PALIN AND THE OTHER MEDICARE.... Former half-term Gov. Sarah Palin (R) was asked a question the other day about Canada's Medicare system. The question wasn't especially serious -- it came from a satirical television show -- but the answer was pretty interesting.

At a recent stop on her "Going Rogue" book tour, Sarah Palin told Canadian comedian Mary Walsh that Canada should get rid of its public health care system.

Walsh is the co-creator and star of This Hour Has 22 Minutes -- a nightly news parody show in the same vein as The Daily Show -- and she arrived in character, as the conservative Marg Delahunty, to the Borders where Palin (the "Alaskan Aphrodite") was signing books.

"I just wanted to ask you if you have any words of encouragement for Canadian conservatives who have worked so hard to try to diminish the kind of socialized medicine we have up there." Walsh shouted to Palin as she approached the table.

Palin's handlers tried to help her by ushering Walsh out of the Borders, but Palin could not be deterred. When Palin left the signing, Walsh caught up with her in the parking lot, where Palin suggested that Canada should get rid of its public health care system. "Keep the faith," Palin said, "because common sense conservatism can be plugged in there in Canada too. In fact, Canada needs to reform its health care system and let the private sector take over some of what the government has absorbed."

A few things to consider here. First, as Igor Volsky explained, Palin's confused about the role of the private sector in the Canadian system.

Second, Palin may be convinced that Canada "needs to reform its health care system," but Canadians strongly disagree. (Indeed, the last thing most of the industrialized world wants is a health care system more like ours.)

And third, if Palin thinks Canada's Medicare system should be at least partially privatized, does she also believe America's Medicare system, which is very similar, should also be partially privatized? Indeed, would destroying Medicare as we know it be part of what she considers "common-sense conservatism"?

Governess Palin can see the dangers of Canada's socialized medicine from her front porch. America would be wise to heed her warnings.

Well, that's odd. I mean, she can see Canada from her house, right?

Palin's appeal to the base is that she's not afraid to pop off about stuff she's clueless about. She's got zipperoo! So what if she's almost always wrong? Real democracy means putting an airhead's opinion on the same level as a policy wonk's.

Now that Palin is not Gov anymore, I wonder if she needs to rely on a private insurance plan. If so, I wonder if she knows it.

The wolf shall resign as governor of Alaska ,
and the Hyenas shall laugh down loudly with the kids ,
the calves , the liars with the fatuous rich mans 24 hour news toy ,
And a little child shall lead them , if in the dirty diapers you see heaven the wolf snarls so sweetly for .

"Indeed, would destroying Medicare as we know it be part of what she considers "common-sense conservatism"?"

Uh - YES! This seems to describe the entire Republican Party as well.

Why ask why?

This woman is queen of the rubes; virtually every time she opens her mouth a whole lot of stupid falls out. Why bother dissecting it? It's Sarah Palin, for crying out loud - that's shorthand for "clueless, misinformed and dishonest." The phrase "Sarah Palin said" is your cue to disregard the veracity or validity of whatever follows.

Palin Policy is to Medicare as Palin Science is to evolution. That is to say, she is red-blooded Xtian Taliban (aka Rethug).

Asking 'her royal lowness' questions like this one at every stop on her 'con' tour might be a fun way to reveal to the wider world once again just how vacuous and wacky the former beauty queen runner up really is. This could cause all kinds of disruption to the wonderful world of right wing propaganda. Then we make the movie "Sarah and Me".

It was interesting to watch C-SPAN the other day, as they covered a Palin book signing. While waiting for the "Former half-term Gov. Sarah Palin" to appear they asked her fans why they liked her.

Answers like, "She believes in the Constitution", "she's not from Washington," and "she's down to earth, she's just like us" were endlessly offered as her appeal.

Vapid wins the day. . .

From this statement, we can determine one thing:

Palin doesn't care enough to not only think through the question but also think through the answer. She just throws it out there, parroting any other 'we gotta privatize and dereg' response that summarizes most of what the GOP stands for since 1992.

And the reason why she doesn't care?

She's NOT really running for the Presidency. She's not. She can't be that clueless about her chances: her primary challengers will shred her to pieces and if she survives that there's no way any Dem or Indy will swing to vote for her. No, just look at what she's doing: selling books, selling t-shirts, selling herself as a celebrity more than a politician or political leader. She's rolling like it's a band tour across the arenas. She's not in this to win the White House: she's in this to make money.

So why should she even think about actual issues? The issues would trip up her book sales. No, sadly no her best responses will always be the cookie-cutter, book-review-blurb, prefab ad sales pitch that would get her laughed out the offices of Sterling Cooper.

If you wanna waste money on a book, buy mine. >:-)

I have a question.

I haven't seen any Dems repeating (or even saying) that the right wants to rid the US of Medicare. Am I missing what's out there or are some Dems onto this?

Meets or exceeds your expectations of a boor from the sticks of a 3rd world country?

Excceds.

Sarah's appeal: She doesn't know very much and has no compunction to show it. And first of all, people admire a feisty person whose spectrum of aversion they can relate to.

Posted by: SRW1 on November 27, 2009 at 11:34 AM | PERMALINK

PaulW: Bingo. No way in hell a run for office would last very long. She'd be laughed out of town if her views and (lack of) intelligence actually had to try to lead a campaign. And at this point, no one legitimate is going to take her on as a second. She's hit the jackpot. Getting soeone else to write her books, her twits, her speaches. All she has to do is open her mouth in a friendly environment, and the money just pours in.

Ohio Rick: its "Starve-the-beast" philosophy. Been around since Reagan. I haven't heard of Dems discussing either. But then Dems haven't been very vocal over the last few decades.

I have a good friend who lives in Canada. Six weeks ago, he noted blood in his urine. After worrying about it awhile, he went to the doctor and had tests. No cause was found until he had a cytoscopy (the bladder equivalent of a colonoscopy) where two cysts were found last Friday. On Monday, he went in and had a biopsy (note there were no delays, no waiting list). The total cost to him out of pocket was Total pocket cost Can$30 for PSA test, $14 for antibiotics, $33 for Tylenol 3 and a 2nd course of Cipro.

And this is a system Palin thinks should be done away with?

If I was in US? $15K easy.

Would be curious to know if Palin intends to use her new millions to pay her parents medical bills and allow them to escape from the socialized horrors of Medicare. Just askin'.

Palin really is the "shoot from the hip" and "rely on the gut" that GW Bush said he was. She will never think any problem out, just rush to a solution. In this, she really is like most people - but not what you want in a president.

"common-sense conservatism"

Given the current bunch who call themselves conservatives those words do not belong together. This should be in the dictionary with the definition of 'cognitive dissonance'.

An excellent question, and one that someone in one of her may talk show appearences needs to ask her.
Social Security also, too.

The RepoTaliban have a lot of hidden agendae but they also have the Palins, and Sessions and other Repo parrots blurt out their dirty secrets on occasion.
Sarah may have tipped a hint on that one.
