NOT LETTING REALITY GET IN THE WAY.... Dick Cheney spent eight years making a mockery of the rule of law, so I suppose it's not too terribly surprising that he still doesn't understand the federal criminal process.

Dick Cheney has ratcheted up his criticism of President Obama again, calling the decision to try 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed in New York a "huge mistake."

In an interview with Fox News Channel's Sean Hannity, the former vice president said the trial, which isn't expected to begin for at least a year in Manhattan's federal district court, will allow KSM an ill-advised showcase to spew his anti-American venom.

"He'll be able to go in whenever he's up on the stand and proselytize, if you will, millions of people out there around the world including some of his radical Muslim friends and generate a whole new generation of terrorists," Cheney said.

"I think it will make Khalid Sheikh Mohammed something of a hero in certain circles, especially in the radical regions of Islam around the world. It will put him on the map. He'll be as important or more important than Osama Bin Laden, and we will have made it possible."

Look, I realize that Cheney is almost comically pathetic. He wants to trash the president, and if the facts don't support his baseless smears, Cheney will just make them up.

But these attacks against the White House don't make a lick of sense. There's a nagging detail that even someone of Cheney's limited intellect should be able to understand: there are no cameras for federal trials.

If KSM was able to use his trial as a platform to spew nonsense -- itself a dubious proposition, since federal judges tend to run tight ships -- it wouldn't be seen by "millions of people out there around the world." It would be seen by the few dozen people who are literally, phyiscally in the room.

To believe Cheney, you have to trust that terrorists around the world would be reading courtroom transcripts after the proceedings, and would find them inspirational. And if you believe that, I have a man-sized safe I'd like to sell you.

Indeed, when the Bush/Cheney Justice Department tried Zacarias Moussaoui in a civilian courtroom not far from the Pentagon, he was not exactly a model of decorum. Remember how embarrassing it was for the United States and our system of justice when the world got to see his antics? It wasn't embarrassing at all -- there is no such video, because there are no cameras in federal courts. His rants were easily ignored.

Cheney -- who doesn't quite have the courage to be interviewed by anyone other than Fox News hacks -- proceeded to trash the administration's economic policies (the ones that are cleaning up the catastrophe Cheney left for Obama) and Afghanistan policies (ditto).

I can't quite bring myself to rebut the whole thing -- the man lies more than any adult I've ever seen -- but I will quote this recent piece from James Fallows.

The former vice president, Dick Cheney, has brought dishonor to himself, his office, and his country. I am not aware of a case of a former President or Vice President behaving as despicably as Cheney has done in the ten months since leaving power.... Cheney has acted as if utterly unconcerned with the welfare of his country, its armed forces, or the people now trying to make difficult decisions. He has put narrow score-settling interest far, far above national interest.

Dick Cheney is a walking, talking disgrace.

Look, the DICK knows that he got powned by OBL.

The goals of the 9-11 attacks - to bankrupt our country, ensnare us in a perpetual war in the middle east draining us of our military might, and ruining our image around the world - succeeded fantasticaly.

I guess I'd be cranky too if some cave dweller with a couple of fanatics at his side made me look like a fucking idiot.

God damn Dick Cheney's shit-filled soul to hell.

Yeah, that disruptive, preachy shit worked out real well for me in Chicago way back when.

The fact remains that there was never a terrorist attack during Cheney's watch. Facts matter.

Posted by: Al on December 9, 2009 at 10:57 AM | PERMALINK

Al, don't you have anything better to do with your time than troll liberal/progressive blogs and spew out nonsense?

Is your goal simply to annoy?

Posted by: citizen_pain on December 9, 2009 at 11:03 AM | PERMALINK

Al: if you're going to be a troll, at least try to for a modicum of effectiveness by staying in touch with the facts.

"There was never a terrorist attack during Cheney's watch"? Not counting the three attacks on 9/11, you mean? Or does he get a mulligan there?

