A DERANGED HUCKSTER HAS SOME PRODUCTS FOR YOU.... Glenn Beck doesn't want a microphone; he wants a cult that will keep buying his wares.
Glenn Beck, the popular and outspoken Fox News host, says he wants to go beyond broadcasting his opinions and start rallying his political base -- formerly known as his audience -- to take action.
To do so, Mr. Beck is styling himself as a political organizer. In an interview, he said he would promote voter registration drives and sponsor a series of seven conventions across the country featuring what he described as libertarian speakers.
On Saturday he held a festive campaign-style rally in The Villages in Florida, north of Orlando, in which he promoted his recently released book, "Arguing With Idiots," and announced another book to come next August filled with right-leaning policy proposals gathered from the conventions.
For those keeping score at home, Beck released a book in June, and then another in September, with plans for yet another in August. That's three books in 14 months. That doesn't include the Christmas book released last year, which will get an update with a photo companion book this year. It also doesn't include the "An Inconvenient Book" that was published in May, or "America's March to Socialism," an audio book released around the same time.
For a guy who seems to read a third-grade level -- remember, he thinks the word "OLIGARH" is missing a "y" -- Beck seems awfully prolific in creating new products for his minions to purchase.
Indeed, Steve M. gets this just right: "So now we see what Glenn Beck really is: He's basically a televangelist. A huckster. A late-night pitchman selling seminars and book/DVD/audio combo packages that will allegedly help you get rich through flipping real estate. A human-potential-movement cult leader who promises life breakthroughs in exchange for participation in costly 'religious' or 'therapy' programs."
Beck's conventions will apparently be seminars, in which suckers God-loving patriots will learn all about the voices in Beck's head Beck's vision for a better future.
And when I say "future," I mean future -- Beck claims to be working on a "100 year plan."
I've heard of long cons, but this is ridiculous.
Update: Beck's pre-election gathering will be a rally at the Lincoln Memorial, scheduled for August 28, 2010 -- the anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. It's literally nauseating.

For a guy who compares the Dems to Communists and Nazis, the mere title "100 Year Plan" thing smacks of stunning irony and a total lack of self awareness on the part of his audience.

I'm really surprised that people don't make note of the fact that the ol' rodeo cowboy is all gussied up in a Wehrmacht uniform for his cover shot on the Arguing With People Like Myself book.

Looks like he's setting up a franchise/scam of sorts. He's setting them up to donate to an inevitably failed Presidential race, a race that will also increase the sales of his stuff. But he's no Colbert, who let you know that he was just running for publicity. He's going to make the teabaggers believe that he really is running to make changes, and that only because the system is so corrupt, he can't win.
He'll collect millions in donations, increase publicity for his books and tapes and whatever. Since nobody thinks he has even an anorexic ghost of a chance of winning the election, except for teabaggers, he won't have to take the hard slams of a real candidate. And when the inevitable occurs, he'll be able to blame the Republicans/Democrats (whichever party wins) for his loss, and make more money whining.

We've got nine months to plan the counter-demonstration.
Organizing political rallies seems to be the newest trend in the news/entertainment business. It's not just Beck -- Faux News has their Teabaggers and Olbermann has his health care events. Let's give Political Animal the national attention that it deserves!

I recently watched Elia Kazan's classic "A Face in the Crowd". Beck really is the demagogue "Lonesome" Rhodes, just with a touch more delusion.

100 Year Plan? He thinks his ideas will actually last 100 years? Naah...he's going to string the audience along as for many years as possible. A Hundred Year Plan will do it. Sounds too much like the people who keep saying the "End is Near". They keep stringing people along saying "any day" now, and as long as you are vague about it, it lasts a lifetime.

These hucksters never end well. At some point, there will be a huge scandal, driving away some segment of his supporters and leaving an even more hard-core set of true believers.

There's a sucker born every minute.
Beck is living proof of reincarnation- P.T. Barnum would be proud. . .
(for the historians in the group, Barnum didn't actual say that; Google offers a plethora of sources.)

