INHOFE UNIMPRESSED BY STARS AND SCIENCE.... A growing number of officials recognize the national security implications of global climate change. The NYT recently ran a report noting the ways in which a warming planet "will pose profound strategic challenges to the United States in coming decades, raising the prospect of military intervention to deal with the effects of violent storms, drought, mass migration and pandemics.... Such climate-induced crises could topple governments, feed terrorist movements or destabilize entire regions."
The Central Intelligence Agency even intends to develop a new division that would focus on intelligence gathering related to national security, unstable governments, and climate change.
And given the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee's efforts to pass a climate bill in this Congress, the panel recently heard from a variety of retired U.S. military leaders, all of whom agreed that it's time to change America's energy policy.
The NYT asked Sen. James Inhofe, a right-wing Oklahoma Republican and the Senate's most ardent global warming denier, about the "threat to national security by destabilizing developing countries." He replied by questioning the integrity of the military leaders who accept the evidence and are concerned about the consequences of climate change.
"That's the most ludicrous thing. They looked around and they found, I think, five generals to testify before the committee. Well, that's 5 generals out of 4,000 retired generals that say that. There are a lot of generals who don't like to be out of the limelight. They'd like to get back in."
Generally, in congressional circles, a certain respect for decorated generals and admirals is expected. Except in Inhofe's case, if they accept science he chooses to ignore, they deserve to be trashed publicly.
Inhofe's developed a reputation for being America's Worst Senator. It's well deserved.

Americans have always been deniers, they have to be forced into making decisions. They dragged their heels in WW2, until they were attacked, they pushed poor people into mortgages they could not afford, thinking the gravy train would be there forever, they think they can drill oil and use the worlds resources forever, they do not want to believe science, the chinese are going to be the world leaders in solar energy and wind power, americans have denied a crisis in healthcare and close their eyes while their countrymen are dying through lack of it.Climate change is one thing they cannot correct in a few months if they are doing what they always do and using 25% of the worlds resources for about 5% of the worlds population.

It's well deserved.
Doubly so since he has so many competitors for the honor.

actually, inhofe is hardly unique in criticizing members of the military: to the right-wingers in congress, the only members of the military above criticism are the ones who agree with the right-wingers.
anyone else? they're just liberal scum and deserve whatever criticism they get according to inhofe and many others in the gop.

You mean the science based on manipulated data?

It's time to demand that all who want to be elected officials show us that they have mastered logic and are capable of critical thinking. I realize that may decimate the number of elected officials in many areas of the country where your ability to look good and say whatever your voters want you to say is all that counts, but we cannot afford so much foolishness in the future.

inhofe's tunnel vision about climate change can turn on a dime when he gets the scent of blood.
if there's a buncha killin' to be done to protect our way of life, well, our boy jimmy will be on it like stink on shit -- even if its over the 'myth' of climate change...

Yes, Ron Nasty, reactionaries try to manipulate the data for science all the time, but they are so ignorant of how science works that they generally just make fools of themselves as Inhofe has done.

If anyone from Oklahoma has ever wondered why people outside Oklahoma frequently look at Oklahoma and its residents in the negative way they do, those Oklahomans need look no further than the two senators they've currently sent to Washington as examples of why that attitude exists.
I can't think of anything more frustrating than being a progressive, intelligent person who lives in Oklahoma - I talk to them all the time, and they really are a frustrated bunch, living around that much stupid. The only thing I can think of more frustrating would be to be an intelligent progressive living in Mississippi or Alabama - the co-capitals of stupid.

"the chinese are going to be the world leaders in solar energy and wind power"
The only thing this country is concerned with is how much junk Walmart sold on the day after Thanksgiving.
I'm afraid there is so little interest (public and official) in alternative energy as a policy and industry that we can assume that door has already been shut. China will corner the market on it.
I think it's very telling that from a congressional point of view, Inhofe is the go to person for opinion on the matter of climate change. I'm not sure how that hapened, but he's the voice that's always given the stage.

Global warming is a hoax, but if it can be used to convince liberals to spend more on national security then it's a useful hoax.