Cheney is a profoundly bitter man who realizes that (a) the Bush-Cheney administration has been thoroughly repudiated by the voters, and (b) he will never again hold the levers of power, and he can't STAND that.

Posted by: jvwalt on December 9, 2009 at 11:06 AM | PERMALINK

Can't even address Al his comment is just to stupid to even think about. The fact that the doucheweeds give cheney a podium to spout his nonsense from is disturbing.

Posted by: Gandalf` on December 9, 2009 at 11:06 AM | PERMALINK

I find it fascinating that Cheney thinks a written trial transcript would inspire an entire generation to become terrorists but that killing over 100,000 Iraqis and wounding countless others had absolutely no effect on that same generation.

there are no cameras for federal trials.

-That's why, I am told by several reliable sources in the former administration, the trial will be moved to Madison Square Garden, and broadcast around the world on IMAX. A special podium will be constructed for the 'defendant', and the cameras will be controlled by HIM, not some biased federal judge.

What else should we expect from this washed-up leftover HACK from the NIXON Administration?

I mean, come on. I was 9 years old in 1976, and I knew Cheney was a complete waste of space. His participation in the Reagan Administration was actually an important event in young my life - that's when I learned that Republicans were complete freaking morons. I mean, by THEN, I was a teenager, and I was into all that 2nd Amendment stuff they were spewing, and who was really a big fan of the USSR at that time? But for them to sign on a former NIXON Administration criminal - that was just surreal in its absurdity.

I haven't taken Republicans seriously since then. And I'm just aghast that anyone of my countrymen still does. It's really just pathetic.

Regarding cheney Where is justice being done. cheney reaped much $$$ on the death of Americans and American military and on his continued abuse of power while in office. Where are the indictments???? Where is the justiceto vindicate what he has done to America???

Posted by: mljohnston on December 9, 2009 at 12:41 PM | PERMALINK

I have a question... would any half-way decent defense attorney counsel to get up on the stand - especially in a case like this? Hell no. Should the stupid defendant do this the prosecution has leave to question him and no judge is going just let the defendant get up there an run his mouth.

Clearly Cheney's utter disdain/contempt for the judicial system means he has no idea of what a trial entails and how a court is run.

Why do people take him seriously? Just because he was vice-president doesn't make him worth talking to. Look at Dan Quayle.

Posted by: ET on December 9, 2009 at 12:56 PM | PERMALINK

The other thing to remember is that, for all his bluster, Cheney is profoundly afraid. He is a physical coward, who left DC as often as he could after 9/11 to stay in the "undisclosed location" (which was Jackson Hole) and famously avoided any service in the Vietnam war he supported. He was afraid to conduct government business in the open, or even to adhere to the rule of law (4th branch of government). Worst of all, he let his fears direct some of the worst policy decisions made by any government, such as invading Iraq.

In this case, he is absurdly, childishly afraid that Khalid Sheik Muhammed will be able to stand up in a courtroom and shout out something so goddamned persuasive that some kids in Saudi Arabia will suddenly go "Zoinks! I could be killing Americans now, instead of wanking off to Megan Fox in Transformers II." It's just not going to happen. KSM will spout off daily, and the entire fucking world will go about its business. The only people who will care about KSM's fate already hate America (in part because of exports like Megan Fox). They don't give the tiniest rat's ass if Bush or Obama is in charge.

And logically, if your concern is really and truly about radical islamists, then you go directly after the Saudi leaders for their aggressive, global export of the sterile Wahhabist branch of Islam -- you don't attack a sitting president for doing nothing more than believing in the rule of law.

ok, had to get that out. shorter version: God damn Dick Cheney's shit-filled soul to hell.

Posted by: Rathskeller on December 9, 2009 at 1:07 PM | PERMALINK

Sounds like Dick is scared of what will come out at the trial. Torture is a war crime no matter what Cheney says.

