THURSDAY'S MINI-REPORT.... Today's edition of quick hits:

* Targeting al Qaeda: "A 'high-ranking' al-Qaida figure was killed Thursday in an attack by a drone aircraft in northwest Pakistan, U.S. officials told NBC News. The officials did not identify who was killed, except to say that it was not al-Qaida's supreme leader, Osama bin Laden. If the report is confirmed, it would be the first time coalition forces had killed a top al-Qaida figure in almost a year."

* Pakistan: "Five young Muslim American men arrested here Wednesday were on their way to the heart of the Taliban sanctuary in Pakistan's tribal areas with the intention of training to fight against American troops in Afghanistan, Pakistani police authorities said Thursday."

* A temporary break: "The Senate voted 56 to 43 on Thursday afternoon to temporarily put aside the major health care legislation and take up a crucial package of spending measures needed to finance many government operations.... A final vote on the spending package is expected on Sunday, and the Senate would then return to the health care bill, aides said."

* Good move: "Moving to quell the uproar over the return of big paydays on Wall Street, Goldman Sachs announced on Thursday that its top executives would forgo cash bonuses this year and that it would give shareholders a say in determining compensation."

* Wait, now conservative Republicans don't think the health care reform bill is long enough? It's so difficult to keep up with their talking points.

* A major setback for marriage equality in New Jersey.

* Rick Warren finally feels compelled to speak out against anti-gay legislation in Uganda.

* On Human Rights Day, there's renewed interest in a "New Domestic Human Rights Agenda."

* I'm sorry to see E&P fold after all of 125 years.

* I'm glad to see PolitiFact get a syndication deal.

* The oil industry's capacity for dishonesty is almost limitless.

* College in three years?

* Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) wants to prohibit excessively loud TV commercials. I heartily endorse his effort.

* Stephanopoulos to "GMA," Cuomo to "20/20."

* And finally, Glenn Beck has endorsed "abolishing" Medicare. One wonders how many congressional Republicans will go on record supporting this position. Perhaps some effort should be made to ask them.

Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

To paraphrase an old joke, how can you tell when a Goldman employee is lying? The compensation change mentioned above only applies to the top 30 guys at Goldman. And they're already so stinking rich it wouldn't matter if they ever got paid again. They'll continue to pay the rest of their staff extremely well. And that's the understatement of the year...

How about college in 2 years? How about 1?

'The Senate voted 56 to 43' to put aside Health Care...
BUT they need 60 votes to PASS it? Oh I know, I'm beating a dead horse......

my first job out of college was working for a small newspaper chain in suburban chicago. E&P was circulated every week, but only after management cut out the pages of help wanted ads.

And finally, Glenn Beck has endorsed "abolishing" Medicare.

Wait, I thought Republicans were against killing grandma?

Commercials that are so loud are not a frivilous issue.. I am so thankful for the mute button and for the DVR..

Still, this isn't always the option when I'm in another room or whatever..I do think they're so intrusive..these commercials are something like 3-5 times louder than the show itself...it's torture!

The irony is the loudness in general just turns me off so much that I'm sure it makes me disinclined to buy the product being advertised.

You know, if we liberals were like the GOP, we'd be blasting out the news that Glenn Beck wants to shoot and rape your grandmother before she gets to his corporate death-panels.

Re the al Qaeda killed, as long as it wasn't the #3 in command... I think the Bushies claimed about 26 of the #3's.

Speaking of Af/Pak, I found this really annoying-

“Things are going pretty well right now because the Obama administration realized that the American people want McCrystal to make these decisions,”
-Sen James Inhofe

Delusional. Wildly disrespectful of the President to boot. Obama was voted into office primarily because a majority wanted him making the decisions. As for "...Things are going pretty well...", tell that to the men and women who are still dying there. Jackass.

Very nice article in Rolling Stone by Matt Taibbi on why further trust in Obama is probably misplaced. Don't link if you haven't taken your blood pressure meds.

Great topic and there is definitely a good amount of perspectives here. This bill reminds me of the cash for clunkers bill. It was widely discouraged by most but many of those who opposed the bill were taking advantage of it. If you dont believe me, take a look at how much the used car dealerships in los angeles benefited the dealers and buyers. Once this goes through, it'll be the last we hear about it.

Someone should tally up how much America spends on foreign countries yearly and lifelong totals. Obama thinks we should become poor to pour everything into other countries who are and always have wasted our money and stay pretty much as backward as they were decades ago. They don't need more money than the fortune they are already getting. They need reform in their governments. Americans need to know what we spend before they give us a sob story and break the bank. They could all be eating steak on what we send.

I've been trying to keep a level view of the antics in the Senate, but really, I give up on these clowns. The democrats have caved in every significant way on the health insurance bill. At this point, the only reasonable thing for the house to do is kill the bill. The republicans and Ben Nelson, Joe Lieberman, and company have won. Passing what's left would be a disaster. Fuck the blue dogs, and fuck Rahm Emmanuel and his let's get a dog and pony show running for the dumb voters tactic.

What a surprise, Matt Taibbi is outraged and neo-gonzo about something. Maybe he and Jonathan Turley can call up Jane Hamsher and Glenn Greewald so they can drown their indignation in the wild freaky-deeky they so badly need.

zero out the military aid and tell me how much we spend. even with it, it's not such a significant chunk of the budget that it makes or breaks us.

Completely unrelated: Why are there now ads for conservative t-shirts displayed prominently on this page? It's the biggest, most prominently placed flashy ad on the page. That sucks. Is it necessary?

Great review.I also know Obama said al Qaeda and its extremist allies threaten the US from different corners of the globe--not only from Pakistan, but also from East Africa and Southeast Asia; from Europe and the Gulf. "That's why we're applying focused and relentless pressure on Al Qaeda--by sharing more intelligence, strengthening the capacity of our partners, disrupting terrorist financing, cutting off supply chains, and inflicting major losses on al Qaeda's leadership"...

This is the country we live in=
Olberman of MSNBC, helped by democrats have been working to finance free health care clinics in various parts of the country - ignored by just about everyone in the rest of the media.
At the same time the insurance industry is spending hundreds of millions of dollars, aided by the republicans who are being well paid by them, to stop Americans from getting healthcare.
I would say the country is in need of a revolution where we throw out the repubs and democrats who work for the corporations, it won't be easy because the corps will spend big money to keep repubs in power, but it needs to be done.

In the Hartford Courant yesterday there was a full-page ad signed by hundreds of religious leaders in CT urging Lieberman to examine his conscience on healthcare. The sense is that Joe's schtick is starting to wear a bit thin in his home state.

At least Beck is being honest. If you don't like government run health care, you can't support Medicare. Too many Republicans think they can have it both ways.

And wasn't the prescription drug benefit their idea too?
