PERINO'S POOR PERSPICACITY.... It's best not to expect much from Dana Perino's appearances on Fox News. The former Bush White House press secretary tends to make largely forgettable comments, representing a generic and uninteresting partisan Republican perspective.
But Perino's appearance last night with Sean Hannity was more noteworthy than most. The topic was the shootings at Fort Hood, and Perino, playing her usual role, criticized the White House for not having labeled the massacre as "terrorism." She emphasized that the rhetorical description of the violence "matters," though she didn't say why.
More important, though, is what Perino went on to argue: "We did not have a terrorist attack on our country during President Bush's term. I hope they're not looking at this politically. I do think that we owe it to the American people to call it what it is."
It wouldn't be the first time Perino said something puzzling, but in this case, it's not even clear what she was going for.
George W. Bush served for eight years, and during his tenure the United States suffered its most devastating terrorist attack ever. Soon after, there were the anthrax attacks against Americans. Depending on how one chooses to define the word "terrorism," it's also worth remembering the countless attacks against U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
"We did not have a terrorist attack on our country during President Bush's term." Someone's going to have to explain this one to me.

Guess you could add the nut jobs in the Beltway sniper attacks as a terrorist attack as well.

Also don't forget the Shoe Bomber who was mere seconds away from destroying a jetliner heading for the U.S. The Bush administration did nothing to stop that, it was up to the victims of that attack to save their own lives.

All murders are acts of Terror. I am sure the victims would all agree that they felt terror as they were murdered. But to these Repukes it is automatically an act of terror when the murderer is a brown skinned perosn. If Fort Hood killings were an act of terror, so than the killing of the abotion doctor in the hall of a church was a terrorist act. But did you hear any one like Dana call it that????

If the Fort Hood shootings count as a terrorist attack, then why not the John Allen Muhammad sniper killings in 2002?
Posted by: Daryl McCullough on November 25, 2009 at 11:32 AM | PERMALINK
In October 2002 the Beltway Sniper shooters killed 10 people.
In March 2005 the Red Lake shooter killed 9 people.
In April 2007 the Virginia Tech shooter killed 32 people.
In February 2008 the Northern Illinois University shooter killed six people.

They're eager to call it a terrorist attack so that they can say Obama had a terrorist attack on 'his watch'. It's purely a rhetorical device to wield for political impressions.

She's hoping for a real Crusade. When the crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099 they slaughtered huge numbers of Muslims and Jews -- so many that contemporary accounts described the streets as ankle-deep in blood. I suspect that's what the Xtian Right would like to see.

Perino is simply going with the party line like a good little ignorant robot. However, I would like register by object to calling her a C**t in an earlier letter. While I find Repugs vile and repussive and stupid, there is a level of name calling which should be avoided.

Perilously perceptive pronouncements positively and palpably persnickety.

This is just par for the course with Ms. Perino. Remember this is the same Dana Perino, who as the press secretary could not differentiate between the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Why in the flaming blue hell does this lying sack of corporate-whore bovine excrement have a post in the Obama Administration? She spent the last 8 years being paid to be a serial liar. A post on the Broadcasting board of Governors? I realize Mitch McConnell is desperate for attention, but COME ON. When you're pretty, nobody expects you to be smart *as well*. So, you can get away with a lot, including lies as bald-faced as this one had been. She'd probably subscribe to that herself, had she been called out on it -- "Oh, poor airhead me, how could I have forgotten!". But, given the "environment" (Fox Mews), she knew nobody was going to call her on it and it would fly over the heads of most of the viewers, while implanting the idea she wanted to push. Mission Accomplished.

Interesting how people who lie a lot get used to it. It's like after a while they no longer recognize the truth. Perino is so used to prevaricating how 911 was not W’s fault, that in her own mind she’s moved the whole event back in time to occur during Clinton’s term.

She's not in the administration, but Obama recently made a "rubber-stamp" appointment of Perino to a "Republican" seat on some official board. Google it.

The Ft Hood shooter is being charged under the UCMJ, which does not have a charge for terrorism. He could be charged with perhaps conspiracy if he is tied to someone else, like the cleric he e-mailed, or even mutiny, but not terrorism. I guess muntineerism would be more fitting. The Patriot Act defines international and domestic terrorism and makes that a crime. One of the conditions must be an intent to "influence a government". Have we established "intent" yet? I think the guy went nuts and intended to commit suicide so he wouldn't be shipped out to the war, since he gave away all his possessions.
Posted by: Dave on November 25, 2009 at 12:41 PM | PERMALINK
She's talking about terrorists ON THE GROUND. Since the 9/11 attacks took place up in the air, they don't count.
Oh, and, they were really on Clinton's watch, because he was the one who warned about OBL. (This is the really tough jujitsu move right here.) And Bush hadn't been in office long enough (or had enough warnings, two or three or four don't count) for that to be on his tally sheet.
And since they never pinned the anthrax on a Muslim, that's not terrorism either. If it was a non-Muslim who did it, it was just a crime.
And the sniper? Even tho he had a Muslim name, he wasn't a terrorist because, um, well. Um. He just wasn't, OK?

I think it's a trial balloon. If Perino gets away with that claim, no GOP candidate will ever have to make an effort to say anything even vaguely resembling the truth. They will literally say anything at all. George W. Bush was a Democrat. Ronald Reagan brought us out of the Depression. Sarah Palin is still a virgin. Canada is about to invade New Hampshire. John McCain single-handedly liberated Berlin in WWII with a flashlight and scissors.

Typical Republican parsing and exaggeration. If you asked about those other instances, she would hem and haw and finally say that she meant to say "there were no foreign terrorist attacks on American soil since 9/11".
That would be true but not nearly as meaningful. Clinton could make the same claim, for about the same length of time, for the balance of his term after the first World Trade Center bombing. And he did it without the kinds of blatant violations of our constitution that Bush engaged in.
If you point that out, they will complain about the embassy attacks, Oklahoma City and the U.S.S. Cole and then try to change the subject before you can mention the anthrax attacks, the D.C. sniper and all the attacks on our troops and our allies overseas.
But as long as the press lets them get away with the wording Dana Perino used, they can make a much more impressive claim and even people who know better will subconsciously accept the framing that Bush/Cheney kept us safe.

There are plenty of non-sexist things you can call her to get your point across.
Also, Clinton Clinton Clinton Clinton Clinton Clinton Clinton Clinton Clinton Clinton Clinton Clinton Clinton Clinton Clinton Clinton. Can't you all see that all previous terrorist attacks including Pearl Harbor were his fault. You couldn't expect Bush to be in charge in less than a year, the overwhelming power that is Clinton kept him from really preparing for anything.

tanstaafl,
"Clinton could make the same claim, for about the same length of time, for the balance of his term after the first World Trade Center bombing. And he did it without the kinds of blatant violations of our constitution that Bush engaged in."
Not to mention Clinton sent a Special Forces team to pluck the mastermind of the first World Trade Center attack, Ramzi Yousef, out of Pakistan and return him to the U.S. for a PUBLIC TRIAL IN NEW YORK CITY (the horrors !). He is serving a 240-year prison term, plus another life sentence just in case, all to be spent in solitary confinement. His 5 co-conspirators involved in the bombing were also captured by the Clinton administration, and all are also serving life prison terms.
Wayda getter done.
