TARGETING JOE IN CONNECTICUT.... In 2006, when Joe Lieberman lost the Democratic Senate nomination he claimed he wanted, the senator immediately created something called the Connecticut for Lieberman Party. After the election, the senator lost track of his "party" and made no effort to maintain it.

With that in mind, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee unveiled a new 30-second ad this morning, featuring the chairman of the Connecticut for Lieberman Party, John Mertens, blasting the senator's obstructionism on a public option as part of health care reform.

"Joe never forgets who he ran to represent: himself," Mertens tells viewers. After noting that Connecticut voters support a public option, "three to one," Mertens concludes, "Joe has a message for Democrats, and all the voters who want him to support the public option: it's not about you; it's all about Joe."

Responding to the ad, Lieberman's spokesperson referred to the public option as part of "the agenda of narrow ideological interest groups."

It's an odd thing to say. The ad itself cites a poll showing 68% of Lieberman's constituents supporting the idea. Are they all members of "narrow ideological interest groups," or is Lieberman just woefully out of touch?

Two predictions (both safe bets): (1) Lieberman has no intention of running again in 2012. (2) Lieberman will spend all his time between now and then working to destroy the Democratic Party.

The only uncertainty? Will Democrats continue to tolerate him as chairman of an important committee?

The point of the Senate is to be out of touch.
With the common lot, that is.

The longer these old men stay there,
and the richer they become as a result,
the more they get the point.

Lieberman should be the poster boy Connecticut activists use to push for a recall law. Can't say I've heard any news on that front, and it frankly surprises me.

Thanks, Steve. I've donated to air the ad:

Lieberman is a Republican. They create their own reality. He'll keep saying that the public option is "the agenda of narrow ideological interest groups" until either it's true, or enough media parrot the talking point that it may as well be.

As I remember, the fake leaders of the fake Connecticut for Lieberman Party somehow lost control of their party, and enemies of Lieberman took ocntrol of it. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

I'm fairly sure that you can't recall federal office-holders.

But CT should pass a sore loser law.

You write as though Lieberman cares what we think.

Posted by: rbe1 on December 7, 2009 at 1:37 PM | PERMALINK

Of course it's all about Joe. There's a reason he didn't create the Lieberman for Connecticut Party. We were trying to explain this to you three years ago.

I do hope this works, but I have yet to see any evidence Lieberman has the ability to feel shame.

If Lieberman wants to keep his seat, then at some point he'll switch to the Republican Party; either that or he'll run as an independent again. He'll delay the switch as long as the Democrats let him keep his committee chair.

Here's my predication: Lieberman, through his wife, has secured lucrative incentives to derail meaningful HCR. If he accomplishes his mission, he will receive massive compensation from the healthcare insurance companies vis-a-vie speaking engagements, consulting fees, etc.

This is Lying Joe's swan song.

"the agenda of narrow ideological interest groups"

So Joe is speaking for "the agenda of wide ideological interest groups". Acually, Connecticut is a narrow state, as compared to say Texas.

Posted by: Dave on December 7, 2009 at 2:02 PM | PERMALINK

Unless the support is 99.9% at the very least, it's "narrow". Just as a bill in the Senate isn't "bipartisan", unless at least 80-90 Senators sign on to it. Where have you been, Steve, while this New Political Dictionary of Common Terms was being compiled by our "friends" from the other side of the isle?

It's telling that he named "his" party "Connecticut for Lieberman" rather than "Lieberman for Connecticut," isn't it? The loyalty only goes one way, apparently and that's the way he named it.

Posted by: KarenJG on December 7, 2009 at 2:27 PM | PERMALINK

is Lieberman just woefully out of touch?

No, he's just a putz. (That's Yiddish for "a penis that thinks it's a person.")

The United States Constitution does not provide for the recall of a Senator. Given this, I suspect it's not possible for a state to do so. Posted by: a different phil on December 7, 2009 at 2:59 PM | PERMALINK

Fired Joey from his chairman post ..... immediately. He no longer supports the people who put him in office - he is selfish and an obstructionist -- FIRE HIM.

The way I heard it was that he named it what he named it in order to get a higher slot on the ballot. I guess for those with short attention span, who don't read all the way down but check off whatever comes first. That the name also happened to represent "the truth, all the truth and nothing but the truth" was, I understand, totally accidental and unanticipated (who could have foretold?). Not surprising since, like so many others, Lieberprick is not as smart as he thinks he is. And he didn't have a whole lot of time to think things through, between the results of the Dem primary and having to register himself and his "party" and still make it to the ballot for the general election.

@John Emerson: You are 100% correct; Connecticut for Liberman Party is now chaired by an outspoken critic of Joe Lieberman's; it was taken over in a coup de grace prior to 2007.

It reduces the punch Marsten had, but certainly it tickles me.

Lieberman is a creepy specimen of a man, crawling around on all fours no doubt at times when no one is looking! -Kevo

You missed the lead!
Exactly how did Joe's party get seized by Joe's critics?

Posted by: Chris S. on December 7, 2009 at 6:12 PM | PERMALINK

Oh, come now! We all know that Holy Joe's a man of character and immense personal integrity. Hasn't he told us often enough?

Every time I see that smarmy, pious fraud rolling his eyes and lifting his hands up to heaven, I almost wish somebody would stomp his sanctimony down his goddamned throat along with most of his teeth.

Posted by: Kevin Carson on December 8, 2009 at 2:11 AM | PERMALINK

So who is he representing?

Lieberman has accepted $2,395,369 in donations from the health sector and $1,033,402 from the insurance industry.

Let us not make this about Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi. This is about the millions of hard working Americans who no longer can afford or never had health insurance.

Traitor Joe is only looking out for himself.. He told the people of his state to "go to hell".

From a Research poll, taken in Connecticut last month:

"Do you favor or oppose creating a government-administered health insurance option that anyone can purchase to compete with private insurance plans?"

Favor 68%
Oppose 21%

So who is he representing?

Retire Traitor Joe and try to save the little respect you still have... When you vote with the Republicans to oppose the biggest bill in the last decade, you will no longer be able to hide in either party.

Republicans don't like traitors any more than the DEMS...