"OLIGARH" may or may not be missing a "Y", but it certainly is missing a "C". Can you fix that, Steve?
Posted by: POed Lib on November 22, 2009 at 11:37 AM | PERMALINK
POed Lib, that's exactly how Beck spelled it. Steve is directly quoting Glenn. The next day Beck came back and sheepishly mentioned his mistake and corrected it by adding the Y. Saying something along the lines of "the Y stands for you!".
So yea, the numbnuts misspelled it effing twice!

"Talking with Idiots"? Are we to assume that he is referring to talking to himself?

Guys like Beck make me wish there really were a personal god.

Martin-that's what'll happen to his Obeseness. Beck will end up back on drugs and taking his own life.

If Beck is truly going do to his own version of the "I Have a Dream" rally, same date & place as Dr King's, that's disgusting. He shames himself by sullying Dr King's memory in that way.

Does the FCC have anything to say about turning the public airwaves into a propaganda pipeline for a political action committee?

Beck seems to be modeling his 100 yr. plan after a certain person's vision of a 1000 yr. rule.
You know, that guy that really liked things like Beck's complexion, his eye color and his hair shade. You know, Beck's fantasy leader who was just misunderstood. You know that guy whose name Beck's fellow travelers hold up on placards in public. You know that bastion of fascist filth who proclaimed a 1000 yr. Reich!
Beck is a dangerous fool! -Kevo

Beck may run afoul with Leader Limbaugh if he's not careful with all this marketing stuff. Since they're both in it solely for the money, and Limbaugh was fleecing people since Beck was drooling strained carrots out of his mouth and all. (Ok, that was just yesterday but still.....)

Beck is just setting himself up to be the mormon Presidential nominee that both Joe Smith and Mitt Romney failed to become.
I can't help but wonder how much tithing money he's paying to the mormon "church." Think his followers know that the more of his stuff they buy, the more money the mormon "church" gets? And don't the mormons and the catholics and the evangelicals all hate each other anyway, only coming together in common cause because they hate gay people more? Someone should really remind his followers of that.

100 Year Plan?
Ask Beckerhead how the 1000 year Reich worked out.

Beck reminds me of John Simm as The Master in Doctor Who, except Beck is way scarier.

Can anyone say Joseph Smith? Jimmy Swaggart? The Minutemen? Milli Vanilli? These are plain and simple con artists. Yet their legacy remains. While all went on to an early demise in some manner, they each created a passionate following that has endured. That legacy has remained powerful in some instances. This guy is a con artist, a morning DJ preying on people's fears, hopes and ignorance.

Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin are taking their cues from William Jennings Bryan. Both Mr. Beck and Ms. Palin are carefully crafting their campaigns in carefully chosen fields where they know they will be welcomed, and they are avoiding larger cities -- and media venues. They are tapping into a movement that is a mile wide and an inch deep, and they know that anger is easy to provoke -- find someone to blame for all the problems. This kind of campaign works to a degree. To paraphrase Aaron Sorkin in "The American President", whatever your particular problem is, neither Glenn Beck nor Sarah Palin is the least bit interested in solving it. They are interested in two things and two things only: making you afraid of it and telling you who's to blame for it. It sells books, it sells newspapers, and people talk about them. But if history is any guide, people don't vote for them. William Jennings Bryan was the nominee for president three times... and lost each time.

Would some legitimate organization please apply for a permit to gather at the Lincoln Memorial on that day before hallowed ground is desecrated?

What's the FEC and FCC regulations on this TV personality having unfettered access to the public airwaves for promoting his political position as his own political action committee? It seems he's crossed the line of political talking head to a PAC.

What will be ironic is that, if the event actually goes forward, not a single African American will attend. Aside from police or random passers-by.
Or capitol medical staff attending to an obese heart attack victim.

I find one piece of information consistently absent from posts/discussions about Glenn Beck: that there is still an active and growing effort to strip him of his sponsors.
Just yesterday, Nestle removed ads not only from Glenn Beck, but all Fox News shows. Last week, he lost Premier Foods (largest food manufacturer in UK) as well as other minor sponsors.
Obviously, I'm biased, but the effort does seem to warrant at least a mention or a footnote when discussing Glenn Beck in any critical way.
