out, given that Hoffman isn't one of them.

Posted by: DonBoy on November 19, 2009 at 12:21 PM | PERMALINK

Ha-ha. The thought of "undisclosed location" stooping to shaking the hands of ordinary people, begging for their vote. His daughter is raving.

Posted by: SteinL on November 19, 2009 at 12:26 PM | PERMALINK

I have personally swayed the vote and tampered with elections for years by voting against people like Hoffman. It's my right.

Awesome! Hope the GOP stimulate the economy by funding the heck out of that ticket.

Could someone please tell me what the difference is between Governor Moonbeam and Meg Whitman, other than gender and age? - TCinLA
You could reduce it further to either gender OR age.

"I have never labeled myself as a politician, so I am not going to run for anything else" - Aahnuld
translation: I'm not delivering sufficient returns for the corporations that own me so I'm being put out to pasture. (understanding of course that a more aggressive candidate will follow.)

If you listen carefully, you can hear the bolts rattling around in Hoffman's noggin when he speaks.

Posted by: bdop4 on November 19, 2009 at 12:47 PM | PERMALINK

Although it's hard to imagine California electing another Republican governor after the disaster that is Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jerry Brown is the one who could make it happen. Governor Moonbeam (As he was known back in the day) made a mess of things the last time he occupied the statehouse and that was when the California economy was doing well. With our economy flat on its back and debt piling up a Governor Jerry Brown might well be the first in history to lead a state into receivership.

And I must agree with TCinLA's observation that Arnold would be more of a Democrat than the execrable Feinstein. Time hasn't been kind enough to erase the image of a grinning Feinstein escorting Condoleeza Rice arm-in-arm into Rice's Senate Confirmation hearings for SoS.

Please please please please *PLEASE* let Palin/Beck be the Republican pick to run in 2012. I would so *love* to hear all the dirt they find on Beck blared on the national news, month after month, for all the world to see. :D

and in the entire NY-23 there are probably, what... 5 union members and zero acorn organiers?
good work, guys and gals.

"In a bizarre twist, Hoffman now claims there was a conspiracy among union members and ACORN to 'sway the results' of the congressional special election."

The only "bizarre" part is that he waited so long to go there. I expected this the day after the election.

You forget that liberals are possessed of super powers that enable them to control minds, alter ballots without touching them, make dogs live with cats, etc. That we use them so infrequently is the effect of our namby-pamby nature.

Burr of NC is useless, I cannot imagine that there is not someone, anyone who could not beat him, so please let's get him out of there.

Wow, Hoffman is totally unhinged. He was wingnutia candidate perfection, now I guess he and his "supporters" can pretty much eat shit and die.

"In a bizarre twist, Hoffman now claims there was a conspiracy among union members and ACORN to "sway the results" of the congressional special election. "

Of course there was. And they carried out their wicked plan by going to the polls and voting for Hoffman's opponent!
Dreadful wicked plotters!

Since when is anything Schwarzenegger says truthful? The guy has been lying from day one, and he will be doing so to his dying day. To say he governed in bad faith is an insult to all those who operate in bad faith. Good riddance to a rotten freak that was elected (twice!) by brain-dead morons.

"Dick Cheney, meanwhile, still isn't interested in running for anything in 2012."

On the other hand, if you strike the word "for" from that sentence...
