THE NATURE AND VOLUME OF THE THREATS.... Ronald Kessler published a book earlier this year that noted, citing Secret Service sources, that threats against President Obama had risen 400% as compared to his immediate predecessor. In October, a Congressional Research Service report concluded that threats against the president this year have been "unprecedented."

The New York Times reports, however, that the number of threats has "leveled off in recent months," and ten months into his presidency, Obama "now receives about the same as his two most recent predecessors." That's the good news. The bad news is "the nature of the threats" remain a serious concern for officials.

A review of dozens of court records and police reports by The New York Times uncovered an array of cases, most of which did not gain public attention even as they rang alarm bells at some of the highest levels of the government. Some involved suspects with a history of violence or mental illness and easy access to guns and explosives, while others involved men whose menacing talk was ultimately deemed to be just that by the authorities.

Some of the threats are nothing short of chilling, most notably the airport security guard in New Jersey, "who had 43 guns and allegedly hollow-point bullets at home," and who told his co-workers about "cutting a hole in a fence to shoot Mr. Obama on the day before the president was to land at Newark International Airport."

It is encouraging that the quantity of the threats has lessened. I'd like to think some of the right-wing rage, accompanied by the near-collapse of the economy, has dissipated as the economy has slowly improved and the president's agenda has turned out to be less scary than some of his more unhinged detractors feared.

But that doesn't change the fact that those who talk about doing harm to the president have some very scary ideas.

Racism is as American as apple pie.

I really didn't think Obama could get elected -- until I did by summer '08. But I stupidly, I didn't think about how the racists in this country would react after the election.

They're still there...and much of this gibberish among organized performances like the teabaggers are really just 'polite' ways these racist haters can get in the streets and act out.

I don't know what to think. Just a couple of days ago, Bob Somerby (Daily Howler) had a column refuting the meme (if it is so) that Obama has received more threats than previous presidents (http://www.dailyhowler.com/dh120409.shtml). I don't doubt there are serious wackos out there, but maybe it's time to call in some of the rhetoric?

It's a Catch-22 situation; either the MSM reports these 'attempts' on the President's life, and encourages copy cat behavior, or, by their silence, we become less watchful of those around us.

And then there are the high profile politicians egging on the 'Birthers', et al. I'm looking at YOU, Sarah. . .

But of course, these threats are NOT coming from domestic terrorists. No sir, not at all.

For most Americans, the state of the economy has not slowly improved. Rather, it's been getting worse every month, but at a slower and slower rate, and there's hope now that things will finally start to get better. You can't eat GDP, you need a job.

Hmmmm, makes you wonder just what is the vetting process for NJ airport security guards.

DAY:

I have to agree. Too many public figures (Palin, Beck, etc) are acting in ways that are indistinguishable from someone legitimately trying to incite someone to assassinate the president, while maintaining "deniability".

If they were hired during the Bush admin? Loyalty to Dear Leader and to The Ideology was virtually the only qualification for any federal government position.

This is related to the earlier post about discourse.

Why is it that teabaggers and their ilk are fighting mad, about the president's efforts to provide healthcare to poor and middle class Americans but, not a peep from the teabaggers about Aetna tossing 600k Americans out of their health plan?

If some obscure policy group suggests an efficiancy related to breast cancer they scream death panel but Aetna gouges them into foreclosure, you can hear crickets chirping from the right.

Glenn Beck twists the plain language from the president or the speaker into a 100 year government take over conspiracy.

The CEO of Aetna produces a memo that says in no uncertain terms they will raise their prices for the express purpose of getting more profit and kicking people out of their plan. Palin, Beck?

Because they're a bunch of gullible, uneducated morons.

What do I win?

I suppose this is "news" in the sense that it confirms what anyone with half a brain would consider obvious, but it's good to have confirmation.

Because as I said in a previous post, it is the Free Market in action. They will never (be told to) rebel against the "Free Market" unless, of course, their talking point providers can make more money by the market not being free.

The level of noise associated with President Obama that is rooted in hate and violence is measurably higher than for previous Democratic presidents ?
This the by now routine , or knee jerk , response to any figure not related to the republican party is acceptable for our friends on the "values" side of the bordello ?

As I remember, most assassinations and violence are done by the angry, the crazed, the haters of the status quo - basically, your everyday Democrat Liberal.

Since that time, the Secret Service has stated that Obama did, as has been reported, receive many more threats than other presidents, but only during the first few months. Now that has receded to a number comparable to other presidents.

This sounds like PR to me.

For numerous valid reasons, it's important for people to believe that the threats against Obama are no more than background levels, but that's certainly not true.

Steve A @ 2:35 PM -
"...most assasinations are done by the angry, the crazed, the haters of the status quo..."
1) 9/11 terrorists: rightwing, theonuts.
2) McVeigh, rightwing militia nut.
3) 1993 World Trade attack: Muslim theonuts.
4) 1983 Reagan attack: nut.
5) 1975 (I believe) Ford attacked by Fromm: antiwar nut (that's one).
6) 1963 Lee Harvey Oswald: was he a communist or a rightwing dupe?
7) 1951 Truman attack: Puerto Rican independence supporters.
8) 1932 Roosevelt (FD) attacked in Miami: anarchist.
9) 1912 Roosevelt (T) attacked: anarchist.
10) 1901 McKinley shot: anarchist.
11) 1881 Garfield: the proverbial "disappointed office seeker", so I gues he qualifies as a "hater of the status quo".
12) 1865 Lincoln shot: Booth, rightwing supporter of slavery.
There are also many occasions of bombings and murders during strikes, but those tactics were employed by both sides so I'm not including them.

"...basically, your everyday Democrat(sic)
Liberal."
Sounds rather more like your everyday, phallically-impaired, gun nut, but hey, even dolts are allowed their own opinions.
But not their own FACTS.