Hey Al - which watch of Dick Cheney's are you talking about? The Micky Mouse watch he obviously wears on his wrist? Or the Omega watch that symbolizes the end to Cheney's relevancy?

What Steve said. I was in the jury pool for the Moussaoui trial, and he would have ranted for hours (even without cameras) if trials worked that way, but they don't. Here's how it actually worked:

- Moussaoui would be led in when procedure required a response from him.
- He would start to rant.
- He would be told by the judge that he had been warned before that if he was only allowed to address the matters he was asked about.
- He would try to continue to rant.
- He would be led out, ranting.

And of course, no one saw it but those of us who were in the room, and we weren't impressed.

(One additional point -- part of the reason GOP leaders get away with this crap is that lots of wingnuts are dumb enough to believe everything works the way it does on TV, whether it's torture on "24" or courtroom dramas.)

Posted by: Redshift on December 9, 2009 at 1:16 PM | PERMALINK

I think this is just Cheney's way of backing into agreeing with me that he should go on trial. Just look at the opportunities:

"I think it will make me something of a hero in certain circles, especially in the radical regions of Crackpot Conservatism around the world. It will put me on the map. I'll be as important or more important than Osama Bin Laden, and we will have made it possible."

Posted by: Boolaboola on December 9, 2009 at 1:20 PM | PERMALINK

Personally, I think the original Al was long ago replaced by someone posting parody troll schtick under that name, meaning there's even less reason than before to respond with anything but a snicker.

The original Al had some profoundly stupid ideas, but would stick around and argue them. The current version always does a hit-and-run on each thread, and the posts are so much above and beyond even the original profoundly stupid ones that I think "Al" is just out to provide an ongoing demonstration of Poe's Law.

Posted by: Redshift on December 9, 2009 at 1:24 PM | PERMALINK

Cheney manages to make me glad that Bush didn't drop dead while in office. Bush's oafish-yet-sinister jackassery would have been replaced by an almost supernatural malevolence.

Redshift -

"(One additional point -- part of the reason GOP leaders get away with this crap is that lots of wingnuts are dumb enough to believe everything works the way it does on TV, whether it's torture on "24" or courtroom dramas.)"

I agree 100%.

I am convinced that Cheney and his entire crew go to bed at night replaying the day in their heads like it's a bad Hollywood action-adventure movie or an episode of 24. They really think that the key to success is delivering a thin but patriotic speech, acting "tough", and shooting guns. They are paralyzed with fear over movie-plot terrorist attacks (they will come in the dead of night, weaken the key supports of the Brooklyn Bridge, and laugh megalomaniacally at the rampant destruction, and while we're distracted with that, they'll sneak a dirty bomb laced with Anthrax through a tunnel under the Rio Grande and plant it under a sports colliseum somewhere and we'll need to torture a guy to tell us where it is before it goes off even though the entire audience knows that since it's SuperBowl Sunday that's obviously where it's at; and while the #1 tough-guy interrogator is busy roughing up the guy that works at the 7-11 around the corner, the REAL plot to steal the Statue of Liberty and use it to engrave Osama bin Ladens visage on the face of the moon is unfolding WHILE WE HAVE OUR GUARD DOWN!

The movies have their own internally semi-consistent logic: a dumb but willing-to-go-the-extra-mile hero will always win out over the bad guys in the end, stopping the bomb right as it's ticking from 0:01 to 0:00; computer interfaces are always swooshy and flashy and require grand arm movements to do the most mundane of tasks, take 30 seconds to download a critical email message and 5 seconds to "interpolate" a 1024x768 clear picture from a 10x10 pixel blob captured off a video camera; the worst thing to do is to go all gushy and thinky over issues and lives rather than just blow them all up and let God sort it out.

But, in real life, things just don't work that way. That's just in your delusional head, Dick.

Also, @Redshift: "Personally, I think the original Al was long ago replaced by someone posting parody troll schtick under that name, meaning there's even less reason than before to respond with anything but a snicker."

