THE ACORN OBSESSION ISN'T PRETTY.... Several far-right House Republicans have been demanding congressional hearings into ACORN. Dems have ignored the nonsense, which led eight GOP lawmakers to host a pseudo-hearing -- technically labeled a "forum" -- on the community group.

Dave Weigel was on hand for the event, and seems to have enjoyed the nuttiness.

With most of Washington's attention focused on the health care debate happening a few blocks away in the Senate, or President Obama's upcoming speech on troop escalation in Afghanistan, Smith and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the sponsors of the hearing, were able to attractive an impressive amount of media. Six cameras were staged around the room, and national reporters filled out the seats behind the witness stand alongside members of ACORN-investigating conservative organizations like the Capital Research Center and Big Government. Officially titled a "Joint Forum on ACORN," the hearing gave Republicans a chance to re-air allegations against the controversial activist group, which lost its long-standing federal funding in two lopsided September votes.

The eight Republican members of Congress who showed up for the hearing didn't disappoint. With one exception, they labeled ACORN a "criminal enterprise" with close and current ties to the highest levels of the Obama administration and the labor movement.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Tex.), who presumably would be the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee if Republicans take back the House, insisted the attorney general should "appoint a special prosecutor to investigate ACORN," in part because, as Smith sees it, "President Obama previously served as ACORN's lawyer." (He didn't.)

Rep. Darrel Issa (R-Calif.) thinks the White House has become "the war room for ACORN's political machine."

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) brought a brought a plastic bucket of acorns with him -- seriously -- and continued to argue that former White House Communications Director Anita Dunn's long-planned resignation had something to do with ACORN. To bolster his attacks, King encouraged a hearing witness to watch a Fox News documentary.

When a caucus, or at least a part of it, falls victim to paranoid delusions, it's not a pretty sight.

They should also hold hearings, or "forums" if you insist, into the many unanswered questions surrounding the Clinton Presidency.

Oh, but it is. It is a very pretty sight. What fun...

"When a caucus, or at least a part of it, falls victim to paranoid delusions, it's not a pretty sight."

Falls victim to paranoid delusions, Steve? Don't you mean "abuses a complicit media to cynically distort facts and lie"? Because although there are some rather dim bulbs in Congress, and a few that arguably broke their filaments years ago, it's difficult to see this event as anything other than a well-planned part of a campaign of disinformation.

A less pretty sight is the national media swallowing the delusion hook, line and sinker.

In the eyes of millions of Americans, ACORN is simply shorthand for "scary black people who want to destroy America." If you think this is bad, wait until 2011, when the Republican-led Congress actually start "investigations" (i.e. partisan witchhunts) into ACORN. Or in 2013, when (assuming Obama even gets reelected), they impeach him for some trumped up bit of ACORN-related nonsense.

King brought a bucket of ACORNs? He hangs out with them? Takes them with him on official business? Why, I think he's actually an ACORN collaborator! Psst - Republicans - don't trus tthis guy. Indeed, you should probably run him out of town tarred and feathered! Get to it. . .

WOW AL! "They should also hold hearings, or "forums" if you insist, into the many unanswered questions surrounding the Clinton Presidency." How about the BUSH administration and the criminal activity that took place THERE? Oh but I forget...it's NEVER your guys fault...thank GOD a democrat is elected once in awhile...then you can whine and snivel for 8-12 years...it's all good.

Much as attorneys are fined for bringing forth frivolous lawsuits (in some states, anyway), when members of Congress perform acts such as this, and which have no clear, identifiable results other than grandstanding, there should be fines as well. This is our money as taxpayers that is being used to further a political agenda, and to further the ideologies of adherents of that agenda and not the best interests of the populace.

Of course, no one would dare do such a thing to members of Congress' chummy club. Fines and rules are for the little people.

i'm beginning to love me some steven king from iowa -- the dude is starting to be freakier than the one from maine.

(and speaking of acorns...al, like teh olde blind pig, finally pulled one in -- hook, line and sinker... you go, al!)

Obama and congressional democrats could have put the kibosh on this bullshit when it first began. They chose not to do so.

So fuck Acorn.

Or, better yet, the democratic party.

The choice is yours.

Obama and congressional democrats could have put the kibosh on this bullshit when it first began. They chose not to do so.

Huh ????????

Anybody with Republican neighbors or relatives knows that ACORN is readily on the tip of their tongues when any discussion of politics comes up. Glenn Beck is worth every penny the "oligarhy" is paying him.

"Huh?"
_____________________________

I suspect he means by "Obama and congressional democrats could have put the kibosh on this bullshit when it first began. They chose not to do so" that Obama and the Congressional Dems could have gotten a special prosecutor to immediately look into whether criminal wrongdoing existed in the Bush administration over--well, a whole range of major issues. But this wasn't done, in large part because many Dems were complicit, and as a result the Republicans know now they can lie and attack with impunity.

Posted by: Balakirev on December 2, 2009 at 2:04 PM | PERMALINK

"..because many Dems were complicit..".

Complicit? In what exactly? An organization dedicated to registering voters?

Don't go mistaking chicken livered-democrats for people who threaten a chickenshit oligarchy.

I don't know about ACORN, but these guys are definitely cornholes.

Awesome! How long before Lamar Smith shoots an acorn with a pistol in his backyard to prove some kind of conspiracy like then House Jud. chair Dan Burton did with a pumpkin during the Clinton years.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) brought a brought a plastic bucket of acorns with him [...] -- Steve Benen

We have a phrase in Polish, which describes a guy like him: "the man (is) like an oak tree but his balls (are) like acorns". But I never heard of a guy who's been castrated so many times, nor have ever heard of one who was able to keep regrowing his balls, however small. What is he? A lizard?

I really want to believe that, otherwise we have some complete idiots in congress.
Sadly I think the later is the case.

Why should Democrats "ignore the nonsense" instead of calling hearings with ACORN representatives there to testify about their efforts to pass predatory lending laws and Republican efforts to suppress minority voting and housing issues? Maybe one of the fired federal prosecutors can testify to the huge amounts of money and time spent trying to prove election fraud but found nothing. Why play defense when you can hammer your opponents?

Posted by: Th on December 2, 2009 at 3:07 PM | PERMALINK

It seems the time is ripe for the Senate to have a hearing or "forum" if you will, to reconvene the Un-American Activities Committee to look into the possiblity that there may be some Reds among us.

Paranoid, eh? We all know that the only reason Obama got elected is because Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse voted for him, like a gazillion times!

I think Mr. Beck even saw Daisy Duck at his polling station.

Officially titled a "Joint Forum on ACORN,"

The only thing "joint" about it was what they were smoking...

And we have to pay these people for this crap...for wasting our time...out of all the problems facing this country these delusional reps focus on a successful and dedicated community organizing group who have done more to combat poverty than these idiots are even capable of.

When I see a headline saying "...candidate has connections to ACORN", I think of it as a big plus. as a candidate who cares about combating poverty and getting citizens registered to vote.

These guys are like school yard bullies always picking on the have nots. I used to think Iowa had intelligent critical voters...but not since King. ACORN has never been indicted or convicted of anything and if it were registering as many repubs as dems these goobers wouldn't be saying a word.

Note they do nothing about "proven" culprits like KBR, Haliburton or Blackwater busted and fined many times for cheating the gov.and still getting huge gov. contracts. Someone should be shouting that at this ACORN lynching.

While we are on the subject of baseless accusations, has anyone looked to see if Lamar Smith was involved with Glenn Beck in that case of a rape/murder that Beck doesn't want to talk about? I'm not making an accusation, but no one else is willing to ask the question.
