IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME.... I'm not surprised Sarah Palin would lend credence to the "birther" nonsense; I'm surprised it took her this long.

Alex Koppelman posted this transcript of Palin's on-air chat yesterday with far-right talk-show host Rusty Humphries.

HUMPHRIES: Would you make the birth certificate an issue if you ran?

PALIN: Um, I think the public, rightfully, is still making it an issue. I don't have a problem with that. I don't know if I would have to bother to make it an issue, because I think enough members of the electorate still want answers.

HUMPHRIES: Do you think it's a fair question to be looking at?

PALIN: I think it's a fair question, just like I think past associations, past voting records, all of that is fair game. You know, I gotta tell you, too, I think our campaign, the McCain-Palin campaign, didn't do a good enough job in that area. We didn't call out Obama and some of his associates on their records and what their beliefs were, and perhaps what their future plans were, and I don't think that was fair to voters, to not have done our jobs as candidates and as a campaign to bring to light a lot of things that now we're seeing made manifest in the administration.

HUMPHRIES: I mean, truly, if your past is fair game and your kids are fair game, certainly Obama's past should be. I mean, we want to treat men and women equally, right?

PALIN: Hey, you know, that's a great point. That weird conspiracy theory freaky thing that people talk about, that Trig isn't my real son, a lot of people say, "Well, you need to produce his birth certificate, you need to prove that he's your kid," which we have done, but yeah, so maybe we should reverse that and use the same type of thinking on the other one. [emphasis added]

That last point about the bizarre notion that Palin's son is not her son was especially odd. The former half-term governor seems to think questions about Trig's birth certificate are a "weird conspiracy theory freaky thing" -- she does have a way with words -- but instead of arguing that all of the nonsense be taken off the table for everyone, Palin wants to see "the same type of thinking" applied to the president.

Ideally, this is the kind of inanity that would lead polite company to realize Sarah Palin isn't the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree, and her credibility as a national figure would be permanently ruined. But this relates back to what we talked about earlier this week: among conservative Republicans, the nonsensical fringe has been mainstreamed. The line between GOP adults and GOP nutjobs has been blurred, if not erased altogether. (It's more than likely the Republican base will be even more impressed with Palin now.)

Both sides of the aisle have their crazies, but only one side thinks their crazies are sane.

Update: On Facebook, Palin walks back the birther remarks, at least a little. She's tough to understand sometimes.

Can a stupid question still be a fair question?

I dunno, this seems kinda over-hyped to me. She didn't sound particularly serious.

I guess the short-lived attempt to stop writing about Palin all the time has been abandoned?

I'll go you one better.

If Nanook had failed to endorse Birtherism, a segment of her base would have denounced her as forcefully as the anti-immigrant crowd has now turned on Lou Dobbs.

well, she might be getting a little smarter. That one bit, where she says that she herself doesn't need to demand to see Obama's b.c. because so many other people are asking about it, is a nice li'l dog whistle to birthers to keep at it. No one seriously running for Pres will bring up Obama's b.c., bu that doesn't mean supporters can't. "Keep asking. Keep the controversy alive. I can't ask...but I'm with you."

Well, there's obviously too much Palin news to fit on Sullivan's blog! Steve is just taking one for the team by soaking up the excess.

What's interesting (I cringe to apply that adjective to anything Palin-related) is that she has said more than once, including in her book, that she faults the McCain campaign for not going after Obama harder on Wright etc.

Here is the rising star of the GOP, whose main response to a devastating electoral defeat is to complain that the campaign didn't spend enough time taking cheap potshots at her opponent's personal life. Talk about bereft of ideas!

The Republican Candidate Purity Test™ is getting wonderfully close to 100%! As someone here once said, "the Republicans are busy preparing their ship for ludicrous speed." I'd just add that the ship has now left dock.

Beware of Mike Huckabee.

Posted by: coral on December 4, 2009 at 9:17 AM | PERMALINK

If Palin finds an equivalence between birtherism and the Trig thing she should be asked to produce proof of a mainstream democratic politician peddling it in the same way she is now doing. Failing to do so, she should apologize and then shut up.

Please can she just go away, I would be happy to never hear her name again.

Beware of Mike Huckabee.

Would this be the Mike Huckabee who paroled a man while ignoring his violent history both in and out of prison, and who recently murdered four police officers in Tacoma? That Mike Huckabee?

...instead of arguing that all of the nonsense be taken off the table for everyone, Palin wants to see "the same type of thinking" applied to the president.

Palin is at least astute enough to realize that the National Enquirer, TMZ, Perez Hilton and Matt Drudge-driven media is not going to stop with the inane lines of questioning no matter how many times we ask. The media has neither a liberal nor conservative bias, but a libertarian bias, and the purpose of the 24/7 scandalmongering is to destroy the public's confidence in government, thus allowing the producers, America's rightful leaders, to rise to the top and re-order our society as they see fit.

Let me be the first to say, "who the fark is 'Rusty Humphries'?" I guess when you don't know anything about anything, as Palin you must run to the far-right woodwork to chat with some fellow whose name sound like a wingnut porn star with a Palin fetish.

I'm not surprised Sarah Palin would lend credence to the "birther" nonsense ...

Sorry, Steve, but Sarah Palin can't lend credence to anything. She has no credibility.