I agree there too. I mean, come on folks. "Al" above grabbed the most ridiculed statement of the past month (that no terrorist attacks occurred on Bush's watch, per Perrino) and simply repeated it. I got a chuckle from it, then was aghast that so many of you took it as a serious rebuke to Steve's post. Dudes: it was a funny (in a way) throwback. This isn't the "Al" of a few years back - not by far!

Yes, Steve, he IS a walking, talking disgrace. But if nothing else from the last 8 years prove anything, BUSHCO always thought we (the voters) were dumber than rocks and they could say ANYTHING. It is up to every American to stand up and say 'FU you lying suck. We DO get it.'

Dick Cheney is a walking, talking disgrace.

he is also an a**hole douchebag but most importantly he is a WAR CRIMINAL and should be indicted, tried, convicted and either imprisoned or executed as such. like the americans did to the germans at nuremberg in wwii.

plus he is a draft dodging pos coward.

"'He'll be able to go in whenever he's up on the stand and proselytize, if you will, millions of people out there around the world including some of his radical Muslim friends and generate a whole new generation of terrorists,' Cheney said."

Yeah, look at how many people became Nazis after the Nuremberg Trials.

And don't forget all those people who joined Manson's Family after Charlie went on trial.

What a douchebag.

"He wants to trash the president, and if the facts don't support his basless smears, Cheney will just make them up."

Because of Cheney and his cohorts in the Bushie administration, it is now routine for Republicans to simply make things up and declare them truths to the American people. Quite ingenious, really. Lie enough, and some of the lies will slip through. And you really can fool some of the people all of the time (see: Fox News viewers).

Cheney is and has always been a disgrace. He is the walking/talking definition of a Sociopath: one who is unconcerned about the adverse consequences for others of his actions. He has never cared for this country, George W. Bush has never cared for this country, and anyone they appointed to any position in government should be considered suspect as well. These are not good people - they are traitors - and they should be treated as such.

Posted by: Limbaughs Diabetes on December 9, 2009 at 3:29 PM | PERMALINK

Oh, and I forgot: A1: The *fact* is that there was ONLY a terrorist attack on Cheneys watch. It happened on 9/11/2001 - did you hear about it? Bush was President - remember the cute little book about the goat he was reading? - and Cheney was Vice President. When Cheney heard the news he disappeared for months into his "bunker" to hide like the coward he is. So I agree with you - facts *DO* matter. And the fact is - you are an idiot who idolizes a coward. Face facts.

Posted by: Limbaughs Diabetes on December 9, 2009 at 3:34 PM | PERMALINK

It is very unlikely that KSM will be put on the stand by his defense attorney. So that platform to run off at the mouth and have it be on record will probably not be offered.

He will be physically restrained at all times, will enter the court room only moments before the judge, and be removed immediately after the Judge leaves the bench.

If he disrupts the trial he will be put in a separate room under guard with a TV monitor, as has happened to other unrully defendants.

Remember when Bush "chose" Cheney to be on the ticket nine, long years ago? In actuality, it was Cheney whose chose Cheney. Poppy Bush charged his former Secretary of Defense with the mission of finding a suitable running mate for his half-witted kid. After a vigorous and detailed "search", Dick came back with the stats: As it turned out, he was the best person qualified to run with Junior as V.P. candidate. Almost three years ago I imagined the conversation that must have taken place:

The Dickster: GEORGE! I have found your ideal running mate!

Dubya: Great! Who is it, Dick?

The Dickster: You're not gonna believe it - IT'S ME!!!

Dubya: Whoa! What're the odds!

I have always believed that it was a perfect illustration of the utter stupidity of Bush and the people around him that they swallowed all of this without batting an eye. And do you remember the term that all of the talking heads and pundits were using to describe Cheney when Bush made this fateful decision? He had "gravitas", they chimed. Gravitas. The story keeps getting funnier with every passing moment of historical hindsight. Gravitas indeed.
