THIS IS CNN?.... Trevor Francis, the communications director at the Republican National Committee, was forced out yesterday. A couple of hours later, the party announced that Alex Castellanos, a notorious Republican media consultant and CNN contributor, will take over as a senior communications adviser to RNC Chairman Michael Steele.
The news prompted Atrios to note, "I'm sure CNN will keep his seat warm." I assumed the same thing, but as it turns out, that won't be necessary -- Castellanos will still be sitting in the same seat.
Longtime Republican media strategist Alex Castellanos will continue to serve as an on-air personality for CNN despite recently taking on a consulting role for the Republican National Committee, the network confirms.
On Monday, it was reported that Castellanos, who has served as a media consultant for many Republican presidential candidates as well as an advisor for the private health insurance industry, will play an expanded role at the RNC after the committee parted ways with its communications director, Trevor Francis.
Apparently, Castellanos makes enough money doing media work for private health insurance companies and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce that he'll be unpaid for his work as the RNC's senior communications adviser. And since Castellanos won't literally be on the Republican National Committee's payroll, CNN is entirely comfortable paying him to offer "political analysis" on the air.
And here I thought the ethical/professional lines had already been blurred too much. Now, CNN -- you know, the network that has positioned itself as above the fray -- will feature regular on-air commentary from the Republican National Committee's new message/strategy guy.

You know, I was going to comment on Atrios's post along the lines of "Keep his seat warm? What makes you think he'll be leaving?"
But I thought that was too stupid.

Are you still a whore if some of your work is unpaid?

I can't get really worked up about this. It's not like he pretends to be an unbiased observer of politics. Carville and Begala are also on CNN a lot and it's not too far fetched to say they have some influence within the DNC. I'm okay with shills who's affiliations are well known. It's the steath shills on TV that bother me.

To answer your question, no, you're a slut.

Many people hold down two jobs. Why should you assume that he will be less effective at CNN because he has a second job?

I have always thought that as the world got stoopider and stoopider and crazier and crazier that Wolf Blitzer is probably the Master of the Universe.
I'm pretty sure this latest news fits right into that theology...

Gee, I didn't know Castellanos was such a ratings' hit.
The decline of CNN continues...

Oy. I didn't learn until recently that Alex Castellanos is the same guy who's responsible for that race-baiting hatchet job on Democrat Harvey Gannt when he challenged neo-Confederate Sen. Jesse Helms (R-Cold Mountain): "You needed that job. You were the best qualified. But they gave it to a minority ..."
(Sigh!) And yet, some people will still wonder why I'd rather tune into the BBC.

As the politician once said to the prostitute, "Amateurs are ruining both of our professions." These days, an amateur can't even afford to get into the game.

Once again...no wonder CNN is in last place. I wish Sirius would drop them and pick up MSNBC. I can't stand listening to CNN, but I can't be cutoff from news. Half of all thier stories last week were about Sarah Palin. They have failed as a news organization. It's a damn shame, they used to be good.

Oh well as long as he's not getting paid to advise the Republican National Committee on how best to exploit his mole status at CNN, then I guess there's no ethics problem!
If he were taking money for that sort of thing, now that would raise some questions.

Who could forget? They are much missed, especially now as the media seems to be devolving by the hour these days.

I never watch cable, so my question is: how is Castellanos introduced when he's on CNN?
Here in Boston, the NPR affiliate often has on a couple of unemployed campaign consultants - one Republican, one Democratic, and always both together - to spin the horseraces in local politics. If one of them is working for an active candidate, they get replaced, to avoid that sort of bias and conflict of interest, but their partisan affiliations, and indeed biases, are made completely clear. And although it does amount to advertising their consulting businesses, I don't think an ethical line is being crossed in having regular appearances from a Republican hack - so long as they're explicitly labelled as such. Although I dunno why CNN would pay them, when plenty of other interchangeable partisan hacks would kill to appear for free.
Now Castellanos, the individual, with his history of racist appeals, is objectionable. But the idea of having a go-to house Republican hack seems fine to me, so long as it's prominently labelled and reasonably balanced. Of course, the important goal should be to downplay the sort of horserace coverage and he said/she said "debate" and actually cover real news and real policy.

Where's the outrage on this?!! If the roles reversed and Castellanos was a Democrat working for Tim Kaine at the same time as working at CNN, Republicans would turn it into a major issue.
