AS IF STANDISH HASN'T SUFFERED ENOUGH.... Few communities have been as hard hit by the recession as Standish, Michigan. With an unemployment rate for nearly 25%, Standish's economy has been kept above water, barely, by the Standish Maximum Correctional Facility. The prison generates one-fourth of the revenue for the town's budget and is easily the largest employer.

In June, the state announced it would have to close Standish Max, and the struggling town realized things were poised to go from dreadful to abysmal. In August, however, there was a glimmer of hope -- the Obama administration was considering the prison as a location for Gitmo detainees. Most locals were thrilled at the prospect of a lifeline, and area politicians, from both parties, hoped desperately that Standish would be selected.

But then the right-wing politicians decided to intervene. Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R), who's inexplicably running for governor next year, decided he'd fight to prevent the White House from "bringing terrorists to Michigan." This week, Liz Cheney's new political operation kept the demagoguery going.

Cheney's group, Keep America Safe, has released a short documentary starring several residents of little Standish, Michigan, slamming the Obama administration over a proposal to transfer some Guantanamo detainees to the town's maximum security facility, one of several facilities being discussed.

The vid ... ominously warns that unnamed "politicians" want Gitmo detainees placed in their "small farm town," without saying who the politicians are or whether they're Federal or local. A resident says those politicians "aren't listening to us little people in Standish."

But Standish's City Manager tells us that local leaders and residents want the facility, and dismissed Cheney's efforts as "fearmongering."

Cheney is "certainly not representing the views of our community," the City Manager, Michael Moran, told our reporter, Amanda Erickson.

Standish's city council recently approved a resolution encouraging the transfer of Gitmo detainees to the prison. The vote was unanimous. It's almost as if local officials think they understand what their community needs better than Liz Cheney does. The nerve.

For more on this, Chris Bodenner had a terrific item on the Standish issue last month. It noted that, thanks to Republican efforts, the community will probably not be chosen by the administration. The community will suffer terribly, but Hoekstra will no doubt claim "victory" for taking away the struggling town's last hope.

The people of Standish know that Gitmo terrorists are only the first step in a slippery slope. Next will come Sharia law, gay marriage, and worse.

And these people's congressional rep -- actually Bart Stupak, not Pete Hoekstra -- is too busy uterus-watching nationally to worry much about Standish's multiple problems.

Al, you say that like it's a bad thing...don't forget the mandatory gay sharia abortions...

The unsophisticated rubes in Standish can't see the Big Picture: Liz Cheney's launch onto the national stage is more vital to our national security than a few jobs in some little town she's never heard of.

The first time I ever heard the word "rube" was from a republican political consultant friend of mine. And he was making fun of them. And he had to sell his country home because his wife refused to go up there because of the ignorance of the people in the neighborhood.

This reminds me of Dick Army and Hoffman saying that the concerns of the people in NY 23 are parochial. Look how that turned out.

Gosh, there's even a man on the scene. I mean, not so long ago Dean David Broder made his annual Pageant of the Tenantry on Beaver Island, just across the state. He may have noticed the usual high Northern Michigan unemployment made catastrophic by such closings--on the other hand, he won't have to pay his caretakers so much this winter.

And yes, Hoekstra/Cheney are pure p's of s. Until they made their little fearmongering campaign, EVERYONE in Arenac County was hoping for the Gitmo detainees to keep Standish Max open. Good God, they had Detroit drug gangsters in that place--you think they fear a few guys with beards?

There is actually a larger issue. What exactly is the classification of these people to be put in prison. Enemy combatants or criminals? If they're enemy combatants they have to be released when hostilities are ended. If they're criminals they have to be tried and sentenced.

As a "rube" living in Standish, I have tried to spread the truth, as in silly facts like there are already 300 or so detainees in other places in the country with no terrorist attacks. But besides that, if all the terrorists are going to be in New York for KSM's trial, whose going to be left to attack us?

BTW, Arenac County the home of Standish has a population of about 16-17,000 people. There is little diversity, except the number of lesbians. Dave Munson, the owner of the Summer Trail Bar, had a pool team in the late 90's that primarily consisted of gay women. Mr. Munson is no doubt the star of Liz Cheney's video. I don't know how the gay fits in, but just sayin'

Cheney and her ilk think that the people who run Standish Max are incompetent morons who can't be trusted to safely incarcerate convicted terrorists. These Republicans also think that the people in the surrounding community wet themselves at the thought of having terrorists locked up in Standish Max. Why does Liz Cheney hate the American people?

Neither Hoekstra or Stupak represent the district Standish is in. But Hoekstra sure thinks he does.

Reply to topic:
I'd like to say that Hoekstra doesn't have a chance for governor, but the Republicans have done everything in their power to prevent Granholm from accomplishing much of anything during her tenure. The Republicans will easily be able to cast Granholm and any following Democrat as ineffectual. Granholm just didn't throw enough weight around and the Democrats of the Michigan legislature were nothing short of milquetoast.

The Obama admin should look at Michigan's past 8 years as a case study in how not to handle Republican obstructionism, but I fear they're going down the exact same path.

Stupak is Standish's representative. Check it out.

Wow, I thought Stupak's district stopped in Iosco. You are correct sir. Thanks for pointing that out.

I note, chillingly, that Republican senators are trying to tie up key governorships in swing states. Almost like they are trying to put the fix back into the Diebold damnation we suffered for 8-years. Republicans are such a tiny minority now, it makes you wonder how they have any power left. New Jersey and Virginia have already fallen prey.

"has released a short documentary starring several residents of little Standish, Michigan, "

The thought occurred to me that someone might want to check to see if these people actually live in Standish, MI. I suspect, given previous GOP behavior, that there is a strong possibility that they are not.