"Well, you need to produce his birth certificate, you need to prove that he's your kid," which we have done

Actually, I'm pretty sure she never did.

She wasn't asked to produce his birth certificate, she was asked to provide information about her medical history - her only attempt at compliance to this was on the evening before Election Day, when the campaign produced a brief letter from her GP stating she was in good health.

Her book reveals she had two miscarriages, which were never mentioned in the letter. So not only is Palin lying, she is lying about her own lie.

Posted by: g on December 4, 2009 at 10:01 AM | PERMALINK

I'm going to go out on a limb here. I don't think Palin is a birther - the context suggests that she thinks it is a nonsense conspiracy theory on par with the suggestion that Trig was her son. Her point seems to be that any question is "fair game" -i.e. voters have a "right" to ask it - no matter how silly or conspiratorial-minded.

On the other hand, I think it shows once again that she has not mastered English as a first language. She said the public was "rightfully" still making Obama's birth an issue. I don't think she realizes that "rightfully" and "have a right to" mean two entirely different things in our language.

Posted by: JohnC on December 4, 2009 at 10:08 AM | PERMALINK

JohnC, sorry, but you give Palin way too much credit for subtlety. As you indicate "her point seems to be that any question is "fair game."

Well, I kind of remember someone recently being drummed out of the White House because several years ago he put his signature on a petition in re 9/11.

There are a lot of unanswered legitimate questions with regard to what happened on 9/11/01. There are no legitimate questions with respect to the president's citizenship status. On the other hand, there are legitimate questions as to whether or not a child being used as a continuous campaign prop by a person posing as a politician seeking higher office is actually her child.

Palin scored twice here. She gives her base what they're looking for by signing on to the birther stuff AND she points out what a victim she is both because peeps are questioning Trig's parentage and because she's such a martyr having a "retarded" child.

Posted by: karen marie on December 4, 2009 at 10:31 AM | PERMALINK

I agree with g, I don't think she ever did produce the birth certificate for Trig.

Posted by: VOR on December 4, 2009 at 10:52 AM | PERMALINK

Has anyone ever asked Palin to produce her high school diploma, or proof that she graduated? I, for one, can't figure out how she could have, unless she openly admits that she has spent the last twenty years smoking moose antlers, which has destroyed most of her brain cells.
Honestly, I think the stupidity question should be formally answered. Let's see her transcripts and SAT scores. An IQ test would be nice. Heck, medical proof of brain function would be a start.

Posted by: Tim H on December 4, 2009 at 11:15 AM | PERMALINK

On a more serious note, I don't agree that her answer was a clever move. Birtherism is the fringe of the fringe- even Coulter rejects it outright. You could also read it as an infringement of state's rights- the only person who is officially empowered to determine the validity of the birth certificate is the SecState of Hawaii. Other states are required to respect that. Anything else would be undue interference. At least to the states rights believers.

Posted by: Tim H on December 4, 2009 at 11:23 AM | PERMALINK

And Camille Paglia will sing her praises yet again in her next column, adding a few remarks of her own about how suspicious it is that Obama hasn't produced his birth certificate (blithely oblivious to the fact that he did over a year ago) and rhetorically asking what he must be hiding.

I made the mistake of reading the comment thread on the link, and it's the usual nausea inducing conspiracy theory claptrap. But one commenter was at least helpfully (although, I'm sure, inadvertently) did blurt out the truth: "Why is not asking for his birth certificate a bad thing? I’ll grab a anything to get this creep out of office!" That's what it's all about, of course -- not whether or not they seriously believe he isn't a citizen, but that it's the only excuse they can dream up to challenge his legitimacy, and to try to overturn the will of the voters in 2008.

Posted by: T-Rex on December 4, 2009 at 11:25 AM | PERMALINK

she should apologize and then shut up

Yeah, right. Being Republican means never having to say you're sorry.

So a woman married to a man who thinks Alaska should secede wants to look into the beliefs of candidates' associates. Am I missing something here?

Posted by: huh? on December 4, 2009 at 12:25 PM | PERMALINK

This is all "Excitable Andy's" fault.
As long as there are crazies like Andrew Sullivan asking for Trig's birth certificate (last time I looked Trig wasn't running or presently POTUS .. or is he ?), it will be fair game to see that of others.

Posted by: Neo on December 4, 2009 at 12:47 PM | PERMALINK

I suggest folks here all read Nixonland. Sarah Palin is a clever, intelligent woman, and we underestimate her at our peril and the nation's peril. She is no well educated and she is incurious. This is not exclusive to the pragmatic intelligence and ruthlessnes needed to win elections. She is also dogmatic and basically filters all information what Lord Bacon (via Stephen Jay Gould) called "idols of the theater and tribe", she filters everything through her adherence to the "ol' time" religion as it has been mixed with an equally fundamental belief in Libertarian economics along with the the vast cyncism of Movement Conservative, where any club you can beat your opponent with, no matter how outlandish or thinly related to the truth, is used because your success is essential to save America from those "Liberal" traitors.

Posted by: rickstersherpa on December 4, 2009 at 2:21 PM | PERMALINK

And herein Palin demonstrates in a nice, succinct way a key difference between conservatives and progressives.

A Progressive suffers some unfortunate setback in life, and asks "How can I prevent someone else from suffering the same way I did?"

A Conservative suffers some unfortunate setback in life, and says "Everyone else should have to suffer the same damned way I do!"