As person who has espoused progressive causes before most of the people on this board were born, I worry about a litmus test regarding man-made global warming. Putting people who are not as sure as some in a deniers camp is a big mistake. The Imhoffs of this world are wrong about almost everything but may be on to something here in contradicting the absolute certainty of some scientists.

I suggest to Al he take Chinese as a second language. Renewable energy only makes sense to create jobs and save consumers money in the long run, even if warming is a hoax. What if "them Muslims" cut off the oil spiget, or even worse, them terrorists? Be askeared, very askeared.

Breaking News
President Obama has directed his advisers to seek the vote of Ihnhofe for climate legislation in the spirit of bipartisanship, and told the senators on the respective committees to mark up the bill to the Oklahoma senator's satisfaction.

Global warming is a hoax? And so is the disappearing sand in hawaii.
You guys rip on Oklahoma, but I live in Indiana. Despite the fact it's "not" in the bible belt, you wouldn't believe it by the level of intelligence in this shit state. The number of times I've heard phrases from coworkers like "there's as much proof for creationism as there is for.." or "If you read the bible and really look at what it says....the people in the middle east only care about religion..." is ridiculous. I just have to keep reminding myself that I won't be here that much longer.

Just to recap Senator Moron's greatest hits:
1) Climate change "greates hoax ever perpetrated on the American people"
2) West Bank belongs to Israel "because God said so".
3) More "outraged by the outrage" than by the Abu Ghraib torture
4) Never had "any sort of homosexual relationship" in his family
5) birthers "have a point"
This is one sick, twisted individual. Truly a horrible human being.

How do guys like Inhofe get elected in the first place? I guess the Neandrathals never really died off, they live on (and vote) in places like Oklahoma, Alabama and S.C.

Inhofe is an Okie oil money besotted prostitute and a traitor.
"Al" is just a fool.

Since when is the rank of general evidence of credibility on global warming? I thought their area of expertise was national defense. Why is Inhofe so opposed to these generals doing their jobs? What a traitor.

Ron Nasty, Doc and Rod. Two vowels and six consonants; is that all you're allowed for trolling nowadays? If you think* that you have evidence that refutes gobal warming, it is your job to present it. Citing such things as facts, articles by climate scientists; things like that. Coy little references to the latest delusional frothing at RougeState, FootsieFacts or Nappytime News (whatever the one with the pj's is) just won't cut it.
*(I know, I know! And if cows could fly...)

Please do not ask the non-scientists to present data about man-made global warming. The politicians, commentators and scientists who are certain have to convince the rest of us if we are vote for good policy. I do not know what the agenda of some bloggers is but attacking good progressives who are yet to be convinced is a bad way to engender support for any agenda.

Perhaps the climate is not changing much in Oklahoma or Washington. People like Inhofe, possibly the stupidest and most unimaginative man to ever hold public office, can seldom see further than the end of their own nose.
Posted by: Mark on November 29, 2009 at 7:05 PM | PERMALINK
James Inhofe works for oil companies. He has always worked for oil companies. He does the bidding of the people who put him into office, and oil companies want to deny global warming as long as humanly possible. when and if Oil companies decide to acknowledge global-warming, Inhofe will immediately get on that bus.
Please, James Inhofe is just a male whore for Big Oil, always has been, always will be. He's not stupid, he's not deluded, he's simply doing what he has to do: obeying his masters' commands.

I guess Inhofe and his ilk think Svante Arrhenius was in on the big scam back in 1896?
Ron Nasty: the theory and data have been around for decades. Haven't you heard of overzealous cops and prosecutors framing a guilty guy to ensure he's convicted? It's still wrong, but it beats framing an innocent person, the way the deniers do.

Do you believe the Iraq War was base on lies?
Are you okay with a War on Climate Change based on lies?

Oklahoma was a Dust Bowl disaster that people fled in the 30's until it was rescued by Federal government conservation efforts.
Now it sends assholes like Imhofe and Coburn to DC to preach that government is bad and needs to be prevented from doing anything.
